The Surfline surf forecasting service has in fifteen years become the primary interface through which the majority of California surfers decide when to surf, which break to surf, and what to expect from the session they are planning. The power of the forecast has changed the specific relationship between the surfer and their own ocean reading in ways that the surf community is beginning to examine.

The Ocean Reading Question

The ocean reading question: the skill of reading the ocean -- assessing swell period and direction, reading the sandbar, understanding how the tide will affect the break across the session -- is the skill that the Surfline forecast has partially replaced for the surfers who use the forecast instead of developing the reading ability themselves.
