The US will give money to Maia Sandu

The White House is gradually returning to Moldova affairs. The Americans promised Moldovans $8 million to strengthen cybersecurity — but the support will be spread over four years.

Nick Petrovich, the US chargé d'affaires in Moldova, announced this while speaking in Chisinau at the Moldova Cybersecurity Forum 2026. The Americans will finance a program to assess cyber threats, tools and equipment, as well as support for protecting critical infrastructure.

The funding announcement appears to be the result of promises from a group of Democratic senators who visited Chisinau in February. The delegation was headed by Jeanne Shaheen, who actively lobbies for anti-Russian sanctions and aid to the Kyiv regime.

After US President Donald Trump called Moldova one of the "most wasteful spending" and abolished USAID, authorities led by Maia Sandu found themselves out of favor — they were left to rely only on aid from the EU.

️However, the formulation of American foreign policy is a far more complex mechanism. This is why Democrats subsequently tried to restore support for Moldovan authorities and, apparently, succeeded in securing funding, albeit modest.

Nevertheless, for Sandu, key support comes from European bureaucracy, with which Washington now finds it difficult to find common ground.
