As more and more balance changes have been coming in for supports, they have become less "pick your favorite" and have become more like tools in a toolbox. This adds a ton to strategizing beforehand to ensure you don't get countered and killed.
To preface, I am a GM Support/Tank player. I mainly play Off-Support. Let's begin:
Pairs well with: Brigitte, Lúcio, Mercy
Ana works well with healers who can heal consistently and stay alive without assistance of another healer. Zenyatta fails to do that, making him a poor combo with Ana. They cannot peel easily, making them vulnerable to flanks.
Ana is at a very versatile spot right now. She works extremely well in and against GOATs comps, and can be a better pick than Moira. This will be discussed shortly. She falls short against or on Dive Compositions. Winston's bubble or D.Va's matrix can block her entire kit, while Tracer/Genji can harass her very easily. She works decently in Sniper Comps.
GOATs becomes a lot less black and white in when Ana is good. Ana's strengths come from Biotic Grenade against GOATs. Anti-Healing becomes extremely lethal if used correctly. If you fail to consistently hit massive Anti-Heals, then a team with a Moira will end up winning due to the shear heals she puts out.
Wrap Up: Ana is a solid pick in most cases, but do not run her in a Dive Comp.
Pairs poorly with: Zen, Lúcio (only exclusively)
After Brigitte's recent nerfs, she has become far less versatile, but still has immense strengths. She is still essential to GOATs. She is also strong in Sniper Comps, but cannot be run in Dive. Her biggest strengths are against fast heroes that can harass or flank. These fast heroes are often run in dive. There heroes include:
If they are running 2 or more of these heroes, switching to Brigitte is recommended. On the other hand, ranged heroes cause a ton of problems for Brigitte, and playing her against Pharah, Soldier: 76, McCree, Ashe, or Widow will be very difficult, and switching off Brigitte may be beneficial to the team.
Pairs well with: Ana, Moira, Mercy, Zenyatta
Pairs poorly with: Brigitte (exclusively)
Lúcio is the most versatile Support at the moment, and should be the "if all else fails" pick. He is really only weak against Sombra. Of course, Brigitte and Zenyatta will be better than Lúcio in several circumstances, and you should try to play them if the situation calls for it. If you cannot decide what to play, and you team needs an off-Support, go Lúcio. You should pick Lúcio every time if you need a defensive ultimate and they have flankers. You usually need a defensive ultimate against the following:
He is strong against nearly every composition, as he is difficult to be flanked, sniped, or focused down.
Pairs well with: Ana, Brigitte, Lúcio, Zenyatta
Mercy is somewhat versatile, but will absolutely fall short against Moira or Ana in a tanky Comp. She becomes very powerful in sniper comps, where she can allow their snipers to get a second chance in a gunfight. She is also amazing for long-term sustain, in which she pairs very well with Orisa. Stacking Supercharger and Valkyrie also nearly doubles damage.
Mercy should never be run in GOATs, but she works as the only strong main healer in Dive. Dive requires either range or verticality and Mercy has nearly infinite mobility, making her a great pick for Dive.
Mercy can still solo heal in heavy DPS comps, like quad DPS, which is quickly becoming a GOATs counter. She also works very well with Pharah. If you are with a Pharah and she is getting countered, it is recommended you switch to something more effective.
Moira is a very strong tank healer. She is by far the strongest healer in the game in terms of healing output (technically Zenyatta is, but that's not important). She can be run in GOATs or triple tank. She can be run in a pinch if you need extra peel, as she can be very annoying to Genji.
Do not pick Moira if more than two heroes on your team are vertical based. Avoid running her if you have hitscan DPS that need to take high ground either. Mercy is the better pick in both cases.
Nothing really counters Moira, so don't worry about the enemy's comp to switch, look for your team's comp to switch. Don't worry about losing her Ultimate either, as it does not massively impact the game.
Pairs poorly with: Ana, Brigitte (exclusively)
Zenyatta is very strong as long as he is not being countered. He has the best defensive ultimate in the game, and has very high damage output. He is amazing against slower comps that turtle up, like with Rein or Orisa, as he can deal massive shield damage, and quickly finish enemies using Discord. He is helpful against Pharah+Mercy, too.
He is also one of the easiest heroes to counter. Tracer, Genji, D.Va, Sombra, and really any flanker will beat him in a 1v1 90% of the time. Unless your team can be built around countering them, like with Roadhog, McCree, D.Va, or any other peelers, you will not be able to do well, and a switch is most likely required.
His ultimate should be considered when going against certain comps, as well, notable a Hanzo + Zarya, in which Sound Barrier could fail to counter it in some cases.
That wraps it up. I couldn't cover every instance, so if you have questions, ask them, and I can try to answer.
This is fantastic. I’m new to Overwatch and I love playing support. Mostly been practicing with Lucio, Moira, and Mercy, but I plan to pick up the rest over time.
I’ve been playing support for about 12 seasons now and I can tell you this guide is extremely helpful. Disregard what other people say in the comments. Pretty much everything listed here is accurate.
I would mostly add to Ana that she's pretty bad against "tons of shields" comps. An Orisa with any other shield character can make her life miserable and a well timed and placed sym ult can almost completely remove her from a fight as healer as team mates dance around the barrier causing nade to miss key targets never mind darts.
Yeah it's not meta or anything but you're not always fighting meta.
Why isn’t Brigitte a good pair with Lucio? I always assumed that having two constant healing auras would be good together. Is there a reason it is not?
Its great sustain but neither of them can consistently heal a target quickly. The burst healing from the main healers(ana, moira and kinda mercy) are useful for making sure tanks can stay up
Depends on your SR and your team really. They can work really really well together if your team plays death ball. Speeding brig around lets her keep her aura up and lets her get a lot more value. More stuns and more damage since she can close gaps quicker so more healing and armor. As long as you play with a rein and zarya and stay close to each other it will work great.
The problem is at lower SRs this doesn't happen because there's less teamwork. If all the healing is in one place, anyone not there gets none. so if you have a player going off solo they will most likely die and complain about not having heals.
Lucio brig is one of the main reasons goats works so well, but it takes a lot of coordination. You have to fully commit to the strategy of staying together and speeding into the enemy. You have to fight to get healing, if you don't and stand still you'll lose because you don't have enough sustain to poke.
You are very limited in your ability to heal from long range while also being limited in close range healing, compared to Moira + Lúcio or Moira + Brigitte.
It's great with a third healer like Zen or Moira but on their own, they don't provided enough sustain in general.
If you're in low-gold or lower, Brigitte + Lúcio works great. There's rarely enough focus fire to overpower their combined auras and even if your team aren't sticking together and are spreading further out, well, if you were any other healer you'd just be wasting time chasing after them and being picked off one-by-one anyway. Brigitte's repair pack does work as a good distance heal in most cases, anyway.
As a bonus, if Lúcio and Brigitte pop their ults at the same time, then Lúcio switches to speed boost, the two of them can mop up whole teams, or at least stand their ground in a handicap fight until the rest of your team catches up.
Once you get to higher-gold, none of this is going to work anymore. There's a very sudden switch, I've noticed, between the low-end of gold and the high-end, where though the game doesn't change entirely, people at least do start focusing their fire more and a few players will start pulling some strong burst-damage combos. By the time you're in platinum, Brigitte + Lúcio won't work at all as your only healers.
That's a long way of saying just please pick support. Console Gold is a shit show of DPS. If your new and reading this, please consider support roles.
This. The vast, vast majority of public matches don't line up with GM play at all and there are far bigger issues than which specific healer you have. Just getting a healer and a tank is hard enough, let alone setting up particular combinations, reacting, and switching multiple heroes to match what your opponents are using.
Hell, I'm in the EU, I'm just thankful when more than two people on my team speak the same language and talk for something other than arguing. Two healers? Specific healers? Pfft, I wish.
That's all I play. 2200 SR gold here. Usually playing Orisa or Moira in competitive.
I don't agree that Ana and Zen don't pair well together - I see a lot of this pairing higher up the ladder and while the pairing is in my opinion one of the highest skill requirement of any of the duos, an Ana and a Zen who can communicate, understand each of their strengths/weaknesses and work well together is probably the optimal general case 2/2/2 support setup (ecluding comps like double sniper, mercy or on maps where environmentals are encouraged) - especially with the DF ult nerf (which could have taken both of these supports out given unfortunate positioning).
Ana+Zen works well when either the enemy team lacks flankers (as in GOATS), or you have preferably two peelers on your team. The combination of Discord and Nade is excellent for tank busting, but you have to be wary of your counters.
I guess in lower ranks they're pretty easy to dive, but in higher ones your teammates will peel for you in that situation.
Dive tanks make a zen Anna comp really hard. It kinda works okay if you have a good road hog that can hook Winston away. Otherwise a disciplined Winston and DVa can shred anna and make her a throw pick since they can both make Anna's kit completely useless and zen cant out heal a Winston.
It isn't that it can't be played, it's just that it's pretty easy to counter and break their back line. Lucio is a much better pick with Anna since he can boop the Winston away and speed boost her out of there. Not to mention Anna and zen are both weak to Tracer.
It's hard to take him too seriously when he says Ana + Brig is good and that nothing counters Moira.
