Super Bowl LIV, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs of the AFC and the San Francisco 49ers out of the NFC, is rapidly approaching its 6:30 p.m. ET kickoff time on Sunday, February 2. This matchup, taking place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, between two of the league’s most historic franchises has plenty of intriguing storylines weaved into it and should be an exciting one to not only watch, but also bet on.
After plenty of successful regular seasons followed by disappointing postseason runs over the last half-century, the Chiefs were finally able to break through and return to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. They brought home their first Lamar Hunt Trophy—given out to the AFC Champions since 1985 and named after the team’s former owner—and now seek to add another Vince Lombardi Trophy to the collection. Kansas City head coach Andy Reid will get a second chance to add a championship to his Hall of Fame caliber resume after coming up just short in his last trip to the big game with the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2005. San Francisco is in position to stop the Chiefs thanks to a remarkable change in fortunes this year. The Niners turned things around following a four year run in which the franchise won six or less games in each of those seasons, becoming the first organization to ever reach a Super Bowl in year that followed such a dismal stretch. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is also getting an opportunity to earn his first Super Bowl ring after the Atlanta Falcons, the team that Shanahan was offensive coordinator for at the time, squandered their chance at one by blowing a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl three years ago.
Here’s a full look at how everything you need to know to watch Super Bowl LIV:
Location: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida
Moneyline: Chiefs -125 (Risk $1.25 to win $1), 49ers +105 (Risk $1 to win $1.05)
The 2020 Super Bowl is also shaping up to be one of the more evenly matched title tilts in history, with oddsmakers installing the Chiefs as just one-point favorites in the contest. If that line holds, it will become just the third championship showdown with a spread of one point or less. Interestingly enough, Super Bowls with short point spreads (six or less points), have never once had an underdog that outright lost but covered the spread. There have been 26 previous occasions in which the spread on a Super Bowl has been six or less, with the underdog winning 13 of those games straight-up and the favorite notching SU and ATS wins in the other 13. With the margins in this contest expected to be razor thin, it’s possible that this could be the first Super Bowl in more than a decade—the Pittsburgh Steelers were the last team to raise a banner but fail to cover when they topped the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23, as 6.5-point chalk in Super Bowl 43—where the favorite wins but doesn’t cover the spread.
The Chiefs are currently drawing slightly more bets made and money wagered against the spread on Super Bowl LIV. As of Thursday morning, Kansas City is responsible for 60% of the tickets and 56% of the point spread handle. The line has stayed relatively stable at most shops since some early volatility, although those looking to back the 49ers can shop around can still find them getting 1.5 points at certain books. That still has plenty of time to change, however, especially with weather forecasts still to be finalized and the state of the field to be determined.
Super Bowl weather conditions are expected to be clear and sunny with temperatures around 64 degrees at the time of kickoff, but rains are in the forecast in the days leading up to Super Bowl 2020. Soggy field conditions could benefit a 49ers team that relied heavily on its running game to navigate through the NFC portion of the NFL Playoff bracket. Sharps are certainly keeping an eye on these factors and waiting to make a play as soon as there is more clarity, but the public will also be impacting where the spread settles on Sunday night. Plenty of people have yet to make their picks for the Super Bowl and a deluge of cash—especially on the day of the game—will almost surely cause some last-minute line movement.
Ben Fawkes highlighted the biggest bets that have been placed on Super Bowl 54 so far:
The Super Bowl 2020 total is now hovering around 54.5 points, which is a relatively large uptick from the opening over/under of 51.5. The public is overwhelmingly backing the over, with 77% of all tickets and 84% of money wagered on that side of the total. Shops have been steadily adjusting the line upwards due to this and the total is now coming closer to a record-high for a Super Bowl, a 57-point mark shared by Super Bowls LI and XLIV. Super Bowl LIV kicks off Sunday night in Miami. While it's not at all clear who'll win the game, one thing no one should be surprised about is if the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs combine to deliver an absolute classic to hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide. Led by rookie phenom Nick Bosa and veterans like Arik Armstead , the 49ers pass rush is the relentless mongoose, backed up by a snake charmer in a resurgent Richard Sherman . However, they'll be tasked with trying to slow down Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes , the 2018 NFL MVP, who leads a high-powered offense that can strike with the quickness of a fer-de-lance, and with equally as much venom.
Even the oddsmakers in Vegas are having a hard time sorting out who'll emerge victorious in Miami Gardens, but something's got to give when these two teams clash . Following the conclusion of both conference championship games, the odds for Super Bowl LIV opened nearly as close to a pick 'em as you can get without actually labeling it one, with the Chiefs carrying a razor's edge over the 49ers, per Westgate Superbook via SportsLine .
