With Sunny Side Up, writer-director Mike Melo does for social anxiety and critical self-analysis what Edgar Allan Poe did for criminal paranoia in The Tell-Tale Heart. He takes us on a journey through nearly every neurotic moment of self doubt and overthinking in the life of his protagonist, Gregory, a lonely and cheer-free funeral home worker, played with dour urgency by Hunter Davis. Much of poor Gregory's existence, it would seem, is tied up in an unhealthy daily diet of internal grumblings with himself over small decisions he deems as far more catastrophic than they presumably are such as whether or not to inform a neighbor that they dropped something on the sidewalk. While on a stress-related sabbatical from work, Gregory finds himself in a series of near-conversations with his neighbor, Emma, a sardonic girl next door type, who he finds himself too nervous to interact with, despite some considerable persistence on her end. In the role of Emma, Samantha Creed finds a good balance as a respectable counterpart to Davis' woefully hopeless lead. She appears in a lot of ways to be as equally lonely as Gregory but significantly less emotionally closed off. In dealing with their feelings, I liked that Melo avoided many of the obvious trappings of the socially awkward "meet-cute" where typically, the trope involves a hyper attractive younger woman doing lots of sexually aggressive bombarding and attacking of the loner, often with particular attempt to use his social shortcomings as a form of humiliation for laughs. Instead of playing her up as some one-note solution to all of Gregory's inner issues, she is allowed to have a lot of the same uncertainties as he is but through Creed's performance, she is also given a healthy dose of comedic energy. Her scenes with Gregory are arguably the most entertaining part of the movie. Independent, smaller budget films have a real tendency to be a tough sale amongst those more accustomed to mainstream studio films. Given the option, a lot of viewers tend to prefer content that is simplistic, shallow, and familiar over unique and different films that may require a little more investment to get behind. In the case of "Sunny Side Up", the investment felt worthwhile. At certain points, the protagonist's plight felt frustrating relatable, and I would venture to say that even those who don't suffer from the same affliction, will most likely find something engaging about the proceedings, and with a running time that is just shy of ninety minutes, it never quite overstays its welcome. Worth checking out. The film is currently available streaming through Amazon or on an affordably-priced Blu-Ray disc. The disc contains the feature film with no added special features.

Taking the audience on an emotional journey, Sunny Side Up narrates the story of Gregory, a lonely funeral home worker who suffers from extreme social anxiety and self-doubt. Every day, a voice inside Gregory tells him that he is not good enough and never will be worthy to live the life he wants. For most of his life, he agonizes with making small decisions that wreak havoc on his mental health and make him miserable. When Gregory’s boss gives him a one-month sabbatical to deal with his emotions, he decides to use this time locked inside his apartment to figure out his feelings. During his self-quarantine, Gregory meets his new neighbor Emma, an equally lonely individual who is interested in getting to know him. Unfortunately, his awkwardness results in him having near-conversations with Emma, as he feels too nervous to actually talk to her. However, slowly, he starts to come out of his shell and have real conversations with her. During one of their talks, Emma asks him if he ever wonders that everything he feels is just inside his head. One of the most powerful scenes in the film is when Gregory is asked if he ever thinks about how he will be remembered, something that every one of us has asked ourselves at one point in our lives. Director Mike Melo impressively creates a balance between Greg’s and Emma’s personalities. While Gregory is an emotionally closed-off loner, Emma doesn’t let the same insecurities dictate her life, giving her character a dose of optimistic energy. The conversations between the characters enable Gregory to realize that he is not alone and that it is okay to sometimes feel self-doubt as long as you know that you are more than what your inner voice tells you. Sunny Side Up is all about helping people realize that they are not alone. It is about navigating your way through life and fighting for the life you want without letting your perceived issues stop you from living the life of your dreams.

So many great layers to this movie. SUNNY SIDE UP shows us how an individual can feel alone and out of place in the world, and what happens when that inner voice crowds out all of the good and possibilities that are possible. In Gregory we get an individual not just dealing with social anxiety but also a feeling of worthlessness. In one of the surprising conversations in the movie he is asked 'How do you think you will be remembered?' It's a great question, and one that Gregory has to ponder. But Gregory is not alone. We also see how through Emma there are others who can share our feelings of isolation. Our hurt can be their hurt. Will we find a way to work together and enjoy life or will we allow our own perceived issues to stop us from living? Those are just some of what we get in SUNNY SIDE UP. Love the encouragement to try something different, experience something new. Who knows? We might just discover there are more things that unite us than separate us.

A feel-good movie I could watch again and again. Sunny Side Up is very insightful. As someone who suffers from anxiety, the depiction of the characters' emotions is easy to relate to. This movie reinforces that there is a kindness in humanity that we sometimes forget about. It shines a light on what living with social anxiety is like and was a real eye-opener. The character development was amazing and watching the characters work through their highs and lows was captivating, to say the least.

If you like unique stories and character driven movies, you'll like and appreciate this film. It's creative and takes you into a world not often explored in mainstream Hollywood. It's especially interesting to watch given what the world has been going through with Covid and people quarantining and being separate from one another for long periods of time. Pretty impressive film. Worth the watch.

I've had several close friends that have dealt with crippling social anxiety, depression, and anxiety in and of itself. I've been a nurse for 17 plus years and see patients on a daily basis that deal with these same issues. After watching this film, I now have a much better idea of what goes in in their daily life. The struggles and issues that come up and affect them continuously. The perspective has certainly changed. Bravo 👏 👏 👏

Former WWE Diva and now Hall of Famer, Sunny, has officially inked a deal with Vivid Entertainment. While she’s only a few years removed from her 2011 induction by the McMahons, she joins fellow manager and wrestler Chyna as the second Diva ever to shoot a hardcore film.
Originally, it was reported that she was offered $100,000 to shoot a scene, but both sides apparently agreed to a much larger deal. Now she is starring in the Vivid presentation, Sunny Side Up: In Through The Backoor , which we’re sure Vince and Stephanie McMahon will soon give her Chris Benoit treatment heading forward with the film becoming official.
