We all know those summer days that are too hot and all you want is to jump through a sprinkler. With these water games for kids, your family will get that cool down you all need while having a blast ! Scroll on to find our favorite water games that will keep your family in cool-down mode. A note about water balloons: they are fun as can be, but please be sure to clean up your little pieces: they can be choking hazards for little birds. Have a few prizes as an incentive to get kids in on a quick clean-up.
1. Water Balloon Basketball This easy water game for kids is a slam dunk for any age, because all kiddos need to do is point and shoot a squishy water balloon into a larger-than-regulation-sized hoop. To get the game started, have them hold a hula-hoop tummy level, the way you carry a laundry basket. Then line up kids for a turn to score two points. After each tiny baller sinks a splat-worthy shot, trade out the positions so everyone gets a turn. They shoot, they score on this one!
2. Water Balloon Towel Toss Bust out beach towels for this easy-to-run toss game that’s a little like tennis, but without the net or the racquets. Kiddos play in teams of four, where each pair holds a beach towel gently between them, with a little bit of slack. The goal? To toss the balloon back and forth between two blankets without letting it drop… as many times as you can. The team with the most consecutive bounces (we’re betting they’ll be the driest of the bunch too!) wins!
3. Water Balloon Pop! The kids will clock plenty of giggle mileage when they play this fast-paced game. Break your group into two teams, each with a heaping bucket of fully-loaded water balloons. When you say go, one member from each team grabs a balloon, races down the yard and tries to pop it with his or her body (think stomping, sitting, or even laying on it!). Guarantee a dousing by having the kids break balloons on a chair, or, let the ground take the brunt of the splash. Once the balloon is popped, it’s back to the start to tag the next kiddo. On your mark, get set, go!
4. Water Balloon Piñata String up an array of colorful water balloons in the yard (over a tree, from the swing set) to serve as the piñata. Line up the Littles, and let each one take a swing in turn, with a plastic bat, or even a wrapping paper tube, in the hopes of hitting the delicate target, and letting loose the wild waterfall. Blindfolded or not, this is one guaranteed way to get wet!
5. Sponge Ball Relay Get the energy out of your kiddos with a simple sponge ball relay race. Divide your group into two teams, then set up two empty buckets on one end of the yard, one for each team. Place another two buckets, full of water and sopping wet sponge balls, on the opposite end. When the whistle blows, one player from each team grabs a soaked sponge, runs it lickety-split to the empty bucket and wrings out as much water as he or she can before running back to tag the next player. It’s easy to play this one with a time limit—the team with the fullest bucket wins! Or, until one team’s bucket spills over in victory.
6. Keep Your Eye on the Balloon For this water game for kids, think carnival shooting range—floating balloons being used as target practice. For the set up you’ll need lots of helium balloons, and weights that are strong enough to hold the balloons in place when they take direct hits. Spread the targets out on the playing field. Three rows—each a different height and different distance from the shooting line—works well. Then, have kidlets step right up and take their best shot; each time they get a hit, they get a prize. Bullseye!
7. Squirt Gun Soccer You should probably start stockpiling super soakers for this one. Little athletes will get a kic…er… have a blast with this no-kick version of soccer that trades feet for squirt guns, and traditional soccer balls for a lighter-than-air beach ball. To start this wannabe match, break the group into two teams, and arm each player with a fully loaded squirt gun. They’ll use the stream to move the ball around the field as they try to score (or block) a goal. Set up sports cones at either end of the field so they know where to aim, and then it’s time to play. Go team!
8. DIY Soakers Just say no to broken water balloon bits littering the yard; use sponge balls instead! Just as throwable, just as drenchable, this soft alternative won’t leave behind a colorful mess for you to pick up. Aimee at It’s Overflowing has the DIY know-how you need in order to make your own colorful soakers.
9. Cup Races Think NCAA tourney when you whip out cup races at the party. All the tiny kddos will get a chance to work their way through the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight for a shot at the big time—the Final Four—as they compete head-to-head, racing plastic cups down a string, using squirt guns. Allison spells out the set up and racing deets at her blog, All for the Boys so you can run the races like a pro.
10. Sponge Ball Toss Got buckets? Then you’ve got all you need for some sponge ball toss. Line the kidlets up facing each other a couple feet apart, in two straight lines, Madeline style. One holds a bucket, the other a sopping wet sponge ball. The object? To toss the sponge ball into the bucket. The catch? With each successful toss, the bucket holder takes a step back. It’s a toss till you miss kind of game, then you know it’s time to switch places. The prize? Soaking in the fun of it all.

Summer is the perfect time to venture outside and play some outdoor games!
Whether you’re planning a summer birthday party, a garden party or just looking for ways to have fun in the sun, take a look at our round-up of our favourite summer party games for inspiration. We’re here to keep the kids (and grown-ups) entertained all summer long.
Use different coloured spray paints to paint a DIY twister mat on an old bedsheet, or use different coloured chalk on the patio. Then let the game begin!
Put a summery twist on ten-pin bowling by using pineapples instead of pins. Line them up and see if you can knock them all down!
A treasure hunt makes a fun outdoor party game and you could re-use our free printable outdoor treasure hunt clues to set up a fun summer scavenger hunt.
If you’ve got some empty plastic bottles lying around, you can turn them into a fun summer party game. Fill each one with water to weigh it down and then cut some rings out of an old cardboard box. Then see who can toss as many rings onto the bottles, and make it harder by standing further away.
Make your water bombs re-usable by using sponges instead of balloons. Give each team a bucket of water and a couple of sponges, then let the water fight begin! Water games for the garden are a great way to keep kids of all ages entertained.
How about setting up an obstacle course in your garden? It’s super easy to do and loads of fun – here are a couple of easy ideas for obstacles!
You might remember this old classic from school sports days. Give each player an old potato sack and see who can reach the finish line in the fastest time! If you haven’t been eating your way through sacks of potatoes, then our jumping sacks are the next best thing.
This summer game is perfect for hot days. Replace a traditional piñata with a water balloon and hang it on a tree. Give each player a turn to bash the water piñata and whoever pops it gets soaked!
Giant games for the garden always go down well, our botanical noughts and crosses are great for the garden and weddings alike. Alternatively, you can create the board with a couple of bamboo sticks and use rocks with noughts and crosses drawn on top with chalk.
Put a twist on classic egg and spoon races with this fun outdoor party game. Replace the eggs with small water balloons and if you drop them, you’ll get soaked!
Make a target by cutting a hole in the middle of an old cardboard box. Then see who can toss a bean bag through the hole – the further away you are, the harder it will be!
This (strictly) outdoor game is great fun on a hot day. Fill balloons with water and try to soak your opponents! Water balloon pump toys will make life a lot easier, whilst taking away excuses to be running inside for the kitchen sink.
How about setting up a summer photo booth? Decorate a corner of your garden with some Hawaiian decorations , grab some photo props and strike a pose! This idea is a staple for your selection of garden party games, as there’s no strict limits to it, people can come back to it whenever they fancy!
Grab a hula hoop and see who can spin it around their waist the longest. Make it harder by seeing who can run the furthest without letting the hoop drop!
Get competitive with a mini Olympics tournament! Set up different events around the garden (running races, long jump, throwing contests, etc). If you’re hosting an Olympic themed party, handing out trophies to the winners will give your event gold medal status.
Got a sandpit in your garden? Have a go at playing pass the sand! Put the whole group in a circle and give one player a handful of sand. See how far you can pass the sand around the circle by passing it from person to person, trying to drop as little as possible!
Yet another water balloon game for the garden , split the group into pairs and give each pair a water balloon. They must toss it from one to the other BUT whoever drops it (and pops it) is out. Play until there’s only one pair left (the winners).
Use a long piece of rope to play tug of war! Make sure the teams are equal in strength and let the tug of war begin!
This summer party game will take you back to school sports days! Put the group in pairs and tie each of their legs together with a scarf. Then race to the end of the garden as fast as you can without falling over!
If you’ve got a baseball bat and a ball, all you need is something to mark each base and your game of rounders can begin!
A frisbee is endless fun for kids and grown-ups alike… Just make sure you’ve got plenty of space!
Most people have a couple of badminton rackets knocking around in their garage – play for points or just for fun!
Draw a hopscotch pattern on the ground (on a patio would be perfect) and number each square. Start the game by throwing a small stone, button or bottle lid onto one of the squares – the one it lands on is the one you can’t step on. Then get hopping! This game will provide hours of fun for younger children.
Everyone loves playing piñata and it’s even more fun when you can take it outside! Pick a piñata and then tie it to a tree branch, basketball hoop or washing line for some outdoor fun!
Kids will love this classic outdoor game – if you get tagged by the person who’s “IT”, you’re “stuck” in that spot until someone else tags you.
Use chalk to draw a target on the patio. Then grab a bucket of water and a couple of sponges. Take turns throwing the sponges at the target, trying to get a bullseye!
A water pistol fight is endless fun – perfect for a hot summer day!
Limbo is the ultimate summer party game (perfect for anyone throwing a Hawaiian luau party!) You could get a proper limbo stick like this or improvise with a broom and a person to hold it at either end.
Remember doing wheelbarrow races on school sports days? This timeless game is still fun for kids today and a great way to have some fun outside! It’s also fun for adults too and will certainly test your strength… Although, maybe avoid it after drinking!
Last but not least, it’s the classic egg and spoon race! Give each player a boiled egg and a spoon and on your marks, get set, go!

Entertaining activities are the heart of any successful summer party, but adult guests require more sophisticated challenges than children's games offer. If the game is not challenging enough for the crowd, guests will become bored and disinterested in the activity. Planning more games than needed ensures you have something to replace any activities guests find dull.
A messy outdoor game of bocce will entertain adult guests. Bocce requires one small “target” ball and several large “tossing” balls. The small ball is thrown onto a flat surface, such as a lawn, and each player tries to toss his ball as close to the small one as possible. Egg bocce requires each guest to sign his eggs to personalize his “ball.” Each player takes a turn tossing a raw egg at the small target ball in an attempt to get the tossing ball close to the target without breaking the egg.
Plastic buckets, glasses and water are all you need to entertain party guests with a relay race. The game requires a starting line at one end of the yard and a line of buckets at the opposing end. A player on each relay team takes as big a drink of water as she can and quickly walks, without running, to the team’s bucket. Each player must spit the water into the bucket and race back to the team. The first team to fill a bucket wins the relay.
Though common for kid’s summer parties, a game of water balloon volleyball entertains and refreshes adults, too. A sheet draped over a clothesline or pieces of yarn secured across the playing area serve as a makeshift net for the game. Party guests split into two teams and follow basic volleyball rules, except that a water balloon serves as the ball. If the water balloon breaks on a team’s side, that team loses a point.
Small teams of guests work best for a relay race game. The game requires a starting line at one end of the lawn and a plastic bowl three to nine feet from the start. A player on each team places a cotton ball in the slingshot and tries to shoot the ball into the team’s bowl. If the player misses, he must run to the ball, grab it, put it into the bowl and dash back to the start. The first team to fill the bowl wins the game.
Adult couples will appreciate being entertained with a summer twist on a classic contest. Each couple uses basic pumpkin carving tools to turn a large watermelon into a carved piece of art within a specific time. Guests votes on which watermelon comes in first, second and third in the contest.
