Captain Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger, the celebrated pilot who safely landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in 2009, testified before Congress today, urging lawmakers to prioritize aviation safety reforms amid growing concerns over air traffic control staffing shortages and pilot training standards.

Sullenberger, a longtime safety advocate and former FAA advisor, warned that the rapid expansion of air travel, coupled with outdated infrastructure, could lead to increased risks. 'The miracle on the Hudson was not just luck—it was the result of rigorous training, experience, and a system that supported safety first,' he said. 'We cannot afford to become complacent.'

His testimony comes as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) faces scrutiny following a series of near-miss incidents at major airports. Sullenberger called for increased funding for air traffic control technology, mandatory advanced simulator training for pilots, and stricter regulations on pilot fatigue.

Lawmakers from both parties praised Sullenberger’s expertise, with Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) stating, 'Captain Sullenberger’s voice is critical in ensuring our skies remain the safest in the world.'

When asked about the rise of automated flight systems, Sullenberger cautioned, 'Technology is a tool, but human judgment remains irreplaceable.'

The hearing marks Sullenberger’s latest effort to shape aviation policy since his retirement. His 2009 'Miracle on the Hudson' saved all 155 passengers and crew, solidifying his legacy as a national hero.
