Ontario Lottery and gaming company is once again sending quarterly casino payments to local host communities. Greater Sudbury is once again on the receiving side as the municipality is home to Gateway Casino Sudbury. For the quarter ending March 31, 2023, the city received nearly C$445,000.

The Ontario provincial government is required by the municipal contribution agreement to allocate a portion of casino revenue to areas that host land-based gambling sites. Payment is determined using a standardized formula that applies uniformly to all state gaming facilities and features a gradual gaming revenue scheme for each region.

Just last week, Crown Agency provided Sudbury with its latest quarterly payment, which covers the period from January 1, 2023 to March 31, 2023, to attract Gateway Casino Sudbury. The amount allocated for the fourth quarter was C$444,925 and thus the total for OLG's entire fiscal year 2022-23 was C$1,929,529. Since the opening of the venue, the amount is close to C$48 million.

Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy expressed that the amount paid through OLG's City Contribution Agreement is contributing to the development of solid communities that provide excellent living standards for individuals and families. The revenue generated helps support local initiatives and critical utilities, and therefore plays an important role in improving the living conditions of the host community.

In addition to Sudbury and other Ontario municipalities, Wasa has also been approved for a fourth-quarter payment for hosting the recently launched Playtime Casino Wasa Beach. During the last quarter of the fiscal year, the property brought C$286,000 in tax game revenue to the town. The first payment for hosting the casino was approximately C$152,000 and was awarded in January 2023.

Under the current agreement, the town is to receive 5.25% of its first C$65 million and 3% of its next C$135 million for slot operations. Now the town council is tasked with finding where to invest. A draft of how casino revenues will be spent has been submitted to the previous Parliament. Meanwhile, revenue is added to the casino's reserve account

Sandra Watts, director of communications and intergovernmental relations for the town, shared that a second draft of the policy should be shown to the council at a meeting on May 25, 2023. She also noted that the draft will review feedback from council members as well as an investigation from last fall that questioned local residents about how the money should be spent.

Meanwhile, the payment from the OLG does not end here, as Niagara Falls received its fair share for hosting the country's two most premium casinos. CITY PAID A Q4 PAYMENT OF CA$3.93 MILLION FOR HOLDING THE CROWN INCORPORATION'S FALLSVIEW CASINO RESORT AND CASINA NIAGARA.
