My pixel 3a is capable of taking 4k photos, so I'm wondering why the photos always come out fairly grainy and with not much detail. I know the phone isn't new, but it was regarded as one of the best smartphone cameras, period when it came out.
I have the 14 pro max and the camera sucks it auto HDRs photos. Every image is processed and doesn't have the good depth of field on phones. The pixel has better processing then the iPhone but it don't get the depth of photos even my Canon Powershot G7 mark 2 takes better photos.
The short answer is due to fragmentation. A longer explanation is, there are so many differing Android smartphones that the app developers cannot code their apps for each and every variant so they are built for a general Android framework and do not take advantage of device specific hardware or api's.
I agree with you, on a cell phone screen sure, it might look similar, and it'll have better dynamic range due to auto HDR, but if you get the actual image files, jpeg vs jpeg, on a computer, the different is pretty big.
