После статьи о различиях между say и tell мне пришло много писем с просьбами объяснить разницу между глаголами look, see и watch.
Я с удовольствием это сделаю, но пойду немного дальше и расскажу вам про еще несколько глаголов, которые переводятся на русский как «смотреть».
Look – смотреть. Самая распространенная ошибка, связанная с этим глаголом – использование неправильного предлога. По аналогии с русским языком («смотреть на») часто говорят look on. Но необходимо запомнить, что с глаголом look в английском сочетается предлог at:
Look at the floor, there is something. – Посмотри на пол, там что-то есть.
We did not look at each other. – Мы не смотрели друг на друга.
Watch [wɔʧ] – тоже смотреть, но долго – наблюдать, следить.
Сразу же на ум приходит сочетание watch tv – смотреть телевизор. Глагол look в данном случае не передает идею, потому что телевизор мы смотрим долго и увлеченно, а это именно watch:
We watched a football match. – Мы смотрели футбольный матч.
They watched how the baby played. – Они смотрели, как ребенок играл.
Кроме того, watch имеет значение «следить за кем-либо» и «присматривать за кем-либо»:
I will watch the children. – Я присмотрю за детьми.
Watch how I do it and copy. – Наблюдай, как я это делаю и повторяй.
See – видеть. Если look – это процесс, то see – результат этого процесса.
Когда вы говорите «Я вижу», то лучше использовать глагол can, «я могу видеть»:
I can see something over there. – Я что-то там вижу.
Can you see me? – Вы меня видите?
Однако, есть некоторые ситуации, когда мы переводим глагол «смотреть», как see:
I want to see / look at your pictures. – Я хочу посмотреть на ваши фотографии.
I saw this movie last week. – Я смотрел этот фильм на прошлой неделе.
Let me see the map. – Дайте мне посмотреть на карту.
Stare – это тоже смотреть, но по-другому, пристально, вглядываться, уставиться, вытаращить глаза. Такой взгляд может быть расценен, как неприличный:
Why are you staring at me? – Почему ты уставился на меня?
When we entered, they stared at us in amazement. – Когда мы зашли, они посмотрели на нас в изумлении.
Do not stare at that man. – Не смотри так пристально на того мужчину.
Gaze – смотреть пристально, не отрываясь, с изумлением, удивлением или в задумчивости:
The children gazed at the elephant in surprise. – Дети глазели на слона с удивлением.
She can gaze at herself in the mirror for ages. – Она долго может смотреть на себя в зеркале.
Peer – вглядываться, всматриваться, пристально рассматривать. С этим глаголом можно встретить разные предлоги:
peer at something – пристально рассматривать что-либо
peer into something – вглядываться во что-либо
peer through something – вглядываться сквозь что-либо
The woman peered at the photograph. – Женщина вглядывалась в фотографию.
We peered into the distance but could not see anyone. – Мы смотрели вдаль, но никого не видели.
The tourists peered through the fog. – Туристы всматривались сквозь туман.
Glance – посмотреть мельком, взглянуть:
She glanced at the watch and stood up. – Она взглянула на часы и встала.
I glanced at the screen of his computer. – Я мельком посмотрел на экран его компьютера.
The woman glanced at me suspiciously. – Женщина посмотрела на меня подозрительно.
Glare – смотреть, только с какой-то отрицательной эмоцией (сердито или пристально, осуждающе и так далее):
He glared at the children angrily. – Он раздраженно посмотрел на детей.
She did not say anything, just glared at me. – Она не сказала ничего, только пристально посмотрела на меня.
Чтобы всегда выражать свои мысли четко, рекомендую вам запоминать как можно больше синонимов и обращать внимания на тонкие смысловые различия между ними.
