An attractive enamel badge for use by members of the South Suburban Gas Company’s sports club. The South Suburban Gas Company (SSGC) were based in Sydenham, Kent and was also know locally as the Kent Suburban Division. The SSGC used an image of the Crystal Palace building as its emblem which also appears on this badge.
The history of the SSGC goes back to c.1852 with the formation of two gas companies to service the Crystal Palace area and its developing suburbs. Expansion of the railways was also a factor for their location as they gave them easy access to coal, their raw material for gas production.
Here’s a brief timeline of the development of the SSGC at the Sydenham gas works;
1854 Amalgamation of two gas companies to form the Crystal Palace & District Gas Company. This new company would serve the Norwood, Dulwich, Streatham, Brixton, Sydenham, Forest Hill, Beckenham, Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth and Anerley areas.
1904 Name changed to the South Suburban Gas Company.
1949 British gas companies nationalised and the SSGC placed under the control of the newly formed South Eastern Gas Board (part of British Gas Ltd).
1969 Gas production ceases at the Sydenham works but the premises is retained by British Gas Ltd.
1973 British Gas is restructured and the old gas boards regions remain but now under centralised control.
1986 British Gas Ltd is privatised as a public listed company to form British Gas plc. This was the first major privatisation in Britain that the general public could buy shares in and was heavily promoted with the ‘If you see Sid….tell him…’ advertising campaign.
1996 A major part of the disused Sydenham site was sold off and developed as a Sainsbury Superstore. Two of the old gasometer storage tanks were retained.
