I wanted to add a font with Google Fonts, and I have noticed an odd behavior. I want to add a font with only the latin subset, I do not want latin-ext, cyrillic or cyrillic-ext subset, in order to

A general-purpose sans. Available as a "full family" variable font (covering the full range of weight, width, and italic variations, as shown here), or as subset versions with different combinations of weight, width, and italic axes as separate variable fonts.
As the mdn web docs state when no characters of that range are used, the specified font file is not downloaded. Creating subset font files When we look at the definition of the Inter Googlefonts @font-face declarations, we see the following supported "charsets" latin, latin-ext, vietnamese, greek, greek-ext, cyrillic and cyrillic-ext.
Cyrillic Extended [CyrE] This font contains all characters in the Cyrillic blocks (with the exception of some historic characters). It should be suitable for modern majority and minority languages. This font subset is intended for orthographic use only. We have not put anything in this subset for phonetic, transliteration, or transcription use.
Note: previously it was possible to specify default subsets in your next.config.js with the experimental.fontLoaders option, but this is no longer supported. Disable preloading for that font If it's not possible to preload your intended subset you can disable preloading.

Adding the subset solved the problem, thanks a lot! That should be the best answer.
Cyrillic (Basic) [Cyr] This font contains the characters used in Codepage 1251 (Cyrillic). It should be suitable for Russian and other large languages which use the Cyrillic script. This font subset is intended for orthographic use only. We have not put anything in this subset for phonetic, transliteration, or transcription use.

Hi, My theme comes with a handful selection of google fonts. I am very happy with the selection but I need to use them with the latin-ext subset/encoding. I don't know how to do it. Otherwise these fonts become useless to me. I don't use stacks, but I can edit CSS if needed.

As it is not technically possible to list all of these characters in a single page, this list is limited to a subset of the most important characters for English-language readers, with links to other pages which list the supplementary characters.
It has two files (one contains latin subset, the other one contains the rest supported subsets (latin-ext, vietnamese, cyrillic)). If latin, latin-ext, vietnamese are requested, both files get loaded all right.

So if you have a font used with some English headline and the text is updated live on the page and includes some Russian name in Cyrillic, the browser will then fetch the Cyrillic subset and use it :) The both links include subsets cyrillic and latin Right, the latin subset is default and always included.
ISO/IEC 8859-1 encodes what it refers to as " Latin alphabet no. 1 ", consisting of 191 characters from the Latin script. This character-encoding scheme is used throughout the Americas, Western Europe, Oceania, and much of Africa. It is the basis for some popular 8-bit character sets and the first two blocks of characters in Unicode.
Extended Latin (latin-ext) and Vietnamese subsets are missing many characters. This directly affects Andika, Charis SIL, and Gentium Plus, but would affect any font family that has rich extended Latin support.
The fonts also contain high-quality glyphs for the Western European subset of the Latin script. The glyphs for basic Greek and the Russian subset of the Cyrillic script look fine in isolation but are kerned to match the width of Kanji blocks.
You're getting a warning that you have not specified a subset to be preloaded. The @next/font/google font Fira Code has no selected subsets. Please specify subsets in the function call or in your next.config.js, otherwise no fonts will be preloaded.
If you only want the latin subset, then you can select almost any font, as most support latin. Latin extended is also supported by a vast majority. Greek and Cyrillic is less supported, so you have a choice of fewer fonts. The remaining subsets even less so, with some only being available in around half a dozen fonts.
Each language has its own nuances, and when we use different scripts, there are further typographic considerations to keep in mind.
Q: How many languages are written with the Latin or Cyrillic script? Both the Latin and Cyrillic scripts are used to write an extensive range of languages, but the Latin script is used far and away for the largest number of languages for any script.

There are three options available to convert: Just the Cyrillic displayed with no latin text Cyrillic text with the original latin alphabet below Cyrillic text with the original latin characters above. For example, "Learning Russian is fun" becomes " (Леарнинг Руссиан ис фун".

All of your characters in cyrillic are being represented as single bytes. Currently, those bytes are in the ISO 8859-1 encoding, also known as Latin-1, which is a subset of the Windows English code page, Cp1252.

This font includes Latin script support for Europe, Eastern Europe, Western and Central Asia — all languages in Europe and Eurasia which use the Latin script.
It looks like this works fine with formal subsets (e.g. latin, latin-ext, cyrillc), but it appears that specifying a particular character range does not work with this same syntax for multiple fonts (using text= instead of subset=). When specifying text=, only the first requested font displays correctly.

I'm trying to use the second style set, the one with the slightly rotated "e". I use Google's CDN, the semi-bold variation in both Cyrillic and Latin. I tried both: font-feature-settings: "ss01"; font-feature-settings: "salt" 1; but they don't seem to change anything. I would be very grateful if you could help. Thanks again and kind regards ...
What about adding additional entrypoints like typeface-thefont/latin-ext, typeface-thefont/cyrillic etc.? The default would be /latin so it's fully backward compatible solution. Sounds quite easy to use as well as to implement I think. I'd like to contribute if you like the idea, @KyleAMathews ?

0 Note that the link to the font says "subset=Latin". This is usually sufficient for ASCII-only text; for characters with diacritics, you need latin-ext, which means "extended Latin characters." This set should cover pretty much all characters used in European, Latin-script using languages (not Cyrillic, obviously).

Recursive doesn't include any Cyrillic characters, even less of the Extended Cyrillic range. Expected behavior Please remove subsets: "cyrillic-ext". This will not be missed by anyone, as the subset does not supply any characters, and it will avoid finding the typeface in a search for fonts that support the Extended Cyrillic range.
