On a subaru they generally come off the uppipe. Here is an example made by ultimate racing. The uppipe is black and the dump tube is raw stainless. Exhaust gas goes into the wastegate from the uppipe and out the dump tube once pressure to the wastegate actuator has overcome the spring pressure. The dump tube follows the path of the downpipe. Aside from adjusting the wastegate, which really only works to a partial extent, you can try wrapping your downpipe that may help insulate you from some of the wastegate noises. Oh and don't forget to bump your wastegate arm back a few turns so you're back down to 16 psi.

The real garage queen finally got its upgrade. 16G Blouch turbo, Tial external wastegate and a Grimmspeed boost controller.
The advantage of the External Wastegate is to help the turbocharger operate more efficiently. This is done by relieving a large amount of back pressure pre-turbine housing.
