Many great romances begin with love at first sight. This is not one of them. In fact, the first time the couple who owns this circa 2000 home laid eyes on their current abode, they were less than wowed. At the time, they had just found themselves homeless after selling their Sanibel residence faster than expected.
When they happened upon the 3,800-square-foot, one-bedroom, two-story home with a six-car garage in Fort Myers’ St. Charles neighborhood, they were confused. The use of space in the home made no sense. “Both my husband and the designer were adamant that I do not buy this home, so, obviously, I ignored them,” the homeowner says.
In order to placate her husband and the designer, Dwayne Bergmann, she agreed that if they were to buy the property, they could renovate and flip it once they built their dream home. “The plan was for some cosmetic upgrades and just one or two structural changes,” Bergmann says. “But when we started, the scope drastically changed. There was a three-story addition that became a master suite. We then gutted the house, designed a new exterior and added a pool. Needless to say, we didn’t follow my initial plan for this house.”
That’s because his client had a vision of her own. Approximately five years later, the now-7,200-square-foot, five-bedroom, seven-bathroom house is almost done, and it’s safe to say the owners aren’t going anywhere. Bergmann, for his part, can trace back to the exact moment when the project took its turn from flip to forever home. “Early in the design process, you have to choose the flooring. It sets the framework for the other finishes,” he explains. “I showed [my client] some porcelain options, as well as a couple of engineered-wood options, and neither struck a chord with her. I took her to look at a large-format, 36-by-36-inch marble in Miami, and she was immediately drawn to it.” It was the same with the large-scale walnut flooring. So, they went with both. “That completely changed the trajectory of the project—the ceiling detail, molding detail, the [primary] suite with his-and-her separate bathrooms, and so on.”
The new plan for the old home evolved into a reflection of the Maryland-based owners’ tastes and a setting fit for the artifacts they’ve gathered during 40 years of traveling the world. The architectural changes and additions created spaces suitable for entertaining and displaying their belongings—though determining what to use and where to place the treasured objects proved to be the most formidable challenge. Tractor-trailers filled with furnishings, art and collectibles arrived at various intervals, forcing Bergmann to regularly reshuffle rooms to incorporate the arrivals. A total of five trucks eventually found their way to the property, which made shopping for furnishings fairly uncomplicated. “There are only five pieces of new furniture in the entire home—everything else was collected,” Bergmann says. “Ultimately, there is no one theme.”
From the main-floor grand library to the second-floor family room (with its suede wall applications), the home refuses to fit neatly into any one category. The sweeping grand staircase, glamorous dining room, well-equipped kitchen and spaces between, showcase a mix of British colonial, transitional, contemporary and traditional influences. “It’s the layers that tell the story, and this is a very layered house,” Bergmann says.
The overall aesthetic, he notes, is traditional, with that been-there-forever elegance that comes from a lifetime of collecting and artful arranging.

Today was the second time bringing my goldendoodle, Luci to The Royal Treatment. She is an extremely hyper pup, so I am always nervous dropping her off. But everyone does a fantastic job making us feel comfortable and welcomed when we walk in. I am often very picky about how I want her groomed, but Shameka has exceeded all expectations. She texts me pictures and updates reassuring me my girl is being taken care of. Thank you for taking such good care of my Luci!
I won't let anyone else touch my pup. Amanda and her staff knock it out of the park every time. My geriatric fur baby got the "bad dog" fee at a not-to-name national chain each time. I warned Amanda about this and she was stunned when i picked her up. She said she was no problem at all, no nipping, no growling. I have been taking Sophie here for about 4 years now. She has had the same groomer and I have never had any issues at all. They are always able to get her in when I have called. When I pick her up she always smelling and looking good with a big smile on her face. Because I had a bad experience a few years ago somewhere else, when I first took her here, I asked to see the back area. It was very clean all dogs were in great care. Groomers seemed very kind and were being very nice to the dogs. Since I been coming here for awhile now and always in a Saturday I have seen many dogs before and after, and I thought they all looked good. I would recommend taking your dog here.
This was Timber's first time getting a sanitary cut, I was really nervous about it because he can be stubborn at times (like most huskies) and he doesn't like his feet touched and I've heard bad things of dogs getting mistreated at other groomers. That was not the case here. His groomer, Meka, did a wonderful job on him! From the moment I walked in everyone was so nice and welcoming, it made me feel okay about leaving him there. They said such nice things about him and he left looking great! Thank you Royal Treatment and Meka for taking care of my boy!
We are very pleased with the Royal Treatment. They are always professional and kind. They take great notes. They know how you want your pet groomed, so you don't have to repeat yourself every visit. They are also attentive while grooming. Any concerns or unusual characteristics observed while grooming are reported so that the owner is alerted to possible problems with his/her fur baby. My "boy" comes back smelling good and looking great!

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical technique used for over 3,000 years in China, Japan and Korea. Needles are placed in designated points to effect various changes in the body to decrease pain, help heal injuries or disease conditions, stimulate or regulate immune responses, and/or decrease anxiety or behavioral issues.
Chiropractors use spinal “adjustments” to reduce subluxation and help restore vital nervous system communication. The chiropractic method of pain inhibition is a combination of mechanical, soft tissue, neurological and physiological aspects.
Animals benefit from massage very much like people do. Our massage therapists work with different techniques to do both gentle and deep tissue massage. The massages can be invaluable to the healing process. Massage increases circulation to problem areas, stretches muscles that are poorly or improperly used due to injury or disease, and sometimes just helps a spasming muscle to finally relax.
In humans, physical therapy is widely used to help people recover from trauma, surgeries, illnesses, arthritis, obesity and other problems. We use similar techniques to help animals recover from many of the same conditions.
There are a number of therapies that can be used. The underwater treadmill is one method. We also can use or recommend therapeutic exercises, agility techniques, theraband limb work, exercise balls, proprioception equipment, or therapeutic clothing. We work with the animal and the owner to design a program that will work best for them.
The Royal Treatment Veterinary Center (RTVC), under the supervision of Dr. Barbara Royal, is a veterinary facility for veterinary rehabilitation, acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, herbal and nutritional consultation, holistic medicine, and chronic care. Dr. Royal has been a veterinarian for over 20 years, graduating with high honors from the University of Illinois in 1995. She has completed certification coursework in Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and has been trained in Veterinary Rehabilitation. She has practiced acupuncture and alternative medicine for over 13 years. She has also been a specialist at the Veterinary Specialty Center, general medicine practitioner at Family Pet Animal Hospital, emergency veterinarian, and an exotic/zoo consultant.
