Middle School Youth As Young As 12 Engaging In Risky Sexual Activity https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/04/090408145354.htm
Middle school youth are engaging in sexual intercourse as early as age 12, according to a new study. Researchers examined sexual risk behaviors among middle school students in a large southeastern US urban public school district.
Middle school youth are engaging in sexual intercourse as early as age 12, according to a study by researchers at The University of Texas School of Public Health.
Results from this study are published in the April issue of Journal of School Health.
Christine Markham, Ph.D., assistant professor of behavioral science at the UT School of Public Health, and colleagues examined sexual risk behaviors among middle school students in a large southeastern U.S. urban public school district.
“This is one of the few school-based studies conducted with this age group to look at specific sexual practices in order to develop more effective prevention programs,” Markham said. “This study shows that although most seventh graders are not engaging in sexual risk behaviors, a small percentage are putting themselves at risk.”
In the study, Markham and colleagues defined sexual intercourse as vaginal, oral or anal sex. According to their research, by age 12, 12 percent of students had already engaged in vaginal sex, 7.9 percent in oral sex, 6.5 percent in anal sex and 4 percent in all three types of intercourse.
Markham said, “These findings are alarming because youth who start having sex before age 14 are much more likely to have multiple lifetime sexual partners, use alcohol or drugs before sex and have unprotected sex, all of which puts them at greater risk for getting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or becoming pregnant.”
The study found one-third of sexually active students reported engaging in vaginal or anal sex without a condom within the past three months, and one-fourth had four or more partners. The more experienced students in all three types of intercourse were more likely to be male and African-American.
“We need to develop prevention programs that address the needs of students who are not yet sexually active in order to promote skills and attitudes to help them wait until they are older to have sex,” Markham said. “And we need to provide skills and knowledge related to condoms and contraception for youth who are already sexually active.”
The study recommends that sexually active students also need to receive accurate and factual information and services related to STDs and pregnancy testing, as well as skills for future abstention and risk reduction for those who intend to remain sexually active.
More than one-third of youth in the study reported engaging in precoital touching behaviors. Among the students who engaged in precoital behavior, 43 percent reported having engaged in sexual intercourse.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 80 percent of the 435,427 births to mothers ages 15 to 19 were the result of unintended pregnancies. According to the National Vital Statistics Report, birth rates among Hispanic and black teens remain higher than other racial/ethnic groups, including rates among those ages 10 to 14.
In 2000, youth between the ages of 15 and 24 accounted for 9.1 million or 48 percent of all new STD cases, according to a report by the CDC. Minority youth also are disproportionately affected. The CDC’s 2006 STD Surveillance Report stated that minority racial and ethnic populations had higher rates of STDs when compared to whites and, although black teens represent only 17 percent of U.S. teenagers, they account for 70 percent of HIV/AIDS cases reported among teens. “We need more research to develop effective interventions, in particular for youth of color living in underserved areas,” Markham said.
“A common misperception among adolescents is that oral or anal intercourse is not as risky for STD transmission,” said Markham. “But transmission of non-viral and viral STDs can occur through all three types of intercourse when condoms are not used.”
These findings clearly indicate the need for open discussion about sexual health at the middle school level, Markham said. “It is critical that health education teachers and school nurses feel comfortable addressing these issues with their students and that their efforts are supported by parents and the school administration,” she added.

Fort Myers, Fla. – Students and parents are in shock after a group of teenagers had sex in a high school bathroom in Fort Myers, Florida, and then posted a video of the act on social media .
A teenage girl had sex with as many as two dozen boys after school Tuesday afternoon at South Fort Myers High School, according to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
Deputies said 25 males were spotted via a hallway camera entering the restroom while the female was inside, the News-Press reported .
“A bunch of football players went into a room with a girl and had sex with her, and a bunch of the football players were suspended,” student Alex Bailey told WBBH . “So we might not have a football team this year.”
“The fact that that could’ve happened is just crazy in my mind,” another student said.
Parent Megan Roldan said the incident proves some parents need to be more aware of what their children are getting up to when school ends.
“And apparently, obviously the parents need to be talking to their kids more,” Roldan told WINK . “And being aware of what their children are doing after school.”
Even though the incident happened after hours, some students are wondering where the administration was when all of this was going on.
“I just don’t see how that could’ve happened because there is so much security in there,” student Erin Bollinger said. “Like the teachers are really on top of all of that.”
Students said the entire thing was filmed and then posted on social media.
“There’s girls that saw the video once and it hurt, it is just so disturbing to them,” student Casey Winn said.
Some parents question how this could have happened at the school.
“Well, they should be walking around the halls and things like that and know where the kids are,” Roldan said.
But others said they trust the school district to handle the situation
“I trust them to take care of it,” one woman said. “I really do think that that is their job and they will take care of it.”
The sheriff’s office said the girl’s mother is not planning to press charges.
A school district official said the students involved have been disciplined.

A Florida substitute teacher was busted for having sex with a teenage student who allegedly shared one of their trysts in a Snapchat video, law enforcement officials said.
Ayanna Davis, 20, a substitute English teacher at Lakeland High School, was arrested on Friday after she admitted to having unprotected sex with the student four times — twice at her house and twice at the victim’s house, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release .
Davis’ admission matched with statements made by the victim, whose exact age wasn’t disclosed but was listed in the release as 16 years old or younger .
Authorities launched a probe of the teacher on Dec. 3, after a student informed the school’s resource officer that a Snapchat video was circulating that showed Davis having sex with a student. The video was reportedly shown to a large group of the school’s football team.
Law enforcement officials have not yet been able to view the video, but are working on tracking it down.
“I know it’s out there someplace,” Sheriff Grady Judd told WFLA .
After her interview with police, Davis was charged by the sheriff’s office with two counts of sexual battery by custodian and offenses against students by an authority figure. She additionally was charged with two additional counts of sexual battery by the Lakeland Police Department.
“This is a clear violation of sexual battery laws. She was in a position of influence over the victim, and she took advantage of that for her own twisted pleasure,” Judd said.
She made her first court appearance on Dec. 11, when a $60,000 bond was ordered for all five charges. She is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 10, 2022.
According to officials, Davis is not a Polk County Public Schools employee, but served at Lakeland High School as a substitute teacher through staffing company Kelly Education Services.
The company has been instructed that Davis is no longer able to work in any Polk County public schools, officials said.
“We expect substitute teachers to uphold the same high standards of conduct and professionalism as our full-time educators,” said Superintendent Frederick Heid in a statement . “The charges against this person are disgraceful and a complete violation of the trust that teachers build with their students. There is no room in our schools for this type of conduct.”
The Polk County school district changed its policy in October permitting anyone 20 years old or older with a high school or GED diploma to be a substitute teacher, according to WFLA.
