A social media video clip reportedly showing two students having sex in a Maryland high school classroom is under investigation by school officials and legal authorities.
The incident occurred in a classroom within Woodlawn High School, a school in the Baltimore County town of Gwynn Oak. Upon learning of the video, Principal Jamel Jernigan alerted parents in an October 8 letter. The letter has only recently been reported by local media.
"I was recently made aware of a social media post of a video involving Woodlawn High School students engaged in highly inappropriate behavior while in class," the letter said, according to WJZ-TV.
"An investigation is underway with school administration, our [Baltimore County Public Schools] safety manager and the Baltimore County Police Department," the letter continued.
Jernigan's letter didn't specify how many students were involved, their ages or the date of the incident. A student is believed to have recorded the incident, the aforementioned news outlet noted. It's also unclear if the alleged sex act or the reposting of the video constituted crimes.
The principal's letter did state, however, that students could be subject to possible disciplinary action if their behavior was found to be "inappropriate for the school environment."
The school has reportedly declined to comment on the case beyond acknowledging the existence of the principal's letter.
Newsweek contacted the Baltimore County Police Department for comment.
The recording and transfer of sexual content between teens have become more common as more teens own smartphones, the journal Pediatrics reported in May 2019.
At least 1 in 4 teens has received sexually explicit texts or emails, according to an April 2018 study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics . Approximately 1 in 12 teens has forwarded sexual content to others without the consent of the sexual partners involved, the study added.
Sometimes sexual content is sent out to others as a form of cyberbullying known as "revenge porn." Revenge porn, which can originate from a former sexual partner or someone else who recorded other people's sex acts without their knowledge, is often meant to shame sexual partners.
U.S. state laws on teen sexting vary widely from state to state. The laws and their application depend on several factors. Those factors include the age of the people involved, the explicitly graphic nature of the content itself and how widely the content is shared.
Some states have decriminalized the production and sharing of teenage sexual content between teens, as long as the creation and sharing are consensual. Other states punish teen sexting as a misdemeanor charge or with felony child pornography charges.
Maryland has laws forbidding revenge porn, according to Cyberbulling.org. Maryland teens who engage in sexting can receive up to 20 years in prison and a lifetime sexual offender status for producing or possessing teen sexual content, the Pediatrics article noted.
"Interestingly, in these states, a teen sexter can be charged as both an offender and a victim," the article said.

Police are investigating after a video of two New Britain High School students having sex in class circulated online.
The New Britain Board of Education notified the police department about the video on Thursday. Police said the two students involved have been identified and that the sex was consensual. The students, a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, were each issued a juvenile summons charging them with one count of public indecency and risk of injury or impairing the morals of children.
The Consolidated School District of New Britain released the following statement:
"On Thursday, there was an incident at New Britain High School that involved inappropriate conduct between a male and female student. NBHS Administration was notified of the situation immediately after it occurred and took swift action. This included opening an investigation and alerting all appropriate authorities.
The investigation, which is now being conducted by the New Britain Police Department, is ongoing. As such, we have no further comments at this time."
The investigation is ongoing and police say more arrests are possible.

UNIVERSITY chiefs have launched an investigation after shocking a video showed two students having sex in a study room.
The clip was filmed by a student as the couple romped in full view of fellow undergraduates at Birmingham City University.
The footage, which was shared on social media on Saturday, shows the man and woman through a window in the study room's doors.
They seem to be unaware or uncaring that their activities can easily be watched by other students.
As the camera zooms out, the student filming can be heard exploding with laughter.
The footage was shared online by the student with the caption: "Anyone thinking of coming BCU? Think again. This is our study room for you lot."
BCU said they were aware of the clip and were investigating claims it took place on their property.
The video, which clocked up more than 5,000 likes before being removed from Twitter, has shocked social media users.
@JUGGING4L wrote: "My university disgracing me again." @OnlyYouPhilly added: "The new generation are built differently."
@JMilan said: "They didn't even think to turn the lights off." And @zish1995 replied: "What the hell I wasn't expecting that, I'm not booking those private rooms again."
Famous alumni of BCU include comedian Frank Skinner, Duran Duran star John Taylor and BBC broadcaster Charlie Stayt.
A BCU spokesperson said: “We are aware of footage being circulated online of an incident on one of our campuses.
"Students who have breached University policies in any way, including those who originally shared the video online, are currently subject to disciplinary proceedings.
“Despite repeated requests Twitter has yet to acknowledge or act on our urgent insistence over 36 hours ago to remove the original and subsequent posts which contravene Twitter’s rules on the sharing of content, and may breach revenge porn laws.
"Twitter needs to take immediate action to remove this content.”

Fletcher Middle School parents were alerted to an “inappropriate” and “obscene” video shared with students through AirDrop and text message.
Parents told Action News Jax the video appeared to show two students having sex.
“I was very sad and I was very upset for what happened,” parent Carolina Belaez said. “I told my daughter she has to be careful with technology and with cell phones.”
In a call home to parents, Principal Joe McKenzie said, “This is a very serious matter, and we are working with law enforcement on the investigation. We have already identified one individual allegedly involved, and police continue to investigate. As police identify others responsible, I assure you that I will take appropriate disciplinary action at the school, and consequences may also include criminal charges.”
Jacksonville Beach Police said detectives have given out multiple juvenile citations as well. If a student receives the video, they’re asked to contact administrators or police.
Theresa Rulien, the president and CEO of Child Guidance Center said while the topic might be uncomfortable, it’s best for parents to approach it with confidence.
“When we act like something is uncomfortable to us, it immediately tells them ‘uh oh, I’m not supposed to talk about that,’” she said. “Give the idea that ‘We’re in this as a partners and it’s not a hierarchy. I’m here to protect you. But we’re in this together’ — makes it a lot easier.”
Experts recommend setting AirDrop mode to contacts only and only accept content from people you know.
Action News Jax’s Law & Safety Expert Dale Carson explained because teens were allegedly in the video, it could be considered child pornography.
“These are extraordinary charges if it involves underage individuals engaging in sexual behavior,” he said. “This is going to be something that’s fully investigated. They’ll use tracking on the internet to determine who did what, when, and who filmed it. That person can be charged with child production. Which is a 20 year offense.”
Principal McKenzie said, “While I am disappointed by this event, it does provide an opportunity to ask for your support in talking to your children about the appropriate use of the technology available to them on their phones. Creating or sharing inappropriate content can have life changing consequences.”
Duval County Public Schools and Jacksonville Beach Police could not release any additional information at this time.
You can read the full message from Principal McKenzie below:
“Good afternoon Fletcher Middle School families, this is Principal McKenzie calling.
“Unfortunately, I’m calling to share some disappointing news, but it is news I believe you need to be aware of as parents.
“We recently learned that someone shared an inappropriate, obscene video with students via text message and AirDrop.
“This is a very serious matter and we are working with law enforcement on the investigation.
“We’ve already identified one individual allegedly involved and police continue to investigate.
“As police identify others responsible, I assure you that I will take appropriate disciplinary action at the school and consequences may also include criminal charges.
“While I’m disappointed by this event, it does provide an opportunity to ask for your support in talking to your children about the appropriate use of the technology available to them on their phones.
“Creating or sharing inappropriate content can have life-changing consequences. If a student receives this type of content, they should not share it. Rather, it should be reported to a school administrator or police officer as quickly as possible.
“Because your child’s well being is important to us, please know that school counselors are available to speak with any student who may need support processing this incident.
“Feel free to let me know if your child needs that support, and as always, thank you for your continued support of Fletcher Middle School. Do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions. Thank you.”
