A former Michigan middle school teacher faces life in prison after pleading no contest to trying to kill his wife by slitting her throat — and admitting to an 18-month sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student, PEOPLE confirms.

On Tuesday, James Philip Chelekis, 32, of Wyoming, Michigan, pleaded no contest to assault with intent to murder, according to court records obtained by PEOPLE.

Chelekis sliced his wife’s throat open during an argument in June while the couple’s children were home, the Detroit Free Press reports. The children were not aware of the attack at the time and were not harmed, the outlet reports.

Chelekis, who taught math at Crestwood Middle School in the Kentwood Public School District for six years, also pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

In exchange for his pleas, the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office dismissed a charge of carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, Mlive.com reports.

The three charges — all felonies – could land him in prison for life. He is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 23 for sentencing. He remains in the Kent County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Police were called to the couple’s Wyoming home shortly before 6 a.m. on June 27 and found the man’s wife, Amanda Chelekis, 33, with her throat cut from one end to the other, Mlive.com reported at the time.

She miraculously survived the attack, telling police her husband tried to kill her, according to local news station WZZM 13.

Chelekis told police that he armed himself with a knife during an argument with his wife, Mlive.com reported, citing court records. During the fight, he said both he and his wife fell, which caused the injuries to her throat.

But court records also show that police found that she had defensive wounds on her hands that were consistent with a knife attack, WZZM 13 reports.

During the investigation of the attack, police learned that Chelekis was having a sexual relationship with a then 14-year-old student at the middle school where he taught, Mlive.com reports.

Now 15, the student told police that she and Chelekis had a sexual relationship for a year and a half, according to Mlive.com. Text messages and photos confirmed the relationship, police said, according to Mlive.com.

Police said Chelekis’ wife didn’t know about the relationship with the student until after the attack. She filed for divorce shortly after the attack, court records show.

The school district placed Chelekis on administrative leave after criminal charges were filed. He is no longer employed by the district.

Chelekis attorney, Shawn Perry, tells PEOPLE, “Mr. Chelekis has accepted responsibility and it has been very important to him that he cause no more pain to the victims.”

In a statement to PEOPLE, Kent County Prosecuting Attorney Christopher Becker writes, “This has to be one of the more troubling cases I’ve seen in my time in this office. To slit the mother of your children’s throat, and then to hold her there while she’s bleeding, and texting the teen-aged girl you’ve been molesting during all of this shows a complete callousness that is rarely seen even in my line of work.”

Calls for comment to the district attorney were not immediately returned.

A former Missouri high school teacher has been sentenced to four years in prison for sexually abusing a 16-year-old female student in the closet of the school library and in his home, PEOPLE confirms.

William Nathan Herrington was sentenced on Friday after pleading guilty to statutory sodomy and sexual contact with a student, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

The former teacher was arrested in October 2014 after he was accused of pursuing a sexual relationship with a female student through social media, handwritten notes and emails.

On Friday, the victim, now in college, appeared in court to face her abuser. She shared with the court how the abuse turned her life upside down, according to the Springfield News-Leader.

The paper reports that the victim tearfully said she “didn’t feel safe walking the halls” and that her friends began to shun her, calling her a “slut” and “homewrecker.”

“Mr. Herrington, you should have never done what you did to me,” she said, according to the News Leader.

Greene County Judge Tom Mountjoy acknowledged the victim’s presence in the courtroom by saying, “The pain is palpable and everyone can feel it.” He added, “The pain of what has happened and the pain of what could happen.”

According to the documents, Ash Grove School District officials were notified of Herrington’s actions when the victim’s parents located several emails between the teen and teacher. The messages “indicated that sexual contact had occurred” between Herrington and the victim.

At the time of the incident, the victim was 16-years-old, the documents state. The abuse began when Herrington followed the victim on Twitter on October 1, 2014, and began sending her messages of a sexual nature, the teen told authorities.

“[He] wouldn’t stop sending messages,” the documents state. “Herrington made her feel guilty, and she would go along with it because she was terrified and scared of how he would react if she didn’t.”

Herrington’s advances became physical, the victim told investigators, when he began to touch her on the buttocks whenever she left his classroom. Eventually, Herrington began sending the victim messages that said “closet time” to get her to join him in the school library’s storage closet.

Once inside, Herrington would sexually abuse the victim. These episodes in the closet occurred at least 10 times over a two-week period, the victim said.

On Oct. 9, the victim went over to Herrington’s house, where he forced her on the couch and abused her.

The victim told police she was once again too scared to say anything and that she was “putty in his hands.”

Afterwards, Herrington sent the teen messages asking if her parents monitored her phone. He said he could go to jail for having a sexual relationship with her, acknowledging that she was underage.

During the sentencing, Herrington apologized for his actions, the News Leader reports. .

“I know that nothing I can say can take away the pain I’ve caused and I am sorry,” he said through tears.

Prosecution and Herrington’s attorney Teresa Grantham could not be reached for comment.

Chris Harris has been a senior true crime reporter for PEOPLE since late 2015. An award-winning journalist who has worked for Rolling Stone and MTV News, Chris enjoys prog rock, cycling, Marvel movies, IPAs, and roller coasters.

A disgraced California teacher who slashed his own throat last year upon learning he’d been convicted of sexual assaulting a teenage relative was sentenced on Friday to 46 years to life behind bars, PEOPLE confirms.

In addition to the substantial prison sentence he received in California’s Orange County Superior Court, 57-year-old Jeffrey Scott Jones must also register as a sex offender.

Jones received the maximum sentence after his conviction, in October, on two felony counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one count of continuous sexual abuse.

His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment about the sentencing.

Authorities say Jones continually sexually assaulted his victim between 2012 and 2013, beginning when she was 13 — raping her on two occasions.

Prosecutors have said that after raping the girl, he told her “he would ruin her life if she told anyone what he was doing.”

Jones learned his fate on Friday after a statement from his victim was read aloud in court. In it, she acknowledged the work of the judge and prosecutors for “bringing justice to a nightmare that I wouldn’t wish on anybody.”

The victim also addressed Jones directly.

“The past few years have been challenging and difficult,” she said in her statement. “From homelessness, missing meals, group homes, juvenile hall and feeling hopeless and unloved by my own mother, you broke and brought me down to feel worthless.

“There were days I blamed myself, thinking I did something wrong to the point that I wanted to take my life.”

“I want you to listen closely: I was a little girl and you took my innocence,” the victim’s statement continued. “You are a pathetic excuse of a human. Parents and kids trusted you to be a teacher, not a predator.”

In May 2013, Huntington Beach police became aware of allegations against Jones, and he was arrested after a month-long investigation.

Jones worked as a teacher for 27 years and was teaching advanced placement English in Huntington Park, California, when he was arrested.

He was fired in March 2014, according to authorities. The victim was not one of his students.

During Jones’ trial, another girl testified that she and a third girl were also sexually assaulted by him. Both girls, prosecutors said, were Jones’ former students.

As his guilty verdict was read on Oct. 19, Jones used a razor blade to slice his throat in the courtroom. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released.

Prosecutors confirm Jones’ victim was disowned by her family after his abuse came to light.

But, in her statement, the teen said she would not let Jones’ crimes define her.

“Today, I am sober, graduated high school early, and I am about to start college,” she said. “I have family and a support system that you can’t take from me.

“I refuse to allow your abuse to stop the woman I want to become.”
