Linking together eight characterful mountain huts, this horseshoe-shaped route around the Stubai Valley oscillates between breathtaking passes and enchanting valleys, while affording hikers non-stop views of serrated peaks, shimmering lakes, and magnificent glaciers. Note : The information below is largely directed towards independent hikers, rather than folks going as part of organised trekking groups. At a Glance. Distance : 80 km 50 mi. Average Duration: 7 to 9 days see How Long will it Take? Finish : Neder. High Point : Grawagrubennieder — m 9, ft. Lowest Elevation : Neustift — m 3, ft. Which direction? I hiked in a counter-clockwise direction, and the Cicerone guide books referenced below describe the trail in a clockwise direction. Stage 6 — Approaching Grawagrubennieder Pass on a chilly autumnal morning. Mountain tarn at sunset on stage 4 just below Niederl Col 2, m. Stage 6 — Chamois drinking in the valley views. Stage 2 and 3 — After a day spent hiking in less than stellar conditions, the dramatically located Innsbrucker Hut or at least its cozy winter room was a sight for sore eyes. Yours truly in the very plush, solar-powered, and apparently brand spanking new, winter room of the Neue Regensberger Hut. Stage 4 — Descending towards Sulzenau Hut. Is there a case of Stiegl in there or what? Gear List — Stubai High Trail. The base weight for my mid-October hike of the Stubai High Trail was 5. Can you suggest any guidebooks for hiking there and Germany please! This trip looks fantastic! Very keen to get over there and hike when ever we can travel again!! Howdy Swami, Thanks for the inspiring photos. Peace, Reaper. Hey Reaper, Great to hear from you and thanks for the kind words. It has been a long time since the PCT in ! I hope both you and Hot Pants are doing well. Cheers, Swami. This may have pushed me over and made me decide to carry my microspike on the Alta Via next week. The forecast is looking chilly. This is a great, very thorough breakdown of your trip. Nice pictures, too! The Alps always on my bucket list and Stubai High Trail is first priority on my adventure, your post helps a lot to organize this epic journey. Hi Cam, thank you for this wonderfully inspiring website! I would also plan to sleep in the winter rooms. I see you went with a proper tent as backup. After your experience, would you recommend doing that rather than going with a Tarp or Gatewood Cape? And would you rather go with a 0C or C sleeping bag? Thank you! In regard to your questions, I was in the Alps for a couple of months in , and I felt that a tent was a better overall option for the trip i. Great write-up. Thanks for the very useful info and guidebook recommendations for the Stubai Hoehenweg. Are mid-height hiking boots not necessary or not recommended? I was planning to bring medium support uninsulated Goretex Asolo boots. I have a 26l and 36l to choose from. I understand it provides priority for reservations but we will be in the beginning of low season. Re: Footwear — Largely a question of personal preference. Your boots would also work fine; 2. The Cicerone guide I mention in the article has a rundown of the benefits and may help in your decision. Thanks for the write-up and amazing website in general. Thanks very much! Hi Dan, Thanks for the message. Yes, there are options for shorter versions of the hike. See the Cicerone guide I mention in the article for details. Been following your adventures since , and your write ups for trails in Peru, Argentina and Chile have been very helpful on my 6 month backpacking trip there! My questions regarding the Stubai High trek: Is there a designated camping ground for travelers who prefer to sleep in a tent at the locations of the huts? In addition, do you need to make reservations in advance for camping or lodging in the huts? Regarding your questions: 1. During the regular hiking season, you will likely need to make reservations for lodging in the huts. As I mentioned in the post, I hiked the Stubai High Trail out of the normal season, so there was no need to make reservations to sleep in the winter rooms. The main sections of all the huts were closed. Hi Cam, your website is great! So helpful. You say the Stubai section Nurnberger to Sulzenau was one of your favourites. Please can you tell me if it is hard or technically challenging? I have alot of mountain walking experience but dont like scrambling or paths which are very exposed. Many thanks. Hi Ruth, Thanks for the kind words. If memory serves, there was nothing particularly technical about that stage. Just a very beautiful stretch of trail! All the best, Cam. Hi Cam, I am heading out to the Stubai this summer. Fit and good Walker but no technical mountaineering. Are there dangerous areas of the trail given no mountaineering knowledge? I worry about crevasses etc. Best of luck! Hi Cam, How do you think, is it possible and allowed to stay in winter rooms with a dog? I am planing trail in the middle of September. If I had to guess, I would say probably not at least during the main season , but your best bet would be to give the huts a call to confirm one way or the other. Best of luck, Cam. Hi Cam, I really enjoyed reading this like everything else on this website. I really want to hike this trail around the first week of October. From what I can find, at least some of the huts will be closed. Are there winter rooms in every one of them? Because that would be a great option. Your best bet might be to look up the relevant websites, which normally give a brief summary of the respective huts facilities, along with seasonal windows etc. All the best on your trip! Thank you for this blog post; it served as a perfect source of information for a group of us planning to hike out of season mid-October. I had a couple of questions for you, if you would be so kind to answer them:. Would you say that the microspikes are a must-have or a nice-to-have at this time of year? Considering that the huts will be closed and we plan to sleep in the winterraums, was there running water available near the huts or you had to venture far to get some for the night? Hi Ananth, Thanks for the message. Given average conditions for that time of year, I would recommend taking them. No problems with water. Even if you plan on using the winterraums, I would still take along a tent just in case. Have you trekked the zillertal rucksack route already and if you did, which one is better? Stubai or zillertal? Hi Cam, Thank you so very much for writing the detailed accounts and sharing your insights. I benefit greatly from reading them. I retired early 2 years ago to travel and to hike in as many beautiful places as possible. Your website is filled with information treasures for me and I wish to express my gratitude in writing! Best regards. Hi Joe, Thanks very much for the kind words and glad the website has proved helpful. I found this write up fantastic. Concise and very informative. Looks like you just had one set of clothes. What is a winter room? Can you just repeat if every hut is accessible off season? And did you have the quilt as opposed to a sleeping bag? Hi Conor, Thanks for the message. Glad you found the writeup helpful. Yes, I did have a quilt, rather than a sleeping bag on that hike. Best of luck for your trip. Would you be so kind and make advise. During your trip on this trail have you hiked Habicht or Wilder Freiger? I still not sure are these excursions appropraite for hiker? Do I need glacier equipment to reach these peaks? Is it safe part of the glacier or this is only ofr expirienced glacier walkers and in a group of minimum two? Of course I am talking about walking there in the middle of season. Cicerone guide is talking that this are crowded and well beaten trails on the other side on tirol. Thanks for your message. All the best with your research. For all those who was guessing is it possible to hike Wilder Freiger I am back with the answer. You do not cross the glacier on any part of the way. Of course keep it in mind it was end of season with excellent weather so conditions can be different. Thank you for inspiring me Cam! I went to this trail after I have read your report. Amazing trail! Thank you for the information is very helpful Do you know if there is an option that someone will take our belonging from cabin to cabin instead of carrying it in the trail? I had a couple of questions for you, if you would be so kind to answer them: 1. Thank you so much! I enjoyed them both. If I had to pick, I might give a slight edge to Stubai. Thanks so much. Why is that? I was leaning towards zillertal. As mentioned, I had a great time on both of them. Could have gone either way. Hi Cam, Would you be so kind and make advise. Any advises appreciated.
