Over the past three years, 38-year-old San Francisco-based photographer Rachel Lena Esterline has focused her work on strip clubs, photographing over 1,000 strippers at 12 different clubs. Ahead, Esterline's take on her work and her stunning photos of Karen, a performer at the club Hungry I.

In 2014, Rachel Esterline was working in advertising as a commercial stylist when she got an interesting phone call. "A friend called and asked if I’d be down to take photos of strippers," she says. "I was like, 'Duh!' I've never been afraid to take chances in life, and when offered an opportunity to take on a new profession like photography in an arena where no one had access, I couldn’t turn it down."

Since that first photography assignment, Esterline hasn't looked back. "After being initiated into the space, I decided to take it on as a main gig and got comfortable with the camera I was working on," she says. "I immediately felt a connection forming — like I wanted to share [my subjects'] story with the world."
Cosmopolitan.com: Tell me about your relationship with Karen, the subject of this series.
Esterline: Like in every situation in life, establishing trust is challenging and rewarding. Right after I first started [photographing in strip clubs], I met a young woman named Karen who was new to dancing. She was 19, protective and shy, loyal, and had a great sense of humor. We clicked immediately.
Esterline: We’ve grown together. She’s become incredibly confident as a dancer, and I have as a photographer.

Esterline: My relationship with her also gave me the opportunity to re-evaluate my perspective on the industry and embrace the potential of what the images offer Karen, as well as the audience following my work. I release images of sex workers who are empowered.
When asked about her work with Esterline, Karen said, "Rachel's had a major impact on my dancing career. I’m glad I've always had her there to keep my head above water. She’s more than a friend, she’s my sister, and God sent her for me. That’s all I can say."
Esterline: Dancing helps support [Karen] and her family. She believes in a higher power, and trusts there’s a plan for her life.
Esterline: That’s beautiful, I think. The photos we’ve made together offer a candid document of her unrelenting power.
Cosmopolitan.com: What sets a photograph apart for you?
Esterline: Favorite photos for me are based on connection. Sometimes it’s with a particular dancer, or perhaps a time and place.

Cosmopolitan.com: What do you hope people will take away from your photos?
Esterline: Most documentation of strippers and entertainers is predominantly negative. What kills me is how photojournalistic stories and films tend to convey a depraved, desperate woman caught up in drugs and prostitution. I hope my photos help lift the stigma around women like Karen, as well as strippers and adult entertainers at large.

Esterline: I see empowered women, and we as a team operate on that dynamic exchange of power.
Cosmopolitan.com: Given the negative stereotypes around strippers, have you faced challenges in sharing your work?
Esterline: I was recently kicked off Instagram. Thankfully I have friends on the inside, but either way it’s absurd and hurtful that my images are viewed as smut or demeaning.
Esterline: It’s like, Wake up! The female nude has been used in art since the beginning of time.
Esterline: Now [my Instagram is] private and [I] don’t give one fuck about [growing it]. Unless you’re a stripper, porn star, photo editor, or hot boi, you ain’t coming in. My girls are too special.
