Soleil Brotin from Cardiff admitted he was ignorant towards gay people in the past but is now dedicated to reclaiming a historical slur for the community to feel empowered
The weekly email brings you all the latest news from the LGBTQ+ community plus exclusive interviews direct to your inbox
43 year-old Soleil Brotin from Cardiff is a heterosexual man determined to reclaim a historically offensive word back for the LGBT+ community.
According to Soleil, creating ' Fagz.org', the play on the offensive slur, is an attempt to remove power from oppressors.
Although in its infancy, the organisation hopes to serve the LGBT+ community through creating packages for various pride events across the world. An acronym for 'Fabulous and Gay', Soleil feels it's time to take back a historically derogatory term and re-imagine it in a way to celebrate the community.
“It was a scenario where I found myself in, and someone called my friend a ‘dirty black fag’”, Soleil told WalesOnline.
“It was outside WoW, an altercation nearly developed and I said ‘you know what, buddy? The man’s right you are a FAG because you’re fabulous and gay’.
“It completely switched the situation. What was going to be an altercation, I thought I might have conceived something accidentally quite special”.
Working in construction, Soleil was called a 'fag' by colleagues after being spotted leaving a LGBT+ venue with friends.
“As a non-gay person you can’t comprehend what it’s like to be called ‘fag’. I’ve been called a ‘fag’ by association as to opposed to orientation”, he said.
"I’ve been back working in construction for five years and that's a cesspit for homophobia and racism. I want people to see things as I do".
Soleil admitted that he was previously ignorant towards LGBT+ people in his early teenage years, regretting his past actions.
”To be completely honest, I was quite ignorant myself”, he admitted.
“I grew up in Cardiff and there was quite a lot of ignorance towards gay people. It was only when [I met] someone I didn’t know who was gay, a friend of my mother, when I realised what a great person he was and it completely changed my attitude when I was 15.
"I realised how ignorant I was in my early teenage years and since then I have been completely indifferent to people’s sexuality”.
Although in its early stages, 'Fagz.org' has already received notable recognition and interest from brands such as ASOS and Amazon. He has been praised by gay people around the world, and feedback so far has been positive.
”I had a guy from Texas message me out the blue saying he loves my website", he added.
“He said to me once lockdown is over he can’t wait for someone to call him ‘fag’ because he’s going to turn around and say ‘yes I am, I’m fabulous and gay’”.
Hoping to get the ball moving on reclaiming the slur, similar to the use of 'queer' and its reclamation, Soleil wants 'Fagz.org' to play a role in reclaiming a weapon used by people who are oppressing the community.
Over time, Soleil hopes to allow LGBT+ charities to have a space on the webiste where they can advertise their cause for free. He also told WalesOnline that if investment is secured for products, percentage of profits from the sales will be dedicated to various LGBT+ organisations and charities.
“It’s the same thing I want to do with 'Fagz', I want them to take pride and to turn it around as a term of endearment", he said.
“If you take a verbal weapon away from oppressors, for me, it means I’m doing something right. I feel it could be a product and brand that the LGBT+ community could be proud of”.
What do you think about potentially reclaiming the slur in a positive way? Let us know in the comments.
