Storm Watcher Prepares for Severe Thunderstorm

Title: The Storm Watchers

The sky over the small town of Briarwood had been eerily still all afternoon—the kind of quiet that makes the back of your neck prickle. Twelve-year-old Jake Reynolds adjusted the antenna on his weather radio, his eyes glued to the scrolling text on the screen:

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM.

Jake’s heart raced. He had been obsessed with storms ever since he saw a tornado touch down on the edge of town two years ago. Now, with his dad out of town and his mom working late at the hospital, it was up to him to keep an eye on the weather.

His little sister, Mia, poked her head into his room. 'Jake, why do you keep checking that thing? It’s just rain.'

Jake shook his head. 'Not just rain. A watch means the conditions are right for big storms—lightning, hail, maybe even a tornado.'

Mia’s eyes widened. 'Should we hide in the basement?'

'Not yet,' Jake said, grabbing his notebook where he logged every weather alert. 'But we need to be ready.'

Just then, the radio crackled to life with an urgent tone. 'This is the National Weather Service. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Briarwood County. Seek shelter immediately.'

Jake’s stomach dropped. A warning meant the storm was here.

Outside, the wind howled, and the first fat raindrops smacked against the window. The lights flickered once, twice—then went out.

'Basement. Now!' Jake grabbed Mia’s hand and their emergency bag, racing downstairs as thunder shook the house.

For the next hour, they huddled under the stairs, listening to the storm rage above them. Trees cracked, hail pounded the roof, and lightning lit up the small basement windows in flashes of blue-white.

Finally, the winds died down. When they crept back upstairs, they found branches scattered across the yard and their porch swing ripped away—but the house was intact.

Jake let out a shaky breath. The storm had been fierce, but they’d been ready.

Mia grinned up at him. 'You’re kinda like a superhero. A storm watcher.'

Jake laughed. 'Maybe. But next time, let’s hope the weather’s boring.'

As the sun peeked through the retreating clouds, Jake knew one thing for sure: he’d never ignore a Severe Thunderstorm Watch again.
