This is obviously a fantastic collection of Soft Cell - Soft Cell at their early best, including all the essential extended versions.

The packaging is gorgeous. I much prefer the paper sleeves to jewel cases. Yes, you have to take a bit more care of them, but they look like 'proper' albums. Ultimately, 100s of plastic jewel cases are too antiseptic, hard and cold. (And they too aren't invulnerable, the holding teeth break off, cracks and broken hinges.)

Wish the paper sleeves would catch on over here, or at least be more common.
Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball are universally known for their synthpop remake of the mid-60's soul hit "Tainted Love," which dominated dance clubs and eventually entered the mainstream singles charts. In the US, the duo were a one-hit wonder and failed to gain lasting success, but they had a longer career in Europe and Almond even more so once he went solo. "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret", released in the UK in late 1981, contained the ubiquitous "Tainted Love", its follow-up "Bedsitter" and their third single, "Say Hello Wave Goodbye". Extending the preoccupations of "Tainted Love", this was a conceptual album about sex from a low-rent, sleazy standpoint. Songs such as the brazen "Sex Dwarf", kinky "Seedy Films", rakish "Entertain Me" and suggestive "Secret Life" expanded upon the overarching eroticism, S&M motif and omnipresent debauchery. However, Almond's disconsolate vocals and Ball's chilling electronics temper the overall aberrance to such a degree that even though the album was designed to be played at a burlesque show, it never feels offensive. For the most part, British listeners were astute enough to discern that Almond was harking back to his shock value performance art shows and Ball providing the weird, bleepy backdrop, but the singles originating from the album - "Tainted Love", "Bedsitter" and "Say Hello Wave Goodbye" - were decidedly less deviant, which goes some way to explaining why the duo received mainstream exposure. If they had released "Sex Dwarf" as the lead single, no radio station would have played it and the album would have sank without a trace. It appeared that the album's lewd, tongue-in-cheek tone was not what people expected from them after hearing that aforementioned cover version, and they struggled to regain their initial critical and commercial popularity, even releasing a remix album, extended video and re-recordings of their biggest hits in 1991 in an attempt to revive their flagging careers. It worked at the time and "Tainted Love" re-entered the charts, but since 1991, Soft Cell are, as with most unorthodox synthpop acts apart from Pet Shop Boys, known for their plaintively sung mega-hit rather than this masterfully contrived, conceived and executed album, which should be reappraised for its boundless merits.

"Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret" is an immersive, consistently amusing and remarkable listen. It may not be as scandalous as it once was in terms of its deep dive into the nocturnal Soho scene, but the album remains a unique, eccentric template of dance beats and degeneracy, and when one understands the imagery as being artistic rather than sexual, the neon-lit flamboyance and murkiness of it all becomes even more appealing and irreverent. It is a great album that should not have received such mixed reviews upon its release, though it has since gone on to be recognised as one of the more audacious, exciting and underrated records of the 1980s. And it is a bold work, but one that demands to be heard in its entirety for maximum enjoyment rather than just to hear the overplayed material. "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret" is Soft Cell's definitive record, one that, due to its high quality, could not be equalled.

A groundbreaking, moody, party of an album. Marc and Dave were and still are ahead of their time! Any word on how this reissue sounds? Probably my favorite album of all time!
