CHICAGO — Former Chicago Bears legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve 'Mongo' McMichael has been hospitalized as he continues his years-long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his family confirmed Tuesday.

The 66-year-old Super Bowl XX champion was admitted to a Chicago-area hospital due to complications from the progressive neurodegenerative disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. McMichael was diagnosed with ALS in 2021 and has since faced significant physical decline, losing his ability to speak and move independently.

The two-time First-Team All-Pro defensive tackle recorded 95 career sacks and was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this year as part of the 2024 class.
