It’s surprisingly simple to start posting your first auction on eBay. This is what you should do.

Step 1: Open an eBay seller account.

If you’ve bought things on eBay, then you already have an account: just log in and click ‘Sell’ in the toolbar at the top of the page, then click ‘Create a seller account’.

If you have never used eBay before, you will first need to open an account using the ‘sign up’ link under the toolbar and then click ‘Sell’ and ‘Create a seller account’.

The eBay site will guide you through the process. For security, this may involve giving card details and bank information.

Step 2: Decide what to sell.

For your first little experiment with eBay, it really doesn’t matter what you sell. Look around the room you are in; I’m sure there’s something in there that you’re not so attached to that you could put in the post. Small books and CDs are ideal first items.

Step 3: Submit your article.

Click on ‘Sell’ and you are ready to publish your item.

The first thing to do is choose a category; it’s best to write down what item it is and let eBay choose for you. Next, write a title and description.

Include keywords that you think people will search for in the title box and as much information as you have about the item in the description box.

Now set a starting price. $0.01 is the best starting price, as it entices people to bid who otherwise wouldn’t, and items will almost never end up that low. The next thing to set is the duration of the auction: 3, 5, 7 or 10 days.

This is up to you: longer sales will usually get more deals, but they will also seem to go on forever. If you’ve taken a photo, add it now – items with photos always sell for more.

Finally, check off the payment methods you’ll accept (PayPal only is best for now) and where you’ll post (limit to your own country to start with). Submit and done!

Step 4: Wait for it to sell.

This is just a matter of sitting back and letting eBay do its thing – buyers will find your item and leave bids on it. Some bidders may email you with questions about the item, and you should do your best to answer these questions as quickly as possible.

Remember that if your item doesn’t sell, you can relist it for free.

Step 5: Collect payment and post it.

eBay will send emails to your buyer guiding them through the process of shipping and paying for the item. Make sure you have the money before you send anything.

Once you’ve received payment, all you need to do is pack the item up for shipping (be sure to use bubble wrap), take the buyer’s address from the confirmation email eBay sent you, and write it on the package. Put some stamps on it, post it and voila!

Being a salesperson is a big responsibility, and sometimes you can feel like you’re not doing everything you should. This simple checklist will help you stay on top of everything.

Have you found out everything you can about your articles? Try typing their names into a search engine; you may discover something you didn’t know.

If someone else is selling the same thing as you, always try to provide more information about it than they are.

Do you monitor the competition? Always keep an eye on how much other items the same or similar to yours are selling for and at what prices they are being offered. Generally, it doesn’t make much sense to start a fixed price auction for $100 when someone else is selling the item for $90.

Do you have photos of the items? It’s worth taking the time to photograph your items, especially if you have a digital camera. If you’re serious about eBay but don’t own a camera, then you’ll probably want to invest in one at some point.

Are you sending emails to your sellers? It pays to send a short email when transactions are made: something like a simple “Thank you for purchasing my item, please let me know when you have sent payment”.

Follow this with “Thank you for your payment, I have published your [article name] today”. You’ll be surprised how many problems you’ll avoid simply by communicating this way.

Also, are you checking your emails? Remember that potential buyers can email you about anything at any time, and not responding to these emails will only make them go elsewhere instead of buying from you.

Do your item description pages have everything buyers need to know? If you plan to offer international delivery, then it’s good to list the charges to different counties and display it at each auction.

If you have any special terms and conditions (for example, if you are refunding any item as long as it hasn’t been opened), you should make sure those are displayed as well.

Have you been wrapping your items correctly? Your packaging needs to be professional to get the best impression: use appropriately sized envelopes or packages, wrap the item in bubble wrap to prevent damage, and print labels instead of handwriting addresses. Oh, and always use first class mail, don’t be cheap.

Do you follow up? It pays to send an email a few days after posting an item, saying “Is everything okay with your purchase? I hope you received it and it was as you expected.”

This may sound like giving the customer a chance to complain, but you should try to help your customers, not take their money and run.

Being a good eBay seller, more than anything else, is about providing really good and honest customer service. That is the only foolproof way to protect your reputation.

Of course, by now you may be wondering if getting a good reputation on eBay is really worth all the trouble. People won’t buy from you anyway, and couldn’t you just open a new account if that’s really what it’s all about? Our next email will clarify that.

How Much Is Your eBay Reputation Really Worth?

Your reputation on eBay is everything you are on eBay; without it, you are nothing. Your reputation is worth as much as every sale you make.

If you’ve ever bought something on eBay (and you most likely have), think about your own behavior. Buying from a seller with a low feedback rating makes you feel a little nervous and insecure, while buying from a PowerSeller with a reputation of thousands requires no thought or fear – it feels like buying from a store.

A bad reputation will make you lose sales.

In fact, a bad reputation will cause you to lose almost all of your sales. If someone leaves you a negative comment, you’ll feel the pain right away, as that rating will go right to the top of your user page for everyone to see.

Who is going to want to do business with you when they just read that you “took a month to deliver the item” or that you had “miscommunication and shipped a damaged item”? The answer is nobody.

Your next articles will need to be very cheap stuff, just to push that negative down the page. You may have to spend days or even weeks selling cheap stuff to get enough positive feedback for someone to deal with you again.

It’s even worse if you constantly allow buyers to leave negative feedback: once you get positive ratings below 90%, you’re better off being invisible.

You can’t just open a new account.

Besides eBay’s rules about having only one account, there are a lot more downsides to getting a new account than that. You literally have to start all over again from scratch.

You will not be able to use all the different features of eBay. Your existing customers will no longer be able to find you. Your auctions will end at a lower price due to your low feedback rating.

Opening a new account is like moving to a new city to get away from some people who are spreading rumors about you: it’s throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

A good reputation will give you sales.

When a PowerSeller tells me something, I tend to believe them. They may be selling a pretty unlikely item, but if they guarantee that it is what they say it is, then I trust them; after all, they are not going to risk their reputation. This is the power of a reputation: people know that you want to maintain it, and they know that you will do whatever it takes to achieve it.

This is true even to the point where I would rather buy something for $20 from a seller I know I can trust than $15 from someone with average reviews.

It’s worth the extra money to feel like the seller knows what they’re doing, has all their systems in place, and will get the item to me quickly and efficiently.

You’ll really find selling on eBay much easier, and there’s only one way to build a good reputation: make sure you please your customers at all times. But some customers can be, well, a little hard to please. In the following email, we ask: is the eBay customer always right?

I can answer this question for you right now: the answer is ‘yes’. In fact, the answer is ‘YES!’ – the biggest yes you have ever heard. Of course, the customer is always right.

If you want to be a successful eBay seller, you have to put in a lot of effort to make sure every one of your customers is 100% satisfied, no matter how much time or money it costs you.

Item was damaged in the mail – you should offer to replace or return it for a refund without hesitation.

They say item doesn’t match description – Resist the urge to email back with “yes it does, you just didn’t read the description correctly”. Please return the item for a refund and edit your description if necessary to make any confusing points clearer.

I’m sure you’re already detecting a pattern. Offering a refund will make almost any problem go away, and it will actually cost you less in the long run. Remember, one piece of negative feedback will stay with you forever, while having a 100% positive rating is like owning a bar of solid gold.

You should always handle customer complaints before they complain on eBay; in fact, you should preemptively email them to ask if they have any. Going through the dispute process is time consuming, reflects poorly on you, and is frankly unnecessary.

Still not convinced? Do you think this would only work on cheap items? Well, you see, the higher the price of the items you sell, the more your reputation is worth to you.

Let’s say you were selling $10,000 worth of items each week, for example, and making a profit of $1,000 per week overall. You might think that refunding a customer’s $1,000 purchase would be a tragedy, losing all of your profit for the week.

It’s much better to look at it this way: If you don’t give that refund, then not only will you lose next week’s earnings, but you’ll probably lose a few weeks’ earnings after that as well. Now, which option looks better?

I absolutely cannot stress enough the importance of truly believing that the customer is always right. But trying to make excuses for complaints isn’t the only thing to avoid.

There are many pitfalls to avoid if you don’t want to end your business before it’s really started, and I’ll show you what they are in the next email.

It’s surprisingly easy to wipe out your eBay business if you’re not careful. Sure, you can start from scratch at no cost, but do you really want to? Still, if you want your business to end up dead in the water, here are some simple ways to do it.

Lying about an article: Saying it works well when sometimes it doesn’t. Say it’s in perfect condition when it has a scratch. Your customers will hate you!

Post When You Want – Make sure to leave your customers hanging around, wondering when your article will appear. This ensures that they buy from someone else the next time.

Let items end at any time: Few people will be around to care about your auction if it ends in the middle of the night. Why bother to find out if the auctions will end at a good time?

Don’t bother with email – customers are just a waste of time anyway. eBay businesses are supposed to run themselves! Never give informed answers to questions about your article.

Selling Junk: It’s really just eBay. You can sell any old tattoo on the market for a 200% profit. Let quality be someone else’s concern. I mean, really, what do you expect for that price?

Refuse to give discounts: you know how much your items cost, you know what your markup will be, and you’re not going to negotiate. Remember that offering special deals to customers can make them feel good and come back to you.

Make your listings ugly – as many colors, flashing lights, and animations as possible will really give those customers a headache. Write both in CAPITAL LETTERS! As you can. Preferably large, red caps. Make sure to use Impact and Comic Sans fonts. For an extra special touch, see if you can find a way to add some music.
