To be born is to exist, but to live is something else entirely. Stephanie Brown falls apart, and pulls herself back together. OR Stephanie Brown is assigned a different name and gender at birth. These are the changes that result.

The funeral is a small, silent affair.

It matches the casket buried six feet deep.
Someone didn't go to Tim's funeral. Steph wants to know why.
“I think I might be gay.” Steph choked out.
“Oh,” Barbara said. “Well, that’s okay. You’re beautiful just the way you-”
A tear slipped rolled down her face. “I don’t want to be.”
Steph faces a serial killer, her country, and herself.
"You're Robin", Bruce spoke as though it was as simple as that.
"I might be Robin, but you're not my father"
Or, being betrayed by one father was more than enough for Stephanie, she didn't need a second one to let her down

Dick Grayson has never had much time for Stephanie Brown. But when the two of them find themselves stranded without a line to the outside world, he finds that they might have more in common than he thought.
Stephanie is Jason's best friend. She's about to discover that she's Robin's, too.
After Jason digs his way out of his grave, he lives a broken existence in the city unable (and unwilling) to remember his life before . That changes one night when he sees Robin flying overhead and follows her home.

Red Hood's been running Robin's Nest, a secret youth shelter in Gotham, since he came out of his murdery craze. He wants it to be a place to stay, no questions asked, with a hot meal provided if you stick around for breakfast. The kids of Gotham deserve that much.
Enter Stephanie, whose new name isn't the only secret she's keeping.
(or: how steph outsmarts her dad, makes gay friends, and gets the guy)
She presses her crayon to the page one last time, adding the final finishing touch. The darkness of the cabinet casts shadows on the drawing, bringing it to life. She stares down at two bright eyes hiding in a swirl of fabric and blackness. The newspaper she’s referencing only has one blurry photo of the phenomenon, but there’s no mistaking the drawing for anything else.
Steph leans back, laying her head against the back of the cabinet to dream of the Batman finally coming to carry her away.
Or: Stephanie Brown is going to be a hero. No matter what it takes to get there.
When Stephanie Brown lands the position of a lifetime as Tim Drake-Wayne’s bodyguard, she expects a straightforward, if exhausting, job. For the most part, she’s correct, but when she meets his mysterious sister, Cassandra Wayne, Steph falls head over heels in an instant, and Cass seems like she’s falling for her, too. In her fight to keep her deeply-buried past a secret, and her burgeoning relationship from becoming a conflict of interest, Steph soon discovers there’s a lot more to Cass and the Wayne family than she ever thought possible.
The guy gave her a lopsided smile, “I think everyone around this area has, ah, been hit by Cluemaster. Nice to know someone’s looking out for us. A smart one, too.”
“It comes with the job. You know how it is.” She gestured to her bloody outfit.
“That’s the Cluemaster’s arch nemesis for ya!” And he chuckled as he walked off, presumably to get her a plate of waffles.
Steph notices the new kid because he's constantly trying to be unnoticeable. He's pale and drawn, doesn't talk much, and never ever smiles. He's also a wicked genius. Forget gathering data, Steph’s new goal is to unlock best friend status.
[Tim hits a button, and Steph can hear audio suddenly playing from Baseball Jerk’s computer across the room. There are loud moans and gross squelching noises as Jerk frantically tries to shut it off. “Is that porn?” Steph whispers with delighted scandal. The class erupts into laughter as their teacher turns beet red with either rage or secondhand mortification. Maybe both.
Tim pulls back and looks away from her wide grin, but his lips seem to twitch a little in amusement and pink dusts his skin in the face of her admiration. “Simple,” he says with a mischievous slant to his eyebrows. “He already had it open incognito.”]
Three months into their apprentice friend partner ship, Spoiler tells Robin a secret.
Steph sat down at the edge of the building and watched the city under her. It was almost dawn, she could already hear the sound of car horns and people swearing at each other on the way to work.
The blood on her suit had almost dried off, but the metallic smell was still present.
---- Bad things happen on patrol and Stephanie is having a hard time.
"Stephanie, what are you doing out here?" He sounded genuinely confused.
Take a fucking guess, she snorted mentally, as if he hasn't dreamt of this moment from the get-go.
"Are you...going somewhere?" He asked cautiously, as though he were worried that she'd send him packing with a batarang to the leg if he made one wrong move.
"Yeah", she answered shortly, "I'm going back home"
Or, Stephanie knows she's always been on the fringes of the Batfamily- a part of their shenanigans, sure, but not quite a part of their nucleus. Bruce is there to prove her wrong.
Joining the Justice League is arguably one of the best things the Batman of Earth-0 ever did, that world is more forgiving than this one, in that world people come back, death is not the end.
On this world Batman never joins the League, never learns to trust more than himself, maintains the icy demeanor that manages to ice out almost everyone he knows, and eventually Dick Grayson leaves.
This is Dick Grayson's story, Stephanie Brown's story, how they left Gotham behind, how they learnt what it meant to be a hero and not just a backyard vigilante.
"You're Robin", Bruce spoke as though it was as simple as that.

College was hard, but Steph was going to graduate with honors.
Kon raised his eyebrows and twisted at his hoop earring. “Graffiti? Huh, I’m dating a whacko city girl who wants to defile my small town charm.” That earned him a smack to his shoulder and Kon giggled and moved to grab her wrist, pressing a kiss to the back of her hand. When he glanced up, Stephanie was practically glowing pink in the night and it made Kon grin even wider at her.
“Shut up.” Steph sniffed and snatched her hand away, her cheeks still tinted pink. “Anyways, do you want to or not?”
Kon shrugged his shoulders and leaned against the fence. “It’s a rite of passage, Steph. If we don’t do this then who are we to call ourselves young, teenage lovers?”
After arriving in the 20th Century, Bart Allen and his new father-figure-slash-guardian Max Mercury move to Manchester, New Jersey. Soon after, he meets Manchester's (a suburb of Gotham City) new vigilante... the Spoiler.

Dick did a little forehead wrinkle that, in Stephanie’s professional opinion as a bat, looked too adorably clueless for him to pass as Batman at the moment, despite being in the suit. “Right. I know what the FAFSA is. But why are you filling it out?”

Could…Dick be secretly dumb? Like, she knew he wasn’t the World’s Greatest Detective, or even the World’s Second Greatest Detective (an honor belonging to her ex), but she had pretty much assumed he was the Third.

Or: Stephanie is applying to colleges. Who knew that Bruce's emotional incompetence could make the process more tricky even when he's not there. Dick attempts to help out.
"Batman told me not to take food from strangers." He repeated loyally, not even looking at the plate as his stomach growled. Stephanie snorted.
"Batman isn't here, birdy." She teased, then bit her lip. Ok, so maybe she does sound a bit like a rouge. She can hear it, now that Tim pointed it out.
"He will be." Dick claimed, not even a crumb of doubt in his voice. "Batman is going to find me because I trust him, like he trusts me not to break the rules."
Tim snorted, this time. "You're Robin. If you aren't breaking Batman's rules and keeping him on his toes, what are you doing?"
Dick's face twitched, in the way that meant he was rolling his eyes, and he exaggerated the gesture by rolling his head with it. "Those are for his stupid rules that don't make sense. Like trying to bench me for no reason, or telling me not to microwave cereal." -- or; Steph and Tim get stranded in the past, and Steph comes across a lost and delirious little bird. Literally what else is there to do but kidnap him.
Jason Todd thought he was ready for anything when he headed to Titans Tower to have a talk with Robin. He was not ready for Stephanie Brown.
When collecting her mother from a surprise shift at Gotham Mercy, Stephanie Brown stumbles on a mysterious John Doe and resolves to find out exactly who buried this kid and why.

Stephanie Brown had been trying to make her way back to Gotham from the Horn of Africa, when she stumbles on a magic ritual being disrupted by a figure in a red helmet.
When the ritual goes awry, Spoiler finds herself in another world, in another time, staring down the Joker as he's captured Jason Todd.
Suffice to say, she's a long way from home; but a least Young Justice make for good company.
