A 35-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to 10 months in prison for repeatedly filming his teenage stepdaughter while she was bathing in their home, Wales Online reports.
On Nov. 27, 2018, 17-year-old Lauren Brightwood was taking a bath when she noticed a phone above the bathroom door. Upon further inspection, Brightwood—who was one day shy of 18—realized the phone belonged to her stepfather, Thomas Craig Lewis.
Horrified, Brightwood texted her mom, Michelle, and told her to come to the bathroom without telling Lewis. When confronted by Michelle, Lewis first said he thought he heard Brightwood crying, but he later admitted he was “curious” to see how she looked as an adult. He confessed he had recorded Brightwood “a couple of times” in the family’s current and previous homes.
That turned out to be a bit of an understatement, as the Tuesday crowd at Northampton Crown Court learned that Lewis had taken five to 10 videos of Brightwood between the ages of 14 and 17, per Wales Online.
In a victim impact statement she read to the court, Brightwood said Lewis’ actions left her feeling “suicidal” and that she now struggles with anxiety and depression.
“I began drinking more than I should have,” Brightwood said. “I just wanted to get out of the house. I would go anywhere just to get away.”
“I am anxious when entering bathrooms as I don’t want something to happen to me again,” she added. “I don’t think this is fair.”
Lewis’ attorney said his client had previously sought professional help and pleaded guilty to two counts of voyeurism, but Judge Rebecca Crane still handed him a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months. She also ordered him to complete 30 days of rehabilitation and 100 hours of unpaid work.
Brightwood, now 20, has appeared to use her trauma as motivation to help others overcome tragedy in their own lives. She has dedicated her Instagram account to mental health discussion and education, and earlier this year she uploaded a pair of YouTube videos discussing grief, loss, and anxiety.

THIS is the shocking video which claims to expose a stepdad who cheated on his wife with a teenager... but the clip may not be as it seems.
The footage, uploaded to YouTube channel To Catch a Cheater , claims to show a 48-year-old stepdad being caught out after he is hit on by an 18-year-old girl.
Stepdaughter Christina wanted to set up an elaborate honeytrap using her friend Tara, who came up to greet Christina's stepdad with a hidden camera rolling.
Having greeted the stepdad with a friendly: "Hi Mr Peters", the two embrace and start chatting.
Meanwhile, Christina is watching the entire scene unfold, with no idea what is going to happen next.
When the sordid stepdad mentions he had to cut his gym session short to pick Christina up, Tara gives his muscles a flirty - and flattering - squeeze.
The teenager goes on to make a reference to being "legal" now she has turned 18, and invites the stepdad to come to her party to celebrate.
After being told Christina can't make it, he asks: "Are there going to be any other parents, or grown-ups there?"
Birthday girl Tara replies: "Well, not parents. But we're mature", prompting the stepdad to accept her invitation and ask what she wants to mark the occasion.
Christina watches on in amazement as flirty Tara says: "I mean your presence is enough. Icing on the cake would be dinner before".
A shocked Christina can't stop cringing as her 48-year-old stepdad agrees to take her teenage friend out for dinner, before Tara confesses that she's always had a crush on him.
The audio temporarily cuts out as the stepdad can be seen fidgeting on the spot, before confessing that the feeling is mutual.
He adds: "I mean I'm in a situation where, I'm, you know, I'm married and you're, you know, my daughter's friend... socially it's a bit awkward".
Christina is stunned, however, when Tara asks her stepdad if they can hang out, and he suggests a day when he'll be home alone with his wife and stepdaughter out of the house.
The seedy stepdad tries to justify himself, saying meekly: "It's an important thing for people my age to mentor younger people.
"You can come by and do what feels right, what feels natural."
As Tara goes in to peck him on the cheek, Christina leaps out of her chair and slams the laptop shut, shouting: "I don't wanna watch it".
In a bizarre end to the clip, Christina calls up Tara and the pair have an argument down the phone... which viewers are certain is staged.
In fact, some viewers suggested the entire clip may be an elaborate fake, with one saying: "Where do they find these actors? This one is terrible".
Another less-than-impressed viewer took to the comments section to say: "I feel like the episodes are getting fake now".
