A man who Fairfax County, Virginia, police said fatally shot his stepdaughter’s boyfriend during an argument last month is now in custody.
Fairfax County police got a tip Friday morning on where Terence Butler, 40, of Alexandria, may be found in D.C., officials said in a news conference Friday.
Butler is accused of shooting Raphael Pierce, 23, following an argument on Aug. 7 in an apartment in the 7400 block of Vernon Square in the Hybla Valley area.
Police said that Butler held a gathering in the apartment, and he and Pierce got into an argument that escalated into gunfire. Butler fled in a vehicle after firing a single shot that struck Pierce in his upper body, police said.
Butler is being held in D.C. and is awaiting extradition to Fairfax County, where he is facing charges of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
This was the county’s 15th homicide to date, and police Chief Kevin Davis said during the news conference Friday that the department has closed 14 of 18 homicides in 2021.
Maj. Ed O’Carroll, with Fairfax County police, said the community needs to talk more about working through challenges.
“Families need to discuss when arguments and things of this nature start. It should not, shall not, resort to physical violence,” O’Carroll said.
Davis noted the lack of conflict resolution skills in society generally, particularly among families.
“There’s often a crisis. The crisis is resolved with access to a firearm and gunfire, murder. The inability to resolve simple conflict is certainly something that we’re grappling with in 2021,” Davis said.
Davis called on the community not to turn a blind eye and call for help if they see conflict brewing in their neighborhood.

I met my step-daughters boyfriend yesterday.
Post about anything related to family! This can be questions, stories, and comparisons on families. We all have different views and opinions this is just a place to share the ones we have on family. If you have question to ask, a story to tell, or a statement to make about family feel free to post.
Had to share this. My Step-daughter introduced me to her boyfriend yesterday. He's a really nice young man, personable and outgoing, great sense of humour. My wife has known him for years, and adores him. They make a lovely couple.
At the end of the night, my Step-daughter said to me that she was glad that I'd finally got to meet him, because she knew that we would get on well, as she felt that he and I were so very much alike in our interests and temperament. She actually said that her new boyfriend was a lot like me.
I had a few quiet moments when she said that.
It's a great reminder that who you are as a man defines the sort of man that your children will let in to their lives as well.
I will have to tell her how much that meant to me for her to say that, it just might take a while before I can do that without tearing up.
That is SO sweet. Clearly, you are and have been a huge blessing in her life!
Awwww this makes me so happy. She is so lucky to have you in her life and clearly looks up to you. I love my step dad. Need to think of present ideas for my stepdad for fathers day next week.
I thought that were true too, that young ladies would want a good man like their dad/stepdad if they were good, honest, kind and well rounded men. I lived next door to a family with three daughters. Watched them grow up. They had a nice responsible father. They each wound up with the worst boyfriends and husband. Had kids, then became single. All three guys were jerks and didn’t want the responsibility of being dads. I couldn’t understand how they chose men who were clearly opposite of their father when he was a decent example of what a responsible loving father should be. I’m glad that you were able to show your step daughter how to treat women and for her to expect and accept the best from a guy.
Respectfully, you also didn't live in their household. It's really hard to know what goes on behind closed doors, and what influences them other than their dad.
Nice sentiment, but women typically date men like their fathers whether they were good or bad. Also, you don’t know the true relationship between the women you described and their parents or the psychological development the women underwent as children, so it’s best not to speculate.

Good on you. She’s lucky to have you, and I’m sure you’re lucky to have her.
With all the shot in the world it is nice to hear of positive influences.
That’s so nice to hear wow. I hope everything goes well in their relationship!
I am very happy your step-sister us fortunate enough to be dating such a great man.
Teared up reading this. She is lucky to have a caring step-father.
As a 21 year old daughter, I love your story. I hope my Dad feels the same way when he gets to know my boyfriend a little more. Beautiful story!
Never been to this sub before. What a great post and congrats, Mr Bonus Dad.
That’s awesome dude. Even if it doesn’t work out with them, it has to be a wonderful feeling knowing that not just your daughter, but your STEP-DAUGHTER thinks so highly of you. That’s pretty rare man. Keep doing a great job as a father. It’s not going unnoticed.
Hey man, thanks for making me cry. I’m so glad people like you were out there for girls and their boyfriends.
I dated a man the was really like my dad. But I married the one that is like my stepdad. Best decision ever! 🥰
You're a lucky Dad! It's rare that a young woman knows exactly which traits SHE believes are important, she values her familes values and morals Enjoy that talk with your daughter 😭

When I fell in love after five years on my own as a single mother, I was elated. I could not have been happier to marry the man of my dreams, a year after we first met.
And yet tellingly, when I was sharing my good fortune with girlfriends, I always told them that while it was wonderful, it wasn't a fairy tale.
My husband, Andrew Wallas, a psychotherapist, was 56 and married to someone else when I met him 3½ years ago.
I was 43, with an eight-year-old daughter from a previous relationship; he had three daughters ranging in age from late teens to early 20s. While we realised weeks after meeting that we had most definitely fallen in love, we knew we would face considerable challenges blending our domestic lives.
Settled into her role: Anna, pictured with husband Andrew, hasn't found it easy being a second wife
Still, we kept saying to each other, with deluded back-slapping pride, it felt like we'd jumped off a cliff together. What I hadn't realised, in my excitement, was just how demanding or complex becoming a second wife would be.
For the first 18 months of our relationship, our blissful highs were punctuated by damning lows, raging arguments and periods of hyper-insecurity. I hadn't envisaged I'd have to navigate such lonely and inhospitable terrain.
After more than two years, I now have a special empathy for other second wives. It's like a taboo club, particularly if you're struggling to unite two families.
When you meet another member, there is an imperceptible sigh of relief, knowing that they relate only too well to what you are going through.
Whenever he spoke to his daughters on the phone, he would adopt an ingratiatingly sugary voice
Mine and Andrew's problems, I think, stemmed from our different family backgrounds and attitudes.
As a Left-leaning liberal, he didn't place great importance on education, and had had never once encouraged his children to do their homework or even read a school report. His former marital home was chaotic and untidy.
I, meanwhile, was an unashamedly Stalinist single mother, who believed in firm boundaries, discipline and tough love. As the daughter of an Oxford academic, education ranks highly among my list of parenting priorities. Equally, I am a preternatural neat-freak and unbearably houseproud.
Our different parenting styles became our premier battleground. I couldn't believe that it didn't matter to him if his daughters went to university - or even got a job.
Worse, Andrew would over-compensate whenever he saw or spoke to them. I soon realised this is common among men who've left the marital home to begin a new relationship.
Strict: Anna, pictured with her daughter Daisy as a baby, struggled with Andrew's different parenting techniques
Some days they are so buckled over with guilt about choosing their own happiness at the expense of their children's security, that they can become over-placatory and - often in the eyes of the second wife - weak.
I remember staring at Andrew, open-mouthed, the first time we had lunch with his youngest daughter, then 16, six months into our relationship. (To this day, the two older children have refused to meet me. I have some sympathy with this; they felt we got married too quickly.)
As we sat in a vegetarian restaurant in Brighton, I simply couldn't believe his alien, dopey smile and forced Father Christmas jollity. I'd never seen this unctuous man before and I was, frankly, stunned.
I developed this ghastly insecurity and sexual jealousy towards his first wife, obsessing about the 20 years they'd spent together
Similarly, for the first year, whenever he spoke to his daughters on the phone, he would adopt an ingratiatingly sugary voice I'd never heard him use with anyone else. He's endlessly patient with them, never rising to anger. Yet in the rough and tumble of our domestic life, he will shout at me, eyes cold with fury.
On the plus side, he's always been wonderfully inclusive with my daughter. I did not introduce them until we were engaged, four months into our relationship, so she, like Andrew's daughters, had to accept our marriage as a
