t's her first day in town. Things are so hard right now. Money is tight, anxiety is high. But SO is falling apart in the kitchen crying and shit while I am trying to be honest-yet-protective with stepdaughter when the subject of money came up. We're just broke right now, that's all. Tough but not a disaster. So, we all had potatoes for breakfast and split the one egg between the girls. But this kid. This fucking kid right here:
"I'm glad I'm not at my mom's any more. She sleeps in 'til 11 every day that she's not working, but I wake up at 7:45."(Proceeded to thank dad three times for making breakfast and raved about the egg, which she pulled out of the coop herself, she loved it!)
"I'm glad daddy met you, because you're nice. You're a good mom to [baby sister], too." OMG onions.
"I love [baby sister] so much... she's so bouncy and fun! Just like you!" Aaaaand I'm crying.
She is 7. Totally in love with the baby and never shown a drop of jealousy. Life at her mom's house is kinda lonely, I was the last kid in the house with a single mom, too, so I relate. I always get so stressed before she visits, and it's totally dumb. Her father has totally broken me and I'm at the point of wondering (daily) if I want to stick around or not but... this kid is awesome.
Reading the title, I thought this would go the other way. Glad she is so happy and positive about being there. She sounds very sweet!

Please be aware though that she might be suffering inside and feel like she HAS to put on a good show to stop things from falling apart completely. My sister was the worrying type. At six or seven she would have said all kinda of shit like that that felt good, but it really only betrays a ton of fear and anxiety underneath. If you guys aren't dealing with feelings in mature, non-emotional ways she probably felt compelled to be the adult and fix the situation in whatever ways she could.
Be super kind, be super gentle with your words, and don't give in too much to the negativity. I mean to baby and the girl and your SO.

Funny you mention anxiety - SHe does have that problem, but in interacting with her this morning I could see that she is just so happy to be here. So happy to be having a regular family breakfast that she kind of let something slip about about the situation at her mom's house, which is a lot different. We actually had a decent talk about how she's pretty lonely at home, her mom often chooses to do other things even when they COULD be spending time together, and she's catching on to that. But when she says stuff like, "I'm glad I'm not at mom's anymore," I try to get her to elaborate, not just let that go.
Marriage is so much harder when you're broke. It helps when you have understanding, appreciative kids around.
Yes. My husband and I went through two years of utter hell with each other, and while money wasn't the only factor, it was a big one. These days we're not any less broke, but we fixed a lot of the other shit wrong in our relationship and learned to work with it. I learned to spend less money (mostly), he learned to stop being a controlling ass (mostly)...it's still tough but we're solid.
Having two totally kick-ass kids really does help.
Seriously. When we met she was 4 and still pretty bratty. But she has loved me since day one and now seeing her with the baby, I just. I get verklempt!

Things are ALWAYS better when she's in town - he sleeps better and he is happier and we argue less. So there is that.
Awww that's great! I haven't been around many kids that age, but she seems mature for 7! Just goes to show that money isn't everything.
Thank you! She is at that age where she realizes that praise feels good and complimenting people makes them feel good. She used to be the type who would blurt out the most blunt (and hurtful) things, but she's learning how to be more loving with her words. It's great!
:D I am determined to be good to her. I disliked her a bit at first but she is growing up to be so caring and patient. She read "A WOcket in My Pocket" to the baby while I was folding laundry! Two kids is soooo much better than one sometimes!
As somebody who spent 6 years with an abusive twat of a step mom, thank you for breaking that stereotype. You sound like you treat her well and she's so lucky to have you!

I didn't like her (behavior) at first, and then one day I realized --- I'm the one invading her world, her one-on-one dad time, and I should be thanking her for wanting me in their lives. She is such a peach!
Thank you! Husband's brother married a woman who turned out to be an Evil Stepmother, and niece eventually said something like, "I know you want me to like her, dad, but I think Liz was the wrong choice." I would be heartbroken if my stepdaughter felt that way about me! She's so loving and she flat out adores the baby!
Sounds like she was exactly what you needed! I hope things work out between you and her father, but hey, do what's best for you.
