Photo credit: Lucasfilm From Esquire At two hours and 32 minutes, The Last Jedi was already an incredibly long Star Wars movie. And it could have been much longer, had director Rian Johnson kept a number of the deleted scenes that will be included in the upcoming Last Jedi Blu-ray. As Entertainment Weekly reports , one of these included Luke learning of Hans death and retreating to his hut to grieve. In the scene, it cuts to Leia in a similar pose - the two siblings sharing a connection from across the galaxy. “It’s both of them having the connection, and that also then led you to think that Leia was thinking about Han’s death,” Johnson tells Entertainment Weekly . “It was a really lovely moment.” But, in the end, they decided to cut it. “We realized just for pacing in that section we had to stick with Rey and Luke, and we wanted just to go straight from him slamming the door of the hut into the day-in-the-life montage, of him going around the island, Johnson said. Taking that bit out suddenly propelled us forward into that segment in a way that just felt much better for the film.” Which is unfortunate, because it would have provided another touching scene with Leia - one that would have turned out to be among her last. “I was very sorry to lose it. I think it’s a beautiful performance from Mark Hamill,” Johnson says. “But I think that we get a similar beat with him, later when he’s in the Falcon with R2.” Its true: The Falcon scene was one of the best in then film, but damn, it would have been great to get every final Luke and Leia moment possible. At least we can enjoy it when the Blu-ray is out on March 27.
