Stellantis Announces Major Layoffs Amid Shift to Electric Vehicles

Detroit, MI – April 4, 2025 – Stellantis, the global automaker behind brands like Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler, has announced significant layoffs affecting thousands of employees across North America and Europe. The company cites cost-cutting measures and the accelerating transition to electric vehicle (EV) production as key reasons for the restructuring.

According to an internal memo, Stellantis plans to cut approximately 6,500 jobs over the next year, with the majority of reductions impacting manufacturing and engineering roles. Facilities in Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois are expected to be hardest hit, alongside several plants in Italy and France.

CEO Carlos Tavares stated, 'These difficult decisions are necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of Stellantis as we realign our workforce to meet the demands of an electrified automotive future.' The company has pledged to offer severance packages and retraining programs for affected employees.

Industry-Wide Challenges

The move follows similar workforce reductions by competitors like Ford and General Motors, as automakers grapple with slowing demand for traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and heavy investments in EV technology. Stellantis has committed to 100% electric sales in Europe and 50% in the U.S. by 2030, requiring massive retooling of factories and supply chains.

Union and Political Reactions

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has expressed frustration over the layoffs, calling for stronger job protections. 'While we understand the industry is changing, workers shouldn’t bear the brunt of corporate restructuring,' said UAW President Shawn Fain.
