Steak and Blowjob Day (sometimes Steak & BJ Day or Steak and Knobber Day [1] ) is a satirical unofficial holiday [2] [3] [4] created in the United States as a male response to Valentine's Day and celebrated a month later, on March 14 . [5] On the day, women are purportedly supposed to cook a filet steak for and perform fellatio on a man in response to cards, chocolate, flowers and other gifts given by men on Valentine's Day. [6] [7]
The observance has no official status, being a popular Internet meme rather than an actual holiday, but various souvenirs and video clips have been produced about it. [1] [8] It was conceived in 2002 by DJ Tom Birdsey on WFNX radio.
It has been suggested that Steak and Blowjob Day is a backlash against the feminist movement ; the holiday has been criticized as sexist and patriarchal , though it has also been positively received by some, and used as a platform to fundraise for breast cancer research .
Several websites [9] claim to be the official site of Steak and Blowjob Day, but none of them identify as the creator. The sites concur that the holiday was devised by radio DJ Tom Birdsey in 2002, during a show on WFNX radio station in Boston , Massachusetts . [1] One of the various websites competing to be the 'official' page of the day stated "March 14th henceforth became 'Steak and Blowjob Day.' Simple, effective and self explanatory. No cards, no flowers, no special nights on the town; the name explains it all: just a steak and a BJ. That's it." [10] The "official" websites provide guides on how best to cook steak , and how to best perform fellatio . [11]
The day of celebration is sometimes suggested to be March 20 instead of March 14 , either because the former was proclaimed to be Steak and Knobber Day by another radio host Dave Rickards in 1998, or because the latter coincides with Pi Day , [1] [12] which observes the mathematical constant π (pi) . [13]
A female equivalent of the day is Cake and Cunnilingus Day on April 14. [14] [15]
According to the women's historian Lois Banner , the day appeared to be part of the backlash against the feminist movement , moving toward a version of human interaction inherent to hookup culture , and that men "are really frightened because women are outperforming them". [6] Activist Feminista Jones argues that it limits women's freedom of choice , thus being in the mainstream of traditional patriarchal restriction of female sexual behaviours . [8] The sexual educator Walker Thornton wrote that the day, although silly, emphasized for her the issues she had with the modern worldview of Valentine's Day . [16] Men's Health was unsure whether the holiday was actually celebrated, or whether the whole thing was a joke. [17] Spanish soccer newspaper Diario AS considers the holiday to be "surreal". [18] Student newspaper The Brown Daily Herald discussed the gender and sexual political implications surrounding the meme, suggesting that fellatio is considered by many to be a job the giver must endure as opposed to a form of enjoyment, and in the framing of Steak and Blowjob Day as a "man’s holiday" aimed at obtaining payback for Valentine's Day, this is perpetuated. [19] The Daily Dot considers it a "lame joke gone viral" [1]
Lifestyle blog YourTango felt the idea of such a holiday was an enshrining of male privilege and was, like Valentine's Day, a "silly calendar filler". [20] The Huffington Post stated that the day "made them want to gag", [21] and FHM and the Daily Mirror noted that businesses were cashing in on the unofficial holiday. [22] [2]
The concept of a men's movement [23] looking to create such a day has caused some controversy and incited opposition, [24] being described as antifeminist or patriarchal . [25] The men's magazine Maxim described it as the greatest holiday of all time, [26] whereas Cosmopolitan was unsure whether it was an outdated and sexist event or a bawdy celebration of sex and food. [27] One opinion piece on the day suggested it was Neanderthal in trying to force through the idea of a day devoted to the combination of fellatio and steak, and suggested a range of alternatives. [28]
The holiday has drawn attention from celebrities including Christina Aguilera , who encouraged her fans to celebrate it in 2014. [29] [30]
In 2016, Instinct noted that the day is also now being used as a way to successfully raise money for breast cancer research . [31] In Germany, Bild noted the day is known as Schnitzel und Blowjob Tag , [32] or Schniblo for short, [7] and in France, female-targeted magazine MadmoiZelle [ fr ] noted it was a day targeted at men, [33] while Le Bonbon [ fr ] said it was a "most American holiday". [34] In Spain, daily newspaper El Mundo noted in Spain it would be called Día del Solomillo y el Sexo Oral and that the day joined food and sex, which it opined were two of the greatest pleasures in the world. It is observed on March 14th each year as a satirical unauthorized holiday in the United States as a male answer to Valentine’s Day. It originated in the United States as a humorous unofficial holiday as a male response to Valentine’s Day and is celebrated a month later on March 14th each year.
As a dude-centric response to Valentine’s Day, it incorporates the two things that guys are stereotypically fond of: meat and more specifically, the consumption of meat. Where did the tradition of Steak and Blowjob Day begin?

So believe it or not, today is actually an obscure holiday; but we're not talking Festivus or National Pancake Day here, people…
The increasingly infamous “Steak & BJ Day” doesn't require a whole lot of explaining. “Invented” by a Tom Birdsey (whose online presence seems to be limited to this Myspace profile ), the idea behind the celebration is simple. Very simple. Conceived (however poorly) as the man's version of Valentine's Day, the holiday is described on one of two supposedly official (and NSFW) websites as such:
Over the years, Valentine's Day has become a commercial holiday for women. On February 14, intimate couples celebrate their love with candy, flowers, greeting cards, and other gifts of affection. Men do not want candy. Men have no need for flowers or teddy bears. There are two things men want: steak and a blow job.
While this may indeed be true, I have to take issue with the idea that Valentine's Day is a girly holiday that only dainty little ladies enjoy.
The actual story of how Valentine's Day got started goes (more or less) like this: More than 2,000 years ago, the Roman Emperor Claudius outlawed marriage for his soldiers because he thought they could fight better if they didn't have families. Then Saint Valentine decided he would illegally marry people anyway. These illegally married people would then go to prison for having defied the emperor and on occasion, the husbands would have their hearts physically cut out of their bodies, which would then be delivered, still bloody, to the cells of their terrified wives. And that is how the whole “sending hearts” tradition originated. So yeah. THAT happened.
The transition from this gruesome reality to the frilly, feminine smooch-fest we now face each February got started in the Middle Ages, with knights courting their ladies fair. From there on out, the holiday became focused on romantic love – until the early 19th century, when it blossomed into a boon for the greeting card industry that eventually left our culture with the admittedly annoying hullabaloo of inflated expectations that is modern Valentine's Day. And that is theoretically where the whole concept of an antidote to this manufactured set-up for heartbreak arose.
The problem with Steak & BJ Day, however, is not so much in the Anti-Valentine's Day sentiment it presents as in the not-so-tongue-in-cheek way that it suggests women should be obligated to cook and perform fellatio to make their men feel “special.”
Lois Banner , a professor of history at USC and the author of Women in Modern America: A Brief History told us in an interview:
“This [holiday] sounds like another part of the backlash against the feminist movement… this sort of reaction has happened a number of times in the last 100 years. What we are moving toward in this culture is a very gross version of human interaction. This is part of the hook-up culture. Most of my female students hate it, because they feel it is enforced by men.”
And maybe some men are in fact trying to reinforce the idea of male dominance in a world that is, however slowly, becoming increasingly equal for all genders.
Banner adds, “I think that men are really frightened because women are outperforming them in college, becoming equal admits to law, business, and most professional schools… Remember what happened after World War II, when women entered the work force in large numbers.”
Of course, after World War II, there was this little thing we like to call the sexual revolution, and without the sexual revolution, you can sure as hell bet there would be no Steak & BJ day either. So if you and your partner want to celebrate Steak & BJ Day, then seriously… more power to you! If you must, go all out and celebrate Steak & BJ Day in your own way. After all, L.A. does have an excellent selection of steakhouses . And vegan restaurants. And pretty much every kind of delicious cuisine you could possibly imagine .
So don't limit yourself! Are you a gay man, a lesbian or transgender? Go ahead and celebrate Steak & BJ Day if you want! Vegan? Get a tofu steak! Think the whole idea is just appallingly offensive? Right there with ya! Whatever you do on March 14th, just don't get your partner any sweet heart-shaped candy or sappy flowers…
Because maybe real love is not supposed to be all sappy and sweet — maybe it should be visceral and meaty and make you feel like a Roman soldier getting his heart ripped out. But whether you want to participate is, thankfully, still totally up to you.
Will you or would you celebrate Steak & BJ Day? Let us hear from you in the comments…
