Happy Monday, V Team! On today’s edition of Up To Speed Live host Andy Choi shared a full news rundown.
At Verizon, we’re known for running to a crisis and when we do, it’s the hours of training beforehand that gives our Verizon Response Team the ability to run to that crisis with confidence. This past week, our Major Emergency Response Incident Team (MERIT), which is part of the Verizon Response Team, took part in a critical simulation in Cary, N.C., involving a chemical spill of rocket fuel – this is part of the team’s annual HAZMAT recertification.
We shared a video of the simulation, and heard from MERIT lead Kelly Reed and Director of Business Continuity & Emergency Management Mark Paff.
In 2021, Verizon invested over $200 million in its network in North Carolina. Also in 2021, our Verizon Frontline Response Team has been deployed more than 30 times in support of public safety agencies in North Carolina to provide mission-critical communications capabilities to the first responders on the front lines of multiple emergency response operations.
V Team, we are well into the start of 3Q and it’s once again time to invite all employees to participate in a brief 3Q VZPulse survey that aims to ensure teams are addressing specific areas of opportunities across Verizon.
The survey is just three questions so it should only take about a minute to complete. You should be receiving the survey sometime today in an email from Gallup.
Our last survey had an 89% response rate, our highest ever on VZPulse, and we’re hoping to continue that momentum and reach a 100% response rate before the survey closes on August 22.
Attention V Team gamers, there’s an epic event happening tonight at 6 p.m. ET. If you’re a true gamer you know that NPCs, or non-player characters, always have the intel and so we’re bringing some of those NPCs to life in a one-of-a-kind stream that celebrates Xbox at Verizon.
We're turning Twitch gaming celebrity AverageJonas into a playable character on a real-life quest through rooms that are inspired by popular Xbox games. He’ll need to solve a series of quests to get to a treasure chest, where a special guest will greet him with some amazing giveaways. Throughout the event, folks who engage on the Twitch chat will be rewarded with some epic Xbox prizes. This will be an immersive, one-of-a-kind stream that amplifies Verizon's Xbox launch excitement, as we continue to make our mark on the gaming community.
Before we go, here’s what you can look forward to this week on Up To Speed.
If you have any questions, email them to live@verizon.com .

Though Frank Sinatra recorded the song for his 1980 release Trilogy: Past, Present, Future it was originally the theme song for the Martin Scorsese film of the same name, composed by John Kander and with lyrics by Fred Ebb. It however, is not to be confused with the song ‘New York, New York’ from the musical On The Town.

Spreading the News is a short one-act comic play by Lady Gregory , which she wrote for the opening night of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, 27 Dec. 1904. It was performed as part of a triple bill alongside William Butler Yeats 's "On Baile's Strand" and a revival of the Yeats and Gregory collaborative one-act "Cathleen Ni Houlihan" (1902). Audiences may have dozed through Yeats's play, [1] but Spreading the News was very successful and it is still acted at the Abbey Theatre as late as 1961. [2] Lady Gregory remarked after seeing an early performance of the play that "the audience would laugh so much at 'Spreading the News' that they lost about half the dialogue. I mustn't be so amusing again!" [3]

In a small village in rural Ireland, a new (English) magistrate inspects stalls at the local fair, expecting the worst. Because of Mrs. Tarpey's hearing impairment and the villagers' love of gossip, a misunderstanding grows and grows, leading to a false arrest for a murder that never happened. The play ends abruptly, with little resolution; we are left wondering what happened. Most of the humour is situational, rather than playing with language. Because we know what really happened at the beginning, most of the play uses dramatic irony .

The majority of the characters are flat and undefined. Many of them are stock characters , whose behavior is stereotypical and whose presence merely advances the plot.

Gossip : Gregory satirizes the way that people are happy to believe the worst about their neighbors, and tend not to think before they talk. She points out the ways in which gossip is distortive and leads to misunderstanding and even violence.

America : the characters in the play assume that America is a place where people go to escape prosecution, itself a dangerous place: Bartley says "I'm thinking if I went to America it's long ago the day I'd be dead."

Spreading the News is a comedy that exploits both English and Irish stereotypes. Lady Gregory was a member of the Protestant upper classes of Ireland, but she had sympathies for Irish Nationalism and was a strong supporter of Irish culture and identity. In this play she carefully reproduces the colloquial style and lower-class dialect of the workers on her estate [4] in an effort to represent their culture accurately, and yet at the same time she reproduces various stereotypes about Irish people . She also includes satire versus the English governing class (of which she was a member) in the character of the Magistrate. The Magistrate comes to the village expecting people to be committing crimes: in a way, he is imposing his idea of their corruption on them, and they accept it/live up to it. However, there are no real "sides" in the play. Spreading the News may have been written to help the Irish and the English understand each other by having them see each other's flaws.
