The UK prime minister has accepted his time is up, with a majority of Labour MPs now backing the Greater Manchester mayor who just crushed Reform UK in a by‑election, the Observer reported.

Burnham will be sworn in as an MP on Monday and could challenge Starmer for the leadership if he doesn't step down voluntarily.

Burnham's supporters claim over 201 Labour MPs are ready to back him – more than half the Parliamentary Labour Party. That means Starmer can no longer tell the King he commands the confidence of the House.
