A 15-year-old boy, a resident of Daytona North, or the Mondex in western Flagler, faces five felony counts of possession and one felony count of manufacturing child pornography after a tip sent to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office led to a raid on the child’s residence . Detectives uncovered the alleged evidence in the child’s computer and phone, which had been used to upload, disseminate and in some cases sell the materials .
The boy had used a PayPal account allegedly to sell images, and had used Facebook and Instagram, along with a Gmail account, for “trading, sharing and selling child images,” according to his arrest report . The boy knew what he was doing was wrong, he told authorities, he knew he’d get caught, but he said he did it anyway . The motivation? Money: he made “a couple of hundred dollars,” a sheriff’s spokesperson said . One of the victims exploited in material he manufactured is known familiarly to him .
“He is not enrolled in any of our schools,” a Flagler County district spokesman said . “He was last enrolled in 2016 .” (If an enrolled student faces a similar set of charges or allegations, the student would be prohibited from using any school-issued computers, and would not be allowed to be in any school location alone with other students, without adult supervision .)
The initial tip was sent to the sheriff’s detective Dennis Lashbrook, who’s in charge of the agency’s relatively new cyber crimes unit focused on child sexual abuse, which has been growing exponentially online . “Technology companies reported a record 45 million online photos and videos of the abuse last year,” The New York Times reported last September at the beginning of the paper’s ongoing investigation of what it terms a crisis “at a breaking point,” with tech companies, government and police no match for the online trade .
Earlier this month, the paper reported that the number of photos and videos had grown 50 percent in the past year, with 70 million images and videos reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, an agency that works with governments . Videos now outnumber images, with Facebook reporting almost 85 percent of the total, among 164 companies reporting findings (including Snapchat, Twitter, Google and Yahoo) . Cloaking mechanisms online are enabling users and manufacturers of child sexual abuse imagery to be almost immune to detection, enabling them to operate with impunity, the investigation found .
Lashbrook got the tip about the allegations involving the 15 year old boy from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, according to the boy’s arrest report . The center had itself gotten a report from Google, which had detected child pornography uploaded to Google Photos, its powerful image database and repository available to individual users for storage and classification . Google’s tip connected the user’s account to a phone number, an IP address and several names, two of them the child’s parents, one of them the child himself, who also spends time in Jacksonville . Google was further able to link the images to the type of camera that snapped them–in this case, a Motorola Moto E5 Play that was found among the boy’s possessions .
None of this should have been a surprise to the boy: Google Photos’ user content and conduct policy explicitly states : “Do not upload or share content that exploits or abuses children . This includes all child sexual abuse imagery (even cartoon images) and all content that presents children in a sexual manner . We will remove such content and take appropriate action, which may include disabling accounts and reporting to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and law enforcement .”
Lashbrook got the tip on Jan . 14 . He subpoenaed phone records, obtaining search warrants to search the records along the way, then got a search warrant, which was served on Jan . 23 in the Mondex with other detectives and assistance from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office . The child’s mother was at the house, as was the boy and at least one other adult . The other adult told authorities that he looks at legal “teen porn,” using apps on his phone . That was not what the detectives were concerned with . The detective sought to speak with the boy .
His mother granted permission, and at one point the boy requested to speak with the detective without his mother present, which his mother also allowed . Based on the numerous statements redacted from the arrest report–the sheriff’s office routinely redacts self-incriminating confessions–he then proceeded to explain much of what he had done online .
All the images and videos collected depicted pre-pubescent children, some of them in sexually explicit poses, some of them in the act of being sexually abused, one of them in a sexual act with an animal . The youngest children were 2 to 4 years old, the oldest was 9 . Because of the redactions, it is not clear what the boy had manufactured or how–it is not clear whose children were abused–but he is charged with one count of manufacturing .
“For victims of child sexual abuse,” The Times reported two weeks ago, “the recirculating imagery can cause lasting trauma . Online offenders are known to seek out children in the photos and videos, even into adulthood . Victims, or the parents of abused minors, also receive legal notices when their images are found during investigations, serving as constant reminders of their pain .”
The Sheriff’s Office began participating with the North Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in 2018 . The task force consists of state and local law enforcement who are dedicated to developing effective responses to the online enticement of children by sexual predators, child exploitation, and child obscenity and pornography cases . Sheriff Rick Staly directed the assignment of a full-time cybercrime unit last November .
“Our Major Case Unit, and especially with our new proactive Cybercrimes Unit, are not going to let up,” Staly was quoted as saying in a release . “If you are engaged in this behavior we are going to get you because these types of operations are only going to increase .”
The boy was turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Daytona Beach, which declined to take him . “It’s a point system, he has to score enough points to be accepted, to be housed there,” a sheriff’s spokesperson said . “They consider the crime he’s being charged with non-violent, which caused him to score low, so they said to release him to his guardian .”
how long till he’s back on the computer? And what will the parents do to stop him?
Oldtimer, sadly parents don’t care . These kids have been handed electronic devices from the time they were able to hold one . They are being raised by electronic devices . Parents are so proud that their 3 YO can navigate a tablet . What kids today don’t know, they will have friends that can guide them . Very sad . So thankful my children were raised in the stone age . They had 13 channels on the TV and were happy .
I can’t be leave they just released him back out there to continue to do this . I live out hear and have a small child this scares me . This kids deserves to be put in jail and get help, also why are the parents not being charged as well for allowing this to happen this is so sick . Shame on the Juvenile Department for not taking this seriously and saying this is not a violent crime I bet those kids and there parents have a very different outlook on that I know I would of that where my child .
If he thinks he is so smart and clever, treat him as an adult and get it over with . Why allow him to ruin his life when he can be stopped now with severe consequences . And I am just wondering, how did the parents not get any vibes on this? I certainly new what my kids were up to when they were that age . Sad all around .
We Americans have a broken education system .
@Mindy – be leave? Definition of believe – to consider being true or honest .
@Trailer Bob – There is a difference between new and knew .
Definition of new – of recent origin, production, purchase, etc .; having but lately come or been brought into being .
Definition of knew – simple past tense of know .
Bravo Gary! You know a two year old will do exactly what you JUST did when they are in the hot seat . Divert the attention off of them onto something else . Is the young man in this article a friend of yours?
I have no clue who the 15 year old is . Just proving that American education system needs improvements . Don’t you agree?
Probably just a typo OR talk to text typo – it happens . And no, I do not blame the education system AND I certainly don’t feel the need to make a public example out of – anyone . And to answer your question, here in Flagler County I don’t blame the education system . I think the problem rest squarely on the shoulder of the parental units bringing these children forth . Every fault in a child, is a failure as a parent .
Maybe we need to figure out why djj isn’t doing anything to keep dangerous minors away from other minors when the family cannot handle them .
The score sheet even says that the points can be overridden if placement back in the community can put the victim at risk-an apparent risk here since he knew at least one victim he took pictures of .
We hear how serious this is taken and the little creep goes home free . BS All around .
All minor children should be removed from that house IMMEDIATELY!

‘My advice to parents and carers is to create the culture before the crisis,’ says Dame Rachel de Souza

Parents should talk to children about online pornography as early as the age of eight, the Children’s Commissioner has said .
On Thursday 16 December, Dame Rachel de Souza issued a new guide warning parents not to be judgmental or react harshly if they discover that their child has seen, sent or received explicit images online .
The guide, titled “ Talking to your child about online sexual harassment ” was created with the help of a panel of teenagers, who shared which conversations they wish they had with their parents growing up .
The “overriding message” that had come from talks with young people was to “talk early, talk often” .
“My advice to parents and carers is to create the culture before the crisis . Children have told us they want their mums and dads to create a safe, judgment‑free space for them to talk about these issues,” De Souza wrote in the guide .
Young people urged parents to not let pornography become a “taboo subject”, and instead calmly explain why watching adult content at a young age can be harmful .
They felt that watching porn at a young age had affected their real-life behaviours and attitudes around gender roles, sex and consent .
Young girls said they had been sent porn by older boys at school, which was “scary and distressing” and that they would like to be able to talk to their parents about it .
In an interview with Times Radio on Thursday, the commissioner said young boys, in particular, felt conversations were needed early on .
“I’ve worked with 16 to 21-year-olds, and they told me that we need to be having these conversations as young as eight or nine – particularly for boys,” she said .
“We need to talk young, we need to talk often, we need to make those conversations relaxed . Don’t just wait for the crisis – talk and have conversations before the crisis . They also said: ‘Please don’t overreact, parents’ .”
As many parents might be buying their children their first smartphones and tablets this Christmas, de Souza said it was important that conversations about the dangers of the online world take place beforehand .
“Our group of young people want parents to be better informed about the risks of the online world and how to prevent early exposure to harmful content,” she said .
“They also warn that parents should know how to provide support and seek help if their child needs it, including knowing where to report incidents of online sexual abuse .”
Earlier this week, Billie Eilish opened up about how watching porn at a young age negatively impacted her, and that she believes it “destroyed her brain” .
In an interview with SiriusXM ’s The Howard Stern Show , the Happier Than Ever singer – who was 11 when she first began watching porn – says she now feels “devastated” that she was exposed to explicit content at such a young age .
“As a woman, I think porn is a disgrace . I used to watch a lot of porn, to be honest,” she said .
“I think it really destroyed my brain and I feel incredibly devastated that I was exposed to so much porn .”

The police in central Assam’s Nagaon district arrested two minor “porn addicts” who stoned a six-year-old girl to death for resisting sexual abuse .
An eight-year-old boy was also arrested for abetting the crime along with the parents of one of the two boys — both 11 — for trying to suppress the incident and tamper with evidence .
The girl was killed on October 18 at a village under the Uluoni police station . Found lying unconscious inside the toilet of a stone-crushing mill, she was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital .
Sub Divisional Police Officer Mrinmoy Das said the victim was a next-door neighbour of the three accused, who are related .
“The two 11-year-olds were porn addicts, seemed mature beyond their age and capable of execution of a gruesome crime . One of the minors, who studies at an English medium school, wanted to have a physical relationship with the victim but she resisted,” he said .
“He attacked her with a stone after she said she would tell her parents about his misbehaviour . The other 11-year-old boy also hit her with a stone and she died,” Mr . Das said, adding that the eight-year-old helped the other two dispose of the body .
The parents of the first 11-year-old were arrested for trying to hush up the crime and tamper with evidence, the police officer said .
“The boy was using his father’s smartphone . We found pornographic materials in the phone’s browsing history . He used the phone for his online classes but got addicted to watching porn and would show the X-rated contents to the other two, his cousins,” Mr . Das said .
The boys were sent to juvenile home on Thursday while the arrested parents are likely to be remanded to judicial custody, the police said .
Nagaon SP Anand Mishra said the incident underlined the need for family or social intervention and institutional guidance to children exposed to the ills of pornographic or violent content available online .
Jayanta Das, a Guwahati-based psychiatrist, blamed the incident on “abuse and overuse” of technology and lack of parental guidance with modern-day parents tending to let even infants be entertained with mobile phones instead of telling them stories or spending quality time with them .
“The pandemic too has created a situation where the parents are compelled to hand the mobile phone over to their children for online classes,” he told The Hindu .
He advised parents and adults to use mobile phones responsibly as children tend to imitate their actions .
“Access to porn has become very easy . This has hugely affected our children . The roles of parents and teachers have become very important,” the psychiatrist said .

Madalynne Iteen, who was fired as a part-time competitive cheer coach from Lowell schools Feb . 25, is photographed under a maroon jacket as she leaves the Gerald R . Ford Federal Building Monday, March 11, where she appeared in court on charges of producing and distributing child pornography .
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – An ex-competitive cheer coach has agreed to plead guilty to producing child pornography .
Madalynne Paige Iteen, 22, a former part-time worker at Lowell Area Schools, admitted she took sexually explicit photographs of a friend’s 8-month-old son in summer 2018, according to a plea agreement Iteen signed .
She is scheduled to enter a guilty plea Friday, Aug . 23 .
She is accused of taking the photos then distributing images on Snapchat . She sent them to the email account of a man in Ontario, Canada, whose account had been assumed by police after he was arrested for child pornography .
An attorney for the victim’s family said authorities do not think the images were shared beyond that .
Iteen was babysitting the boy at her Lowell home when she took the photos, records say .
“Defendant posed the child in sexually suggestive poses, and some of the photographs focused on the child’s nude genital region and anus,” the plea agreement says .
Production of child pornography carries a potential penalty of at least 15 years, and up to 30 years, in prison . A charge of distributing child pornography will be dismissed .
Upon conviction, Iteen will have to register as a sex offender .
She was hired in November as a part-time junior varsity competitive cheer coach at Lowell High School . She was fired in February after her arrest .
