the entire killing magic thing feels like the part 1 of a bigger story arc that never was finish, as if Star would find out later how bad this action was and she would need to restore magic later.
Magic was a useful tool in the same sense that nuclear weapons are useful. It represents monarchism, colonialism, imperialism. None of the Queens ever really used magic for good - - from day one Star was a danger to herself and everyone around her because of magic. She creates a butterfly monster that kills a teenager within the first five minutes that she's on earth.
You could argue that the only good Queen was Eclipsa, but even she developed horrifyingly dangerous spells that were rivaled only by Solaria.
Like any artistic work, you can't view it in a vacuum; you have to consider the allegory. Magic represented control, power, and hierarchy. Star realized hierarchy is bad, and dismantled it. Whether you agree with the message or not, that's why it was done, and why it had to be done.
Anyway I don't understand how anyone can have sympathy for the Magic High Commission. They were racists, and were bad news from day one. Especially Rombulus.
Star was a danger to herself and everyone around her because she was reckless. If Star kept her wand strapped to her hip and went about her daily life as a normal girl on Earth, it wouldn't ad to out on its own.
Ludo came after the wand because he was a loser that needed its power to force people to respect him.
Toffee came came after it because he had a revenge plan against Moon and all of Mewni.
The problem there was giving the tradition of giving a child the wand when she comes of age, rather than when she matures as a person and is ready to wield such power.
The wand was handed to an immature and reckless girl. That is not the wand's fault and not magic's either.
Whatever mayhem Star caused with it was a result of her recklessness. Don't blame the magic, just blame the careless decision to let her wield it.
With great power comes great responsibility and Star was not ready for to handle that.
Because star is just as impulsive and immature as she was in episode 1 🤦‍♀️
Because magic has the ability to destroy entire dimensions
Eclipsa and Glopgore together, have the power to destroy all of Mewni and more if they choose to.

The power of rushed plotlines and immature protagonist.
It was the most prudent solution that delivered the most good for the most amount of people. Magic had been used to oppress and destroy for too long and Star, especially, was tired of seeing her family use it to continue to cleave (divide) people when she wanted to use it to cleave (unite) people, which she did.
With or without a gun, an oppressor is still an oppressor.
Take the gun away and if he is truly evil he will take up a knife and continue.
Take the knife away and you can't cut your vegetables no more. Then where will the world be.
Cooking whole carrots and leeks that's where.
Now she has no way to protect herself or anyone. The monsters overpowered the mewmans for the most part in the hundreds of years of war. The most the mewmans could do was to keep the monsters at bay.
