This easy homemade tartar sauce is better than anything you can buy at the store . It’s extra creamy and perfect for serving next to your favorite seafood dishes. Jump to the Easy Homemade Tartar Sauce Recipe
This better than store-bought tartar sauce is incredibly simple to make . You probably already have most of the ingredients you need to make it in your kitchen. We love this sauce served next to homemade fish sticks and our favorite crab cakes .
More: See our creamy honey mustard sauce recipe ! It’s perfect with fish sticks or chicken nuggets .
The full recipe is below, but here is a quick overview of each ingredient. Here is what you will need to make tartar sauce from scratch:
Mayonnaise provides a creamy base. You can use store-bought mayo or for the best tartar sauce, try making your own mayonnaise .
Pickles add crunch and flavor to the sauce. We use dill pickles and particularly enjoy the refrigerated Claussen pickles for this. For a sweeter style, try bread and butter or sweet pickles instead.
Fresh lemon juice is essential for the best tartar sauce. It thins out the sauce making it the perfect consistency for dipping, and adds a fresh zesty flavor.
Capers are an optional ingredient since we don’t always have them in the fridge, but they add even more flavor and work wonders when mixed with lemon and herbs.
Fresh or dried dill is a must for us. If you don’t have dill, parsley is a good alternative.
Worcestershire sauce is an unusual ingredient, but it brings the sauce together. We only add a dash. We add Worcestershire sauce to dressings and sauces quite a bit. We use it to make this homemade ranch .
Dijon mustard is another optional ingredient, but if you have it on hand, we highly recommend it.
Just a few seconds of stirring turns the sauce into a creamy and delicious mixture.
For the best tartar sauce, refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes. It gets better and better overtime.
FAQ: Can I make the sauce lighter in calories? For a lighter sauce with fewer calories, you can swap the mayonnaise for light mayo or plain yogurt.
Here’s the great news, this easy homemade tartar sauce lasts for about a week when stored in the fridge.
We love making a double batch so we can enjoy it throughout the week.
Tartar sauce is a must when making our Maryland-style crab cakes .
I love to serve tartar sauce with roasted vegetables. I especially love dunking baked sweet potato fries or these oven-baked potato wedges into the sauce. Roasted cauliflower is also delicious.
This easy homemade tartar sauce is extra creamy and perfect when served next to shrimp, fish sticks, crab cakes, and even roasted veggies.
1/2 cup mayonnaise, try homemade mayonnaise
1 small dill pickle, chopped very small (3 tablespoons)
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, plus more to taste
1 tablespoon capers, chopped, optional
1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dried dill
1/2 to 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard, optional
Combine the mayonnaise, pickles, lemon juice, capers, dill, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard in a small bowl and stir until well blended and creamy.
Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Taste then adjust with additional lemon juice, salt, and pepper. For the best flavor, cover and store in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Keep, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for one week.

This is a steak sauce similar to my favorite brand. Great on steaks, burgers, and even fries!
Mix together ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, salt, pepper, and hot pepper sauce in a medium bowl. Transfer to a jar and refrigerate until needed.
I use Delmonte Ketchup because I find Heinz to be a bit sweeter.
Very tasty sauce! Now, I have to admit, I think "steak sauce" is an insult to a good steak, but what I was having tonight wasn't good steaks, it was some super thin cuts of round that I would be frying and with that, I like steak sauce. I'm out of both steak sauce and money to buy steak sauce so I found this recipe and had all the ingredients so I whipped it up. I'm eating it now and loving it! My only change was to use spicy brown mustard because I'm out of plain yellow. Thanks for cracking the steak sauce code! (And fyi for some reviewers: It doesn't taste just like A-1, or 57, because it's NOT either one of those things, but it IS very tasty.)
Pretty good but I wont stop buying A1 - still looking for the perfect recipe.

this right here is the best steak sauce recipe i have had in a long time!!
My husband really loved this sauce and it was so easy to make! It's also so simple to adjust the quantities, and make it more spicy!!
4 stars because my kids turned up their noses & demanded A1. This was very simple to make. The only changes that I made was to add an extra tbsp of Worsterchire and I also added about 1/2 tsp of liquid smoke. This a good steak sauce & I plan on keeping it around.
A real emergency in the house tonight - for Hubs, not for me. For him eating a steak without A-1 is like, hmmmm, for me eating a cheeseburger without pickles and sauteed onions. The Worcestershire gave it the A-1 flavor and the vinegar the appropriate tang. And, as always, in consideration of his sensitive innards, I left out the hot sauce. It won't make him a convert from his A-1 (his fault, by the way, for not writing it on the grocery list as it ran low!), but it sure was a lifesaver for his steak in a pinch.
A quick and easy last minute sauce. Tastes great, and with simple ingredients you're likely to have them on hand.
Very good! Easy to make, had all the ingredients on hand. I'm not a big fan of hot sauce though so I left that out.
I recently made this sauce when I realized I was out of steak sauce. We loved it. After making it I went shopping & had steak sauce on my list but after seeing it was over $4 for a bottle I will be making this many times. I made it as written the first time but it is such a recipe that you can make it to your liking. Thank you for a great recipe.
Pretty good but I wont stop buying A1 - still looking for the perfect recipe.
My husband liked this a lot. Made a great dipping sauce for his tator tots. We spread them on hamburgers; it had a nice tangy taste to it. I added some Splenda since it wasn't quite sweet enough (we used Heinz ketchup!) Different than the regular steak sauce I've used but I really liked it. Thanks!
I love this steak sauce it is simple, but yet very delicious. Thumbs up on this one.
Very tasty. I've never been a fan of A1 & most of the time, a great steak needs no sauce on my plate but my husband likes a little sauce. I substituted the apple cider vinegar for balsamic & will be saving this recipe to make again when we run out. Thanks for sharing.
Not bad if you realize you're out of A1. I added some garlic powder and onion powder to it, but my husband still prefers his A1 steak sauce.
I just bought a steak and realized I did not have steak sauce. I made this and loved it.
Seriously - this tastes better than store-bought. I'm not a huge steak fan and NEVER have steak sauce around, but it whips up in a couple minutes and is DELISH!
I have been making a similar steak sauce for years, mine has one exception I use Soya Sauce instead of salt. I simply enjoy the flavor of the soya sauce better than plain salt.
The boys in the family like this so much they put it on all their meat. Fairly simple recipe similar to a certain namebrand.
This was good, I did have to make a few adjuments... instead of worcestershire I used soy sauce. I also added some more spices, just to suit my taste.
I added cayenne instead of hot sauce. I also added garlic powder and more worcestershire because
