A great book! I could write volumes about Leslie Thomas's books about the British Army as seen through the eyes of young men called up for National Service.His characters are so true to life.Mr Thomas is a very successful author in the United Kingdom. I do not hesitate to say that this man is my FAVORITE AUTHOR BY FAR ! His books are very enjoyable and ensure very delightful reading. He knows his material so well due to his own experiences in the British Army.His books are delightfully funny and true to life.The movie "The Virgin Soldiers", made in 1969 and filmed in Singapore is also a masterpiece of reality for the British national servicemen on the post World War Two Period;as,indeed, is THIS BOOK.................... ALL of Mr Thomas's books are very enjoyable and hilarious.........My word on it ! !!!

Return to form
The final part of LT's Virgin Soldiers trilogy albeit, apart from a short scene setting opening, it is chronologically the second part. Set in Malaya in 1950, Brigg and his chums are just about to step on the boat out of Malaya, for repatriation and demobbing, at the end of their two years of National Service, when their term is extended by six months, in response to the Korean War. A return to the form of "The Virgin Soldiers", following the disappointment of the salacious and contrived "Onward Virgin Soldiers".

Still a great read
The second book on National Service written by Leslie Thomas and still as funny. I started work just as a lot of the soldiers he wrote about were just coming back from Malaya and the stories they told about their time out there could have filled volumes more.

Leslie Thomas books
I just love ALL the books of Leslie Thomas and have read them all more than once, one SIX times. I purchased with Stand up Virgin Soldiers the others in the Virgin Soldiers triology as my own copies had gone missing. All three books have stood the test of time and are still as fresh and funny as the were when i first read them. If you have not read any Leslie Thomas books then you are missing out on one of lifes real pleasures.

This book is of its day. National service was the norm and humour generated by the book is great. Whether or not you served be prepared to smile, feel sad and sometimes laugh aloud when reading.

Just as good as virgin soldiers
Another story of the virgin soldiers,loving their way through Malaya.A few die along the way. Some drift in and out of story,but the virgin soldiers march on.

The worst has happened. On the eve of their return to Blighty, Brigg and his fellow National Servicemen find themselves sentenced to another six months in Panglin Barracks.
Many of the surviving characters from The Virgin Soldiers live again in these pages: dogged Tasker, the odious Sergeant Wellbeloved, the vulnerable Colonel Bromley Pickering, and the comically touching Juicy Lucy.
But we encounter new characters too: the fanatical and demented Lieutenant Grainger; the endearing Welshman, Morris Morris - strong as a horse but bafflingly buxom; US Private Clay - mysteriously lost in transit by the American Army; and last, but not least, Bernice Harrison, the sporting nurse who threatens to replace the wayward Lucy in Brigg's affections.
