Scott Polar Research Institute. Department of Geography , University of Cambridge. Environmental change in the Russian Arctic has been unprecedented. Climate change has quickened the growth of trees and shrubs, but at the same time, people are polluting the environment, logging forests, extracting minerals, intensifying use of lands and the thawing of the permafrost. Hotter and drier summers have brought extreme forest fires to Eastern Siberia, in some cases they burn throughout the extremely cold winter. I will combine use of images from satellites and climate data with field research on the ground. I will measure and describe vegetation in several sites in Eastern Siberia Sakha Republic and examine how forest fire scars alter permafrost and growing conditions for trees, and how the increased use of forests in the region intensified the fire risk. I will use previously collected field data and images from satellites to examine how the vegetation growth in this area is slowed down by pollution in comparison with unpolluted areas. Ground spectroradiometry studies of vegetation in the Russian Arctic, using hyperspectral and multispectral sensors, with an intention to use the outcomes for vegetation mapping with multispectral and hyperspectral satellite imagery. This is carried out jointly with Dr Gareth Rees. Long-term collaborative programme between SPRI and the Geography Faculty of Moscow State University, to develop and apply spaceborne monitoring techniques to tundra and forest change in the Russian Arctic and elsewhere as a consequence of airborne industrial pollutants. I have applied UAV-derived data to map nutrients and plant stress at selected agricultural fields in Russia as part of the Agrodrone Group startup, and to derive structural parameters of northern forests in a recent UK-Russian project 'Multiplatform remote sensing of the impact of climate change on northern forests of Russia'. This project was jointly carried in by the M. Joint UK-Norway-Russian projects under the auspices of the International Polar Year to study the current status and dynamics of the tundra-taiga ecotone in Russia. More information is available. Analysis of satellite imagery and development of image processing techniques to study debris flows, glacial lake outburst floods, unstable glaciers and slopes in the mountains of several regions of the world, including Caucasus, Tien Shan, Pamirs, Kamchatka and St Elias Mountains, Canada.
