The SSL_use_PrivateKey_file function loads the private key for use with a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) session.
Last updated
Changed for PUT06.
Changed for PUT00.
LIBS := CSSL
#include
int SSL_use_PrivateKey_file(SSL *ssl, const char *file, int type)
Note: This parameter is ignored if you are using a private key that resides in the z/TPF keystore.
Return code 1 indicates that the function was successful.
A return code equal to 0 indicates an error. The following are the most likely causes of errors:
The private key file does not exist or you do not have permission to read that file.
The private key file is not in PEM format.
If the private key file is encrypted, the password is not correct or no password was provided.
The specified z/TPF public key pair name does not exist or is not active.
If you loaded a certificate file before issuing this function, the public key in that certificate does not match the corresponding private key in the private key file.
Programming considerations
To use this function, you must include the library specified in the prototype in your makefile.
Before calling the SSL_use_PrivateKey_file function, you must identify the password for the private key file by issuing the SSL_CTX_set_default_passwd_cb_userdata function. Do this only if the private key file has been encrypted. Do not issue the SSL_CTX_set_default_passwd_cb_userdata function if you are using a private key that resides in the z/TPF keystore.
For sample SSL applications, see SSL examples.
See z/TPF Security for more SSL information.

I self generated 2 self-signed certificates with openssl for testing purposes using :
and in my nginx.conf file , I set up the Https servers with :
however testing the nginx config, I get the following error :
what could be wrong ? is it because I try to setup 2 certificates for 2 different subdomains (admin. and api. ) for the same domain cockpit.yves ?
You have the wrong name for your ssl_certificate_key file. Cut & paste error? – Richard Smith Feb 21 '16 at 19:06
thanks that's it... rekey your comment as an answer if you want me to vote for it ... – user762579 Feb 22 '16 at 8:05
I faced the same issue, This can happen when the ssl_certificate_key is not the correct key for the ssl_certificate. Hope this helps someone :) – Jaspal Singh Oct 21 '16 at 16:52
Your key file probably doesn't contain your key.
I had this problem too. In my case, I'd pasted my crt in to my key file (and my actual crt file was correct).
My key files begin with the string: -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
Then ends with the string: -----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
In the comments under the question, Richard Smith actually suggested this as the solution. I'm posting it as an answer to help others later. Props to Richard.
I also experienced this message by pasting a combined cert before the cert in the crt file I fed my nginx server.

I have no clue what you have just told in the update what was the solution what have exactly solved your problem what does this answer actually states – nikoss May 22 '18 at 15:05
@Nikoss, this answer basically just teaches us that if we have the wrong contents in our key or crt files, then we can get "SSL_CTX_use_PrivateKey_file" type error messages from nginx. – James T Snell May 22 '18 at 19:09
