AI-based Technology in Agriculture

Sustainable farming practices are becoming increasingly necessary for Sri Lanka - the worlds 6th most vulnerable country to climate change. The availability of drinking, and agricultural water is reducing and wasting and micronutrient deficiencies continue to be pervasive across the entire population. Alongside this, gender inequality is preventing improvement to the country's poverty and hunger status. The nations food supply chains are ripe for innovation and development. Utilising a climate smart, protected agricultural environment allows the LSC to be resilient to climate shocks and extreme weather events. Reducing pest and disease concerns enables the company to grow produce without the use of chemical spray - enhancing nutritive qualities. The LSC provides equal employment for men and women, supporting rural uplift. Visit covid19innovationhub. Updated Dec 15, Debbie Rolmanis Send Message. The Lanka Salad Company is a sustainable agricultural company growing lettuce, leaves, herbs and bell pepper in climate smart, evaporatively-cooled greenhouses in Sri Lanka. Seeds are planted into a growing medium until a root base is established. They are then transferred to grow in channels, with their roots sitting in nutrient rich water. Water is pumped through RO and UV filtration before being supplemented with nutrients and circulated through the system. The Nutrient Film Technique is a popular and versatile hydroponics system that uses a pump to delive The Nutrient Film Technique is a popular and versatile hydroponics system that uses a pump to deliver fertilised water to the grow tray and a drain pipe to recycle the unused nutrient solution. For NFT, the nutrient solution is continuously flowing over the roots. This is accomplished using gravity. The grow tray is placed at an angle to allow the water to flow down towards the drain pipe, and new solution is constantly being pumped into the high end of the tube. NFT is an active system, meaning it relies on moving parts to work. The nutrient solution flows in a thin film over the roots, ensuring that they are watered and fed but not completely soaked. The thin film ensures that the upper part of the roots will remain dry and have access to oxygen in the air. Automatic climate control via remote sensors measure temperature, relative humidity and light levels. This data is logged on software, sending signals to hardware in each greenhouse, activating mechanisms controlling shade netting, exhaust fans and cooling systems. Data logging allows all operations and inputs to be recorded, providing full traceability per crop batch. The LSC is ready to expand production capability to fulfil domestic demand and to scale into international markets. The company has a clear 5 year plan to serve more people with nutritious food, and to provide social and environmental uplift. Problem Sustainable farming practices are becoming increasingly necessary for Sri Lanka - the worlds 6th most vulnerable country to climate change. Solution Utilising a climate smart, protected agricultural environment allows the LSC to be resilient to climate shocks and extreme weather events. We provide local employment opportunities, helping to drive economic development in rural communities. Through our ESG initiatives we are able to serve local and national communities via social and environmental development. Large-scale construction projects are offered to local companies and infrastructure development in the area surrounding the farm has assisted the local community. Our mission is to inspire and nurture our people, our communities and our environment by providing safe and healthy food, grown with a commitment to sustainability, equality and prosperity. We believe in a food secure future for Sri Lanka, and are committed to being part of the solution. Our vision is that everyone in Sri Lanka has access to fresh, nutritious, affordable food and the LSC hopes to be a driver to make that vision a reality. The LSC is seeking funding to implement Phase 1 of expansion. This involves the completion of our RO filter systems and deep water culture, and the construction of 5 additional greenhouses in the first half of The company is poised to enter new markets including the Maldives, Singapore and Qatar in early The LSC is increasing domestic sales and forecasts uptake by existing retailers in outlets across the country.
