It had been dubbed ‘The Night of a Thousand Cocks’, and while there may not have been quite so many as that, The Penis Gallery remained an event which felt ground-breaking in discussing the taboo of penis anxiety in such a forum.
The idea behind the gallery, which took place at The Book Club in Shoreditch, was to show images of penises in their relaxed states to show the variety of shape, size, colour, all the individual quirks which makes them all unique, and all valid. In a society steeped in free online porn, the ideas of what a penis should look like are dangerously out of whack – sexual dysfunction is massively on the rise amongst young men, as anxiety about performance and size is fuelled by this illusory world. In the spirit of our Festival of New Masculinity , we wanted to support men by getting real, and embracing difference.
As part of the event photographer and storyteller Laura Dodsworth presented some of the work from her Bare Reality series of books, which includes ‘Manhood’, for which she photographer 100 penises and spoke to the men about their relationships with them.
She told us that many felt their penises where the very essences of them, so that if they felt like they were too small down there, then they felt like less of a man. Even men with larger penises were conflicted, Laura read quotes from one man who said he used his penis “as a shield” to everything else and had developed self-esteem issues. The message of learning to love who we are, and feeling that we are enough, came through loud and clear.
Laura was then joined onstage by Anouszka Tate , Ant Smith and Dr Chloe Paidoussis-Mitchell for a panel discussion about the issue. In a wide ranging discussion, which took in questions from the audience, there were issues dealt with on boyhood trauma, the role partners can play in making people feel more comfortable about themselves, and sex education in schools vs sex education in the family home and communities.
Ant, author of the Small Penis Bible, felt the need to change the language around penises, where size always matters, while Chloe felt part of the danger in all this is that men often bottle up their trauma and not ever talk through their issues. Anouszka, whose podcast Project Pleasure is one of the best out there, talked about the benefits of growing up in a body positive household, why unsolicited dick pics are never welcome, and why not all porn is bad porn: “you must pay for your porn!”

Tennis ace Andy Murray may have revealed more than he intended on Instagram on Tuesday (January 29).
The former BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner shared an update with fans after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in London.
Sharing two photos, Andy wrote: "I underwent a hip resurfacing surgery in London yesterday morning...feeling a bit battered and bruised just now but hopefully that will be the end of my hip pain I, now have a metal hip as you can see in the 2nd photo and I look like I've got a bit of a gut in photo 1."
In the first photo, Andy is seen smiling from his hospital bed, while the second pic shows an x-ray of his new metal hip — with a surprise appearance from his penis!
While many fans took to the comments to offer him their best wishes, others pointed out that the x-ray revealed more of Andy than they'd ever thought they'd see.
The appearance of a patient's penis in an x-ray is known in radiology as the Throckmorton sign.
Murray crashed out of the Australian Open in the first round earlier this month after revealing during a press conference that he had been struggling after undergoing hip surgery last January.
"I've been in a lot of pain for about 20 months now. I've pretty much done everything I could to try and get my hip feeling better and it hasn't helped loads," Murray said.
"I'm in a better place than I was six months ago but I'm still in a lot of pain. I can still play to a level, but not a level I have played at."
"I'd like to play until Wimbledon — that's where I'd like to stop playing — but I'm not certain I'm able to do that."
He later spoke to BBC Sport about having hip resurfacing surgery, saying if he went ahead with the op it would be to improve his quality of life, rather than "with the view to playing at the highest level again".
He then added: "If I do that, I'm not sure I will be competing again."
