Back in the day, and by that I mean back when New York's finest did not keep fans waiting eight years for a new album (as they did following 2003's "We've Come For You All"), Anthrax were an inexorably brutal thrash/speed metal band with some power metal influence. This fact is presented crystal clearly on the group's second full-length effort, 1985's "Spreading The Disease," a very appropriate title for this record in that it is a highly contagious and infectious one. It is rooted in no-holds-barred thrash picking and pounding back beats, but iced off with oddly tuneful and harmonic clean singing. The end result plays like a non-stop, forty-four-minute long ball of white hot rage and hyper-kinesis. Indeed, from the very second the exhilarating opener, "A.I.R.," begins until the last second of the uncompromisingly off-the-rails and double-bass-driven closing blast, "Gung-Ho," the intensity and frenetic energy levels are never compromised in favor of obligatory balladry or uninspired (or even half-hearted) riffing. A definite Metallica-esque vibe is present on the aforementioned opening "A.I.R.," a track that hits the ground running with pounding thrash grooves, violently thrashing guitar leads, lots of double bass drumming, and ripping, piercing shred soloing. The vocals in this song are also of note, as they are of the Iron Maiden-ish variety, and are sure to include plenty of anthemic choruses, as well. Elsewhere, "Lone Justice" finds a good bass intro giving way to thrashing grooves, and catchy, galloping riffs; "Madhouse" is a crunchy chugger; and "Medley" absolutely flies by with its blistering riffage, soloing, and catchy, call-and-response vocal patterns. And what to make of the mid-tempo chugger that is "The Enemy"? Well, it certainly does differentiate from the norm in that it allows the listener his or her first chance to really catch their breath, but is nevertheless a vehement, vitriolic, and caustic anti-Nazi rant, and a tirade that cuts right down to the bone. But immediately following this comes the blistering "Aftershock," which overflows with streamlined, chainsaw-fast guitar leads and screaming, white-hot soloing. Then we get "Armed And Dangerous," which puts the album back on the more restrained side of the line, as it is a Judas Priest-y ballad, at least in part. And the other part of it is a blistering, blood-pumping thrasher with ripping speed, insistent double bass thudding, fiery solos, and killer (and thus instinctively memorable) choruses. And the set is rounded out by "Medusa," a track that plays more-or-less like a piece of pure power metal, what with its tuneful, Bruce Dickinson-lite vocals icing a musical bed of hook-heavy crunch and chug riffing and winding melodical solos. Said tune is also of note for featuring some catchy, call-and-response vocal patterns in its choruses, thus making them sound not unlike a precursor to 1986's "Among The Living." It is just one other song that serves to beg one final, irrefutable question: Why should you bother waiting the excruciatingly long periods of time for new Anthrax material when the old-school stuff rocks so darn righteously?!

As big of a fan as I was of Among the Living and Persistence of Time, I wasn't immediately drawn to this album. I can't really imagine why, but I didn't bother checking it out until a friend of mine bought a copy. I listened to that with him, and was highly impressed. This album can't quite match either AtL or PoT, but it's still of very high quality, and quite different from either of those, which makes it more than worth owning. This album is substantially less thrashy than their following few albums. It's got much more of a NWOBHM feel with an obvious Iron Maiden influence. Frankly, it just barely qualifies as a thrash album. Still, despite stylistic differences, their talent is already apparent. Charlie is already a first rate thrash drummer, with a lot of energy and nice use of the double bass, and newcomer Bello's bass makes it presence known, unlike just about every other thrash bassist out there. Ian's rhythm guitar isn't a tight or sharp as it would become, but it's noticeably more melodic and can still thrash it up quite efficiently. Belladonna's vocals are also more melodic than they'd later be. He's a little over the top occasionally, but that's alright, especially in conjunction with the more light-hearted feel of the album. Over the next couple albums Anthrax's lyrics became progressively more serious and dark. On Spreading the Disease, however, they are almost completely non-substantial or light hearted. This wouldn't work for every thrash band, or album, but it works here, and makes for an album which is more genuinely fun to listen to then lots of other high quality thrash albums. This is also more hook-driven then just about any other thrash album I've heard. Fortunately, they almost always work, and pretty much every track has a nicely melodic and immediately memorable chorus.(and a nice pre-chorus too, much of the time) The big standout on this album is Lone Justice. Unspeakably catchy, but with the riffs to back it up. A.I.R. is a classic opener with all the energy that such a title entails. The closer, Gung-Ho is probably the thrashiest thing here, with an absolutely outstanding main riff, and a copmletely silly but still very enjoyable chorus/pre-chorus. The Enemy breaks the mood of the album, as it is a very serious minded song about Hitler/Holocaust etc. It still works, although it certainly isn't the best thing here. Stand or Fall and Aftershock are the relative weak points, but they are still some solid early thrash. Lastly, although the rest of the song doesn't stand up to some of the stronger material on the album, the intoduction to Armed & Dangerous is just great, perhaps the best part of the album. Great vox from Joey. Lots of melodrama, perhaps, but rather effecting as well. Anthrax were one of the best thrash acts around, and this is one of their classic albums. Get it.

Phenomenal timeless classic. Must have for all real thrashers.

As usual so far no complaints from his cd purchase! Five star

This review is for the music it self, but I must warn others like the other reviews I just read. I imported disc 1 to my library then disc 2, and behold both discs were the same even though labeled differently. Disc 1 was the original album plus one bonus track, disc 2 was the bonus content but identical songs from disc 1. I guess it’s a manufacturing issue. I put in for a replacement, hopefully I get a correct copy. At least the AutoRip is exact like the song listing.

Good Album, Manufacturing Defect!

Heavy, fast, and serious. Anthrax began as a killer thrash band in the early 1980s. They messed around with rap for a moment, but settled into a great metal band. This album is my favorite from the New York based band. Listen on 10!

the 30th Anniversary Remastered 2CDs ar not too much to talk about the sound in not much improved but the bonus disc with part of a show is good and odd ?alt. tacks i ok but they should have included the full show .Metallica had the idea wih their 30th Anniversary Remastered boxes extra's extra's extra's! and more extra"s. this is realy nothing special but if you didn't have this album before get it other wise maybe not!

This is my favorite Anthrax album and always gets me pumped up! My only problem with this is the sound quality. I'm not sure if it's because the original recording had sound quality issues (it was 1985 after all), but it simply not loud. I can have the volume all the way up in my pickup and still not be where I want it. A re-master might be nice.

Great Quality Reissue.

I had an original copy of this album in 1985 but used it in a swap deal to a friend. I always intended to replace it and, 33 years later, I have! The album is actually better than I remember with not just the classic tunes sounding good. The whole album is great. I never really thought Anthrax fitted the thrash tag as (the first album aside) their music was never really manic enough. I'd place them in a more speed/classic heavy metal niche. To my mind this is their best album by far, sounding fresh with a great raw production which ultimately suits the bands style. Don't know if this has been remastered but I honestly can't remember the album sounding this good way back when. Just an absolute classic of it's time, simple as! Having ordered the vinyl version I was pleasantly surprised to discover the vinyl was a white pressing, a very good quality (180g) pressing at that. If you remember this album and wonder how it's aged buy it..... it's way better than you remember!

Bonus Disc Pressing Error

Sounds great, brilliant remaster - the reduced stars are to flag up that mine came with two album discs, one of which was printed with the bonus disc label. Exact same ten tracks on both and zero bonus content. No search results online for a printing error. Have to arrange something with the seller who was not at fault as the disc was sealed

when anthrax ruled!!

if you are into anthrax and don't have this record then buy it!! for me the 80's anthrax are when they were at there best and this album stands out among all metal of the 80's. from track 1 "a.i.r." it just starts getting you tapping your foot and then by track 3 "mad house" your jumping around. this was the first full length record with joe belladonna on vocals and his voice is strong and clear and melodic, the best singer they ever had (they where bigger than metallica at the time, worst mistake they made when they lost belladonna) this record is a classic metal record with great tracks "medusa" "armed and dangeous" a must for all anthrax fans a must!!

Brilliant album but sound is quite low. This needs a remaster/deluxe edition. Otherwise, it's still Anthrax so still awesome!

Bought as a christmas Gift

After a very Thrashy year including a trip to Sonisphere to watch the big 4 all in one day I decided to treat my brother to a new bit of Vynil for his collection. He seems very pleased, the disk was in good condition, came well packaged and promptly for christmas. All in all a good buy.
