When Olympic gymnastics competitors enter the North Greenwich Arena for the first time tomorrow the eyes will be as much on what they wear as how many somersaults they make.
What used to be a very wholesome affair the early 20th century now seem to be a competition between the teams of who can out-skimp the other as the focus of the Artistic Gymnastics leotards have shifted from the latter to the former.
These photographs show how leotard-fashion has changed over a century with hemlines creeping higher and higher with each Olympics.
The Danish gymnastics team at the London Olympics in 1908 wearing uniforms that look more fitting for karate than gymnastics - times have certainly changed
July 1908: Two members of the Danish troupe exercising on the 'horse' at the London Olympics wearing skirt-trousers and long-sleeved shirts
Back in 1908 there was nothing flattering about the competitors outfits and there was not an ounce of glitter or a rhinestone in sight
The first snap show a Danish troupe from the London Games in 1908 wearing light knee length skirt-trousers and modest tops which give nothing away covering from wrist to neck.
As they line up, the difference between their modest covering outfits are in stark contrast to modern-day ‘easy on the Lycra, heavy on the glitter’ flesh-bearing competitionwear.
When the Olympics returned to London in 1948 the American team is fashion forward showing short sleeved leotards but although a lot racier than 40 years earlier they have still got nothing on modern leotards.
Marian Barone of the U.S. team on the balance beam at the Earl's Court arena when the Olympics came back to London in 1948. Although rather daring compared to 40 years earlier, Marian and her teammates' outfits would be considered loose fitting at a modern-day competition
A Russian gymnast competing at the next Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, 1952, show that not much happened as 1940s became fifties in terms of leotard styling
Although the leotards may have become a little bit tighter from the 1950s, they remained plain with high necklines and it was not until the noughties that Olympic gymnasts began entering the arena covered in enough rhinestones to satisfy Dame Edna.
The 'Evolution of the Leotard' seem to have stalled during the seventies through to the late nineties where gymnasts preferred plain colours letting their talents speak for themselves.
On this side of the millennium however it seems it is just as much about winning the competition as it is about out-glamming each other in the fashion stakes.
Plain leotard - check! Vera Cáslavská of the Czech Republic (then Czechoslovakia) went on to win 5 gold medals at the 1968 Games - all the while wearing a plain leotard sans bling and glitter, pictured at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo
1972: Olga Korbut representing the USSR in Munich in modest competitionwear
1976: Romania's Nadia Comaneci is sporting Adidas at the Montreal Olympics
1984: Mary Lou Retton of the United States in action during the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles
Back in the USSR: The late eighties shine through in the hairstyles of the Soviet Union team but the leotards are more generic than ever as they celebrate their gold medals at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul
And as the girls up the glitter-factor the fabric budget seems to have suffered with more flesh on show than ever at the 2008 Games in Beijing.
The contrast between the 1988 USSR team and the Russian team from the Beijing Olympics is stark to say the least and the Chinese team’s outfits from 2008 barely cover their modesty.
What a difference the nineties make: Russia wins yet another team gold 16 after the above at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens - the only thing which seem to have changed dramatically are the leotards
The latest trend is incorporating traditional clothing into the leotards. Here is Team China in Athens eight years ago wearing something which with a bit of imagination and a lot more fabric would resemble traditional Chinese clothes
Tradition: Elements of their country's culture is displayed in rhinestones and elaborate flower design on competitors from Russia, right, Ukraine, centre and Spain, right
After the millennium there is a visible trend of incorporating national heritage in the leotards.
Whereas before the colours of one’s flag seem to have been sufficient the 2004 Athens games saw the Chinese team interpreting traditional clothes in a way which can only be described as ‘Less textile is more and more bling is more’
Skimpier than ever: The silver medal-winning Chinese team pose on the podium at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games wearing next-to-nothing leotards
Less cover more bling: Team Russia performs with ropes in 2007 following the trend of more skin on show in leotards which look more like strappy bikinis
On trend is the Italian rhythmic gymnastics team performing with ropes during a 2008 competition in Turin in leotards heavy on the glitter and fake diamante stones
But you are comparing old photosof artistic gymnas...
