t's not often a late season game between the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills is very important to both teams, but that's the situation ahead of Saturday afternoon's Week 16 showdown at Gillette Stadium.I
The Patriots clinched a playoff spot with their Week 15 road win over the Cincinnati Bengals, and they can win the AFC East title with a victory against the Bills this weekend. New England enters with an 11-3 record and the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoff race, while the Bills are only one game behind at 10-4. The Bills have a firm grip on the first wild card spot after clinching a postseason berth in Sunday night's win against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
New England barely escaped Buffalo with a 17-10 win in Week 4, and its offense has struggled over the last six games by scoring an average of just 21.6 points. The Bills have a very good defense and quality wins over the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers over the last couple weeks. In between those victories was a slim 24-17 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens, who crushed the Patriots 37-20 in Week 9.

So, with these results and other factors in mind, the spread for Saturday's game between the Patriots and Bills should be pretty small, right?
Well, not so fast. Oddsmakers are confident in the Patriots' chances of winning. The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas has pegged the defending Super Bowl champions as 7-point favorites in the opening betting lines for Week 16.
The Patriots are 5-1 at home this season and have won 21 of their last 22 games at Gillette Stadium. They are 8-6 against-the-spread (ATS) in 2019, and only 3-3 ATS at home. The Bills are an impressive 9-4-1 ATS through 14 games, including a 6-0-1 ATS record on the road.
The smart bet, based on this opening spread, is taking the Bills to cover. It's hard to trust the Patriots to win by more than seven points in this matchup given their offensive issues (averaging just 20.3 points scored over the last six games) and lackluster performances against good teams in 2019.
