A spread can have several meanings in finance. Generally, the spread refers to the difference between two prices, rates, or yields . In one of the most common definitions, the spread is the gap between the bid and the ask prices of a security or asset, like a stock, bond , or commodity. This is known as a bid-ask spread.

Spread can also refer to the difference in a trading position – the gap between a short position (that is, selling) in one futures contract or currency and a long position (that is, buying) in another. This is officially known as a spread trade.

In underwriting , the spread can mean the difference between the amount paid to the issuer of a security and the price paid by the investor for that security—that is, the cost an underwriter pays to buy an issue, compared to the price at which the underwriter sells it to the public.

In lending, the spread can also refer to the price a borrower pays above a benchmark yield to get a loan. If the prime interest rate is 3%, for example, and a borrower gets a mortgage charging a 5% rate, the spread is 2%.

The bid-ask spread is also known as the bid-offer spread and buy-sell. This sort of asset spread is influenced by a number of factors:

For securities like futures contracts , options, currency pairs, and stocks, the bid-offer spread is the difference between the prices given for an immediate order—the ask—and an immediate sale – the bid. For a stock option , the spread would be the difference between the strike price and the market value .

One of the uses of the bid-ask spread is to measure the liquidity of the market and the size of the transaction cost of the stock. For example, on Jan. 11, 2022, the bid price for Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, was $2,790.86 and the ask price was $2,795.47. 1 The spread is $4.61. This indicates that Alphabet is a highly liquid stock, with considerable trading volume.

The spread trade is also called the relative value trade. Spread trades are the act of purchasing one security and selling another related security as a unit. Usually, spread trades are done with options or futures contracts. These trades are executed to produce an overall net trade with a positive value called the spread.

Spreads are priced as a unit or as pairs in future exchanges to ensure the simultaneous buying and selling of a security. Doing so eliminates execution risk wherein one part of the pair executes but another part fails.

The yield spread is also called the credit spread . The yield spread shows the difference between the quoted rates of return between two different investment vehicles. These vehicles usually differ regarding credit quality .

Some analysts refer to the yield spread as the “yield spread of X over Y.” This is usually the yearly percentage return on investment of one financial instrument minus the annual percentage return on investment of another.

To discount a security’s price and match it to the current market price, the yield spread must be added to a benchmark yield curve . This adjusted price is called an option-adjusted spread . This is usually used for mortgage-backed securities (MBS), bonds, interest rate derivatives, and options. For securities with cash flows that are separate from future interest rate movements, the option-adjusted spread becomes the same as the Z-spread.

The Z-spread is also called the yield curve spread and zero-volatility spread . The Z-spread is used for mortgage-backed securities. It is the spread that results from zero-coupon treasury yield curves which are needed for discounting pre-determined cash flow schedule to reach its current market price. This kind of spread is also used in credit default swaps (CDS) to measure credit spread.

A yield spread is the difference between yields on differing debt instruments of varying maturities, credit ratings, issuer, or risk level, calculated by deducting the yield of one instrument from the other. This difference is most often expressed in basis points (bps) or percentage points. Yield spreads are commonly quoted in terms of one yield versus that of U.S. Treasuries, where it is called the credit spread.
The option-adjusted spread (OAS) measures the difference in yield between a bond with an embedded option, such as an MBS, with the yield on Treasuries. It is more accurate than simply comparing a bond’s yield to maturity to a benchmark. By separately analyzing the security into a bond and the embedded option, analysts can determine whether the investment is worthwhile at a given price.
The zero-volatility spread (Z-spread) is the constant spread that makes the price of a security equal to the present value of its cash flows when added to the yield at each point on the spot rate Treasury curve where cash flow is received. It can tell the investor the bond's current value plus its cash flows at these points. The spread is used by analysts and investors to discover discrepancies in a bond's price.

An Asian American psychiatrist who made assertions about former President Donald Trump’s mental health has failed to get her gig back at Yale University.
In a federal lawsuit filed last year, Dr. Bandy Lee accused Yale of unlawful termination “due to her exercise of free speech about the dangers of Donald Trump’s presidency.” She sought reinstatement and damages from lost income, emotional distress and harm to reputation, among other claims.
Lee took up an unpaid, voluntary position at Yale for 17 years, a gig she described to be worth “thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars” in benefits, privileges and opportunities that allowed her to consult around the world. She gained public attention in 2017 after organizing an ethics conference that eventually led to the publication of a book titled “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President,” which became a New York Times bestseller.
Lee called Trump “delusional” and blamed him for spreading a “shared psychosis” among his followers, according to the Hartford Courant . Dr. John Krystal, who heads Yale’s psychiatry department, said Lee has taken the position that she has a “duty to warn” people that Trump presents a threat to public safety.
Yale apparently moved to terminate Lee after Alan Dershowitz, a department professor who had also been part of Trump’s legal team, reported her for “diagnosing” him as “psychotic” in public. That “diagnosis” came in comments made by Lee in response to a tweet he made, which she compared to Trump’s language and cited as a case of “shared psychosis.”
Ultimately, Yale said the reason it terminated Lee was due to her lack of a formal teaching role. However, the university had also questioned her judgment, professionalism and fitness to teach in the past due to her comments about Trump.
On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Sarah Merriam dismissed Lee’s lawsuit since there was no guarantee that Yale would have reappointed her, regardless of her qualifications. Lee’s claim of a free speech violation under Connecticut’s employment law also fell flat, since she was not officially employed in the first place.
“The question is not whether plaintiff [Lee] was hired as an independent contractor or an employee,” Merriam wrote, according to the New Haven Register . “Rather, the question is whether plaintiff was hired at all.”
Lee responded by saying that she was not surprised by the ruling. However, she plans to continue to fight “since my reason for launching the lawsuit in the first place was for the public good.”
For this reason, Lee is looking to appeal. She is placing her faith in discussions about the Goldwater rule, an American Psychiatric Association (APA) policy that discourages psychiatric professionals from commenting on the mental health of influential figures.
However, Lee has not been with the APA since 2007. Theoretically, this means that the rule does not apply to her and that Yale should not have used it against her.
“I was hoping that this would be an occasion for discussion about Goldwater, but that appears to be avoided at all costs,” Lee told Yale Daily News of the recent ruling. “I won’t give up.”

A federal judge has approved a bid by Former President Donald Trump to get a third party to review the documents seized from his Florida home.
(Reuters) -The blank-check acquisition firm that agreed to merge with former U.S. President Donald Trump's social media company failed on Tuesday to secure enough shareholder support for a one-year extension to complete the deal. At stake is a $1.3 billion cash infusion that Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which operates the Truth Social app, stands to receive from Digital World Acquisition Corp, the special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) that inked a deal in October to take TMTG public. Digital World had been hoping that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which is reviewing its disclosures on the deal, would have given its blessing by now.
The news was announced by Netflix Korea on Monday. This will be BIBI’s second acting role following her appearance in the horror film “Whispering Corridors 6: The Humming,” which was released last year. Based on the webtoon of the same name, “Sweet Home” is an apocalyptic horror series that was first released on Netflix in December 2020.
The president gets in the last word during this encounter.
When FBI investigators began to look over the documents they seized from Trump's home, they became "alarmed," a source told The Washington Post.
Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly denied being in possession of any classified documents relating to nuclear weapons.
A federal judge who approved a special master to review documents from Mar-a-Lago repeatedly expressed concerns about "fairness" for Donald Trump.
Fox News' Ingraham said The Washington Post was "spoon-fed information" for its report that Trump held on to the nuclear secrets of a foreign power.
"Trump judges do not believe in the rule of law," Elie Mystal said as the ex-president won a minor victory amid the probe into the classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.
Many Americans are eagerly awaiting news of a fourth stimulus check, especially as inflation continues to surge. The surprise stimulus money will be going out to some residents of Pennsylvania. This was first announced in August by Governor Tom Wolf.
Some highly classified documents found at former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-lago home were supposed to be kept under lock and key, according to The Washington Post.
The billionaire star of the 'Shark Tank' TV show is very angry at one of the liberal Massachusetts lawmaker's favorite proposals.
Rubio's description of the Mar-a-Lago raid ignores that the FBI is probing whether Trump broke federal laws in his handling of classified documents.
MSNBCMSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell said Tuesday that Judge Aileen Cannon’s order granting Donald Trump’s request regarding documents seized from Mar-a-Lago is an unofficial application for the next Supreme Court vacancy under a Republican president.Cannon on Monday agreed with the argument made by Trump’s lawyers that a special master should be appointed to sift through the documents, looking for those protected by attorney-client privilege—even though the Justice Department said late last month
Aileen Cannon "publicly applied" for the job by appointing a "special master" to review classified documents seized from Trump's home, the commentator said.
Trump may be the only person in America who got to appoint the federal judge overseeing the criminal investigation looking into him.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A document describing a foreign government's military defenses, including its nuclear capabilities, was found in the FBI's search last month of former President Donald Trump's Florida home, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday. An FBI spokesperson declined to comment on the report. Trump representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
IRYNA BALACHUK - WEDNESDAY, 7 SEPTEMBER 2022, 14:27 Oleksii Danilov, the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine (NSDC) is convinced that certain processes have already begun in Russia that will eventually lead to the collapse of the aggressor country.
Critics say the decision to stop reviewing documents seized from Mar-a-Lago until a special master is appointed is ‘unprecedented’ and ‘insane’

At least two dozen Ohioans are or have recently become ill from E. coli, and the latest outbreak is spreading to other states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The bacteria, which typically spreads through contaminated food, still hasn't been tied to a definitive source, the CDC said, but many of the affected people have reported eating sandwiches with romaine lettuce at Wendy's restaurants.
The 24 Ohio cases are in the following counties: Wood (10), Lorain (3), Cuyahoga (2), Lucas (4), Mahoning (2), Clermont (1), Franklin (1), and Summit (1). The five additional cases were in Wood and Lucas counties.
At least two more have been hospitalized bring the total to six, the health department said, and no deaths have been reported so far. The individuals in Ohio include those with ages from 8 to 82 years old.
Nationally, the E. coli outbreak has reached almost 100 cases. Michigan has more than double t
