Spotify Gets A Big Jump From Unexpected Audiences This Year
Gamers logged on early. The amount of music streamed from gaming consoles between 6am and 9am grew 47% over the previous year. Their preferred genre? Rap and trap music are their preferred genres. After performing a virtual concert on Fortnite the traffic on Spotify for Travis Scott, a musician who has agreements with McDonalds and PlayStation the game, soared. The streaming platform reported that streams increased by 207% globally between April 26 and April 30 compared to the same timeframe last year.
People actually sought out video game music. The most played video game soundtracks this year were from "Minecraft," the original "Doom" and "Death Stranding."
2020 was also a big year for virtual artists - people who are represented by fictional characters, such as the band Gorillaz. Japanese virtual singer Hatsune Miku saw streams go up 136% this year.
In 2018, Riot Games, which makes the hit game "League of Legends," created the virtual pop group called K/DA. Their name is a reference to the standard League of Legends lingo: the deaths, kills and assists players accumulate in every game and are recorded on the scoreboard. Riot brought back the group that was voiced by real-life singers with an album that was released. Letrastraducidas of the album topped Billboard charts. Spotify grew its streams by 109 percent.
Riot announced that its invention of K/DA has allowed it to gain a wider audience beyond League gamers and get more people interested in the game's content, it told CNN Business in a statement.

Spotify continues to explore partnerships with gaming companies. Spotify recently joined forces with League of Legends. It continues to work with Microsoft on the Xbox and PlayStation platforms.
Cook stated that Spotify has increased its gaming console streaming streams. It also added more curated playlists. "Thinking through how and what people would like to listen to while they are playing," Cook said.
