As shown in the episode " What Ever Happened to SpongeBob? ," it is revealed that Bikini Bottom has a proper population of about 538, though many episodes tend to portray a much larger scale. In Nautical Novice , Mrs. Puff stated that Bikini Bottom is home to millions of people. The city has historically gone by the names of "Bikini Gulch," "Dead Eye Gulch," and "Bikini Bottomshire."

It consists of many various different businesses, including restaurants, stores, and manufacturers. The city has a stable economy, a balanced education system, questionable healthcare, and labor laws, a structured government, and a firm law enforcement system. There are even stadiums, amusement parks, and other recreational facilities such as Glove World!

Bikini Bottom is also home to most of the main and supporting characters on the show.

Bikini Bottom is located in the Pacific Ocean at the bottom of the ocean, below its signature island, Bikini Atoll , a part of the Marshall Islands, found by Kevin Atalay and Lochem Pouw, according to Stephen Hillenburg [ citation needed ] . There are many instances of evidence of this in the show: After being scared off by "ghosts," Sandy Cheeks evacuates to Texas . [2] She was seen flying east over the Pacific Ocean. In the Employee of the Month computer game, a fish mentions that Bikini Bottom is located in the Pacific Ocean. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie , when SpongeBob sings the song
Bikini Bottom's geography consists of mountains, dense forests, lakes, lagoons, caves, grasslands, reefs, and rivers. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie , volcanoes, trenches, and deserts are shown in the surrounding region. Major geographic features have colorful names such as:

In every episode in which the skyline of Bikini Bottom is shown, features such as buildings, houses, and an anchor can be seen. In earlier episodes of the series, a red flower arch can be seen, which no longer appears in the skyline. In some episodes, a lighthouse appears in the skyline, most likely Mrs. Puff's Boating School . Other episodes feature the Krusty Krab's marquee. A large clam-shaped structure is seen in some episodes.

In the center of Bikini Bottom, the citizens work and live in large, gray buildings made of metal shaped like a drinking cup. There are some other forms of buildings, mostly aquatic-themed as seen above. Farther out from the town citizens need to use whatever is available and easy to live in, such as Patrick's rock , SpongeBob's hollowed-out pineapple , and the stone monument Squidward lives in.

Bikini Bottomites gathered around SpongeBob and the lifeguard.
Taking all of this information and mixing it in and also accounting for Squidward's negative personality there are probably 500,000 sea creatures in Bikini Bottom.

In the episode " The Good Krabby Name ," one can infer that the population is 600. The population may have grown since " What Ever Happened to SpongeBob? " with the sign saying it only has 578.

Map of Bikini Bottom (showed one time)
Bikini Bottom has its health department and several hospitals open for its residents:

Certain foods are parodied and given an aquatic theme, but others can be based on the real world. Like the real world, food ranges in many types such as potato chips, fast food, meat (beef jerky, burgers), and fancy foods. Kelpo , a cereal, is one of several popular brands in Bikini Bottom. It is shown that many products are advertised throughout the series. Krabby Patties , which are a popular food to ordinary people, rich people, and food critics alike, holds a positive reputation as edible food. The Krabby Patty passes on its taste to other Krusty Krab burgers, which adds on success as more creative products are made. Another fast-food restaurant, the Chum Bucket, sells inedible food such as Chum Sticks, Chum Burgers, and other chum products. The cuisine in Bikini Bottom is centered on fast food, but many others prefer fancy foods from Fancy! . Some unmentioned foods are listed:

Bikini Bottom is shown to be quite a clean city. Littering is highly prohibited and Squidward got a ticket for littering, and the areas around Bikini Bottom are pristine. The only problem is that with the high population and the number of automobiles Bikini Bottom can become very smoggy, as mentioned by Sandy in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Global warming has also affected Bikini Bottom, as seen in the educational short, " The Endless Summer ." In Industrial Park , there are many toxic chemicals and pollution.

In Bikini Bottom, animals are similar to those "animals" in the real world. Some are treated as pets, while others live in the wild. A majority of "animals" live in the wild. First, jellyfish is similar to bees and butterflies (since one catches them in nets ). Many different types of jellyfish live in Bikini Bottom. Pink is the most common, but they also come in green, blue, orange, yellow, and purple. In the episode " The Secret Box ," SpongeBob states that Patrick may have the world's only albino jellyfish. Jellyfish reside mainly in Jellyfish Fields , which has a population of four million Jellyfish. They make and live in hives, another similarity to real-world bees. In earlier episodes, jellyfish were plain pink, and later on more jellyfish began to appear with spots, but plain pink ones still exist. There is an annual Jellyfish migration that brings exotic species to Bikini Bottom. Jellyfish are similar to cows in that they can be "milked" for their fresh jellyfish jelly. The jelly, which can be taken from the hive or from the actual jellyfish, is the Bikini Bottom version of honey.

Second, scallops are similar to birds. They are usually found in groups at Goo Lagoon, particularly acting as seagulls. Scallops are usually orange or purple. There is also a colossal clam named Clamu in Oyster Stadium. It's currently a mother of one. Also, the medium-sized variants of clams are shown to be similar to wolves (like in the episodes " Texas ," when they were seen howling, and " The Thing ," when Squidward was attacked by a clam in the truck) and the larger variants are likely to be similar to non-sentient whales (like Clamu).

Third, sea slugs were seen in the video game SuperSponge . They are known to dislike everyone.

Fourth, seahorses , which are similar to horses, can be ridden and are very interested in food. SpongeBob kept a Seahorse in the episode "My Pretty Seahorse" and named it " Mystery ."

Fifth, the Alaskan Bull Worm is a large, omnivorous worm that attacked various parts of Bikini Bottom in its sleep in, " Sandy, SpongeBob, and the Worm ." It eventually went on to destroy the entire city. Sixth, sea urchins , which are small "bug-like" creatures whose bites cause severe itchiness (a possible similarity to fire ants or mosquitoes). Seventh, Nematodes, which are worm-like creatures that travel in groups and consume common objects by eating or drinking them (a possible similarity to termites). They once destroyed SpongeBob's house by sucking the pineapple juice out of it and one time they almost destroyed the Krusty Krab.

Ninth, there are sea bears, as seen in " The Camping Episode ." Tenth, snails.

Other "animals" are treated as pets. Two well-known "pets" are snails and worms. Snails are similar to cats (because they "meow") and are common as pets, but they are also known to lurk in alleys and forests. A well-known character Gary the snail is one of them. Worms are similar to dogs (because they bark) and these are also common as pets. At one point SpongeBob also owned a worm named Rex, An angry snail named Larry, and a jellyfish.

The only known inhabitants are Primitive Sponge , Primitive Star , Jellyfish , an Ammonite, some Trilobites, and a tapeworm. Talking, writing, fire, and other conditions were not discovered yet and the biggest invention was jellyfishing which was invented by Squidward himself. In The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water , Squidasaurus Rex 's wording may reveal that he lives there too: "I thought my friends were Primitive."

In this episode, it takes place in the year 10,000 B.C. we see the lives of SpongeGar , Patar , and Squog . Things were much more advanced, with a language system and basic housing. There were still only three known housings; SpongeGar's, Patar's, and Squog's. There were many jungles but also foghorn-like creatures, and Prehistoric Krabs , (Mr. Krabs a la caveman). This era can also be seen in the PC version of Lights, Camera, Pants! and " Atlantis SquarePantis ." Some of the things they discovered were the club, fire, and pets.

Advanced Prehistoric Era Squog SpongeGar, and Patar.
The city was small with only 38 citizens. One day, a creature named Man Ray came to terrorize the city. However, two young superheroes named "Mermaid Man" and "Barnacle Boy" came to stop him. They used a canister of Tartar Sauce, trapping him until SpongeBob and Patrick unfroze him in " Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III ." The two heroes were most likely beloved from that day forth, even getting their own TV show, when it was invented.

The Sponge monuments seen in the 51st century.
The Krusty Krab is Bikini Bottom's premier eatery. In most episodes, it is the most popular restaurant. The Krusty Krab comprises the kitchen, bathroom, dining area, and Mr. Krabs ' office. The employees are SpongeBob and Squidward. Former employees including Jim , Stanley SquarePants , and Patrick. Karen has worked once there, but soon left, getting fired in " Karen 2.0 ."

This is a restaurant run by Plankton. He only got one customer Nat, but he was paid by Karen to do it to cheer him up and stop his constant complaining on not having any customers. In one episode, Plankton says, "I only got one customer. There he is." He then points to a dead rat on one of the tables, next to a partly bitten Chum Burger. However, in some episodes, it becomes a short-lived success, such as Chum Fricasse and Chum Bucket Supreme.

The Shell Shack is a popular restaurant at an unknown location. It was mentioned only once in the series in the episode " Patty Hype ," when Tom and Fred met in the street and said: "There's a talking dog over at the Shell Shack!" Later he mentioned that the talking dog was singing.

The Diner is a diner. It is shaped like a big boat with a lit-up sign. It has been featured in episodes such as " Chocolate With Nuts " and " Missing Identity ." It also appears in the PC game, Employee of the Month .

The Kelpshake was once a popular place to buy delicious shakes until it was discovered that the drink could cause the abnormal growth of fuzzy kelp on one's body.

This is an ice cream bar that appeared in the episode " No Weenies Allowed ." Nerds are the standard customers and a robot is the only employee.

A "super" version of Weenie Hut Jr's seen in " No Weenies Allowed " and " Stuck in the Wringer ."

A restaurant that sells burgers and has an enormous chicken statue outside of it. It appeared in " The Masterpiece " and has not been seen since.

An ice cream parlor most prominently featured in " The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie " and in smaller appearances in recent times. Children, as well as SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star , are the main customers. It is the home of Goofy Goober , the parlor's mascot.

First Mayor of Bikini Bottom seen on the show
The Flag of Bikini Bottom, as seen in front of the courthouse, is a clamshell with an anchor on a white field.

In the episode, " Good Neighbors ," Bikini Bottom is mentioned to have a president, so it would be a republic, and a mayor is seen in several episodes. But in the episode, " Rule of Dumb ," Patrick Star became King Patrick and was a king for a short time. It was revealed later that the true king was Gary the Snail. It was then a monarchy again.

Second Mayor of Bikini Bottom seen on the show
In comparison to American cities, Bikini Bottom appears to lean more liberal. Salon.com has described the show as "Marxist."

SpongeBob became Mr. Krabs' new lawyer. The trial resulted in a victory for the defendant. in the episode "The Krusty Sponge," Mr. Krabs was arrested for poisoning his customers with the Spongy Patties. The jury reached a 'guilty' verdict, but after seeing the judge with a SpongeBob gavel, Mr. Krabs asked for permission to approach the bench. The scene cuts to the judge in the Krusty Sponge train with Squidward driving. Mr. Krabs tells Judge Horace A. Whopper that he can go around as many times as he wants.

A common Bikini Bottom Bus and Bus Stop
Bikini Bottom's main road is Conch Street. Conch Street runs from SpongeBob's, Patrick's, and Squidward's houses, past the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket, and stretches as far as downtown Bikini Bottom. It intersects with Coral Avenue, which is located in downtown Bikini Bottom. A series of highways run just on the outskirts of the city, and in the middle of downtown; a thruway is present. A road leads from Atlantis to Bikini Bottom, as seen in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie . Another road leads from Bikini Bottom to Rock Bottom , which goes past Glove World!. An interesting feature of this road is that for a distance it runs straight down a cliff. The only ways up from the bottom are by bus or with a balloon.

The name of the city bus service is Snailways. This bus service stops almost everywhere in Bikini Bottom and beyond (much like a Greyhound Bus). Like any city, Bikini Bottom has a huge traffic issue, with roads and highways clogged up even in the afternoon. It is very common for somebody coming back from work to be stuck in traffic. The bus drivers do not drive always great because they always stop when you do not want them to.

As shown in The Great Patty Caper , train service is also availble.

The well-being of an average Bikini Bottomite is unknown, but Bikini Bottom has a few hospitals and health centers, in which doctors make house calls.

Bikini Bottom has been destroyed at least eleven times. SpongeBob has started two disasters: the pie bomb and crossing the beams.

Bikini Bottom has many forms of media. Newspapers, magazines, radio, and television contribute to Bikini Bottom's widespread news and entertainment.

The Sports in Bikini Bottom are fairly different from a normal American range of sports. Here is the range.

Other sports include those that are played by people in the real world, such as weight lifting, swimming, volleyball, karate , and hot-dog-eating contests. Swimming is a very popular sport at Goo Lagoon. There are small circular pools elsewhere in the city. Volleyball is just like the real sport. In Bikini Bottom, volleyball is played at Goo Lagoon. Karate is a popular sport for SpongeBob and Sandy. Some Karate moves include the Double Overhand Squirrel Knot, the Squirrel, and the Tin Cans. Two karate-themed episodes are " Karate Choppers " and " Karate Island ." A hot dog eating contest is briefly shown during the episode " SpongeGuard on Duty ."

Bikini Bottom has its share of holidays. It has five main holidays, as in the real world like:

Bikini Bottom in "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!"
Five minor holidays are celebrated in Bikini Bottom, which humans know of like:

Other holidays are not known in the real world, but are known in Bikini Bottom are:

There are popular events that take place in Bikini Bottom. Most of these events take place at Goo Lagoon. Such events include:

Plankton inside his Mr. Krabs Robot sang this along with SpongeBob in the episode " Imitation Krabs ."

Other towns and cities in SpongeBob SquarePants include rock bottom , Bass Vegas , Ukulele Bottom, Apple World, Atlantis , Leisure Village, Tentacle acres , Palm Bay, and bottoms up /Waverly Hills, New Kelp City , plus Bikini Atoll on the surface. Shell City (Also on the surface) is six days away through a long and dangerous route beyond the County Line (the border of Bikini Bottom).

Here we see Bikini Bottom, teeming with life.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is a platform video game based on the Nickelodeon animated series SpongeBob SquarePants , developed by Heavy Iron Studios , AWE Games, and Vicarious Visions , and published by THQ . The game was released for the PlayStation 2 , Xbox , and GameCube consoles as well as separate versions for Microsoft Windows and Game Boy Advance . While the versions released for consoles were a 3D platformer , the Microsoft Windows version of the game is a mini-game compilation, and the Game Boy Advance received a 2D platformer version.

All versions of the game feature an original storyline, in which the player attempts to defend Bikini Bottom from an invasion of robots created by Plankton with a machine called the Duplicatotron 3000, playing as SpongeBob in all versions, as well as Patrick and Sandy in the console versions. The series' voice actors reprise their roles, with the exceptions of Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs and Ernest Borgnine as Mermaid Man , with both roles instead being voiced by Joe Whyte . The game was released on October 31, 2003, [2] in North America and in Europe on November 28, 2003.

Battle for Bikini Bottom received mixed or average reviews according to Metacritic . Edge included the Game Boy Advance version on its list for top handheld video games of the 21st century. It was a commercial success. The game has gained a cult following and a large speedrunning community presence.

A remake of the home console version, titled SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated , was released on June 23, 2020. It was developed by Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic for Nintendo Switch , PlayStation 4 , Xbox One , and Microsoft Windows. It includes a multiplayer mode and cut content from the original game.

The core gameplay involves collecting items and defeating the robots which have attacked various areas in Bikini Bottom, while crossing platforms and avoiding environmental hazards like spikes and flames. Some areas require different characters to beat, as each character has their own unique abilities. The player can control SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy. Switching characters in console versions require the player to find a Bus Stop, upon using which the current character will switch to another, and using it again will switch back to the previous character, giving the player an option of two characters in each level. The default character throughout the game is SpongeBob; Sandy and Patrick do not share any levels as playable characters.

The game is a 3D platformer collectathon, requiring players to collect three main types of items. 'Shiny Objects' are the game's currency and can be used to pay tolls within game areas or to buy golden spatulas from Mr. Krabs . [3] 'Golden Spatulas' are used to grant access to new areas, being hidden throughout the game and can also be earned by completing tasks set by Squidward Tentacles and several other characters from the cartoon. Patrick's 'Socks' are also spread throughout the game and he will reward SpongeBob with a Golden Spatula in exchange for 10 of his socks. SpongeBob can also blow bubbles to form different shapes as special attacks/moves which can be used to advance further in the game, and can learn two new bubble moves from Bubble Buddy as the game progresses. [4]

Props are also included in the game. Trampolines help the player bounce to further ledges or platforms, buttons activate certain things throughout the game, and pressure pads are like buttons; however, the effects of it are only active while the player stands on the pressure pad, or there is another object placed on top. Once whatever is holding down the pressure pad is removed, the effects of it are undone. There are also character specific abilities, such as Sandy being able to swing from Texas hooks, SpongeBob being able to dive downward on a bungee hook, and Patrick's ability to pick up and throw melons called "Throw Fruits" and ice cubes called "Freeze Fruits". Though some areas can be navigated by any character, several sections can only be completed with a specific character, due to each one having unique abilities. SpongeBob can create a bubble helmet for head-butting enemies. Patrick can throw objects at buttons, robots, and pressure pads, and can throw "Freeze Fruits" into bodies of Goo to freeze them. Finally, Sandy can glide over large gaps and destroy enemies and objects with her lasso.

The Windows version features a series of mini-games and greatly differs from the console versions. [5] In the game, SpongeBob's friends have been captured, and to free them, the player must play multiple games while collecting objects, including a game show -style trivia game where he must score 500 points to free the character from the cage. The player then takes control of the freed character in a game where the character locates more objects and battles the robots. Once all items are collected (money, magic shop items, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's gadgets, SpongeBob's dressing clothes, and various pieces of a machine), SpongeBob must return the items to their rightful owners.

Gameplay for the GBA version is much different as well, as it is a 2D platformer game. Rather than being non-linear, like the home console versions, the GBA version is level-based, although still visiting most of the locations from the home console versions. Combat is much more limited, done through blowing bubbles onto enemies to turn robots off or back on; robots cannot be permanently destroyed, as replacements will appear through a portal in their starting positions, so enemies are used to solve platforming challenges. SpongeBob can ride a seahorse named " Mystery " in certain levels. Like other GBA games of its era, it uses a password system rather than saves . [6]

The game revolves around the theme of robots invading Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob's hometown. Plankton, the evil genius owner of the Chum Bucket , has built a new machine called the Duplicatotron 3000 to produce an army of robots to use to steal the Krabby Patty Secret Formula. After creating them, he realizes that the switch on the Duplicatotron has accidentally been set to "Don't Obey" and the robots quickly kick him out of the Chum Bucket before taking it over and then wreaking havoc all over Bikini Bottom.

Meanwhile, SpongeBob and Patrick are playing with toy robots and horses. SpongeBob and Patrick are bored with the toys and wishes he could play with real robots. Patrick uses his "magic wishing shell", believing it will make their wish come true the following morning. SpongeBob wakes to find that his house has been trashed by real robots. He receives a fax from Mr. Krabs , stating that he would give SpongeBob a Golden Spatula for every certain amount of Shiny Objects he collects for him. Shiny Objects must be collected to open or activate various tolls throughout the game. Outside, SpongeBob finds a disappointed Plankton, who lies and claims that the robots appeared suddenly and kicked him out. Plankton convinces Spongebob to help him back into the Chum Bucket by embarking on a perilous quest to find golden spatulas and get rid of the robots, secretly intending to regain control of them once back inside.

Every area in the game has a unique set of missions to collect Golden Spatulas including a main overarching mission. SpongeBob travels to Jellyfish Fields, where he finds that Squidward has been stung by jellyfish and travels to defeat King Jellyfish in a battle and obtains some of his jelly for Squidward's stings. SpongeBob also helps Mrs. Puff by locating stolen steering wheels in Downtown Bikini Bottom, stolen paintings in Rock Bottom, and missing students in the Kelp Forest. King Neptune calls SpongeBob and Patrick to the Poseidome to defeat Robot Sandy. He then goes to the Mermalair, where he fights Prawn, one of Mermaid Man 's archenemies. He also helps Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy several other times throughout the game, as well as Larry the Lobster, his pet snail Gary and the Flying Dutchman, in other areas like Goo Lagoon, Sand Mountain, and the Dutchman's Graveyard, where Sandy beats the Dutchman in a fight. Later, SpongeBob and Sandy save Squidward from Robot Patrick.

SpongeBob then falls asleep, allowing him to enter his friends' dream worlds to search for more golden spatulas. After Plankton, SpongeBob and his friends finally gain access to the Chum Bucket, they discover the gigantic Robot SpongeBob and learn that Plankton was responsible for making the robots. Plankton sets the switch on the Duplicatotron to "Obey" (by placing an Obey sign over the don't obey setting), only to find out Robot Plankton has been controlling the robots instead. Robot Plankton tells SpongeBob he has interfered in his plans for the last time and tells him “SpongeBob, meet SpongeBot”. SpongeBob attempts to disable Robot SpongeBob's brain from the inside while fending off frequent attacks from Robot Plankton. Upon succeeding, SpongeBob hopes that Plankton learned his "lesson". The Duplicatotron produces several more Robot Planktons, which begin arguing among themselves. The game ends after SpongeBob says that their work is not done, as there are still many robots running amok in the city.

The game then cuts to The Spongeball Arena, where the player rolls around in ball form in a large arena, while the credits roll on the screen. If the player collects all 100 golden spatulas, the game ends with a special surprise cutscene of all the game's characters singing the theme song.

In the Windows game, SpongeBob and Patrick have a robot tea party with toy robots and SpongeBob wishes upon "the first falling clam" that robots "were people too". The next day, Bikini Bottom gets attacked by an army of robots. Patrick, Sandy, Gary, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs are captured by robots and locked inside cages. SpongeBob works his way through Bikini Bottom, the Flying Dutchman's Graveyard, the Kelp Forest, the Chum Bucket, and the Mermalair to locate his friends and various objects stolen by the robots. After all locations' games are played, a video is unlocked for the end of the game where SpongeBob and Patrick discover that Plankton was the one behind the robot invasion. Plankton admits that it was his fault and that the robots are not listening to him and the only way to control the robots is to set the switch to "obey" mode. Instead, Patrick fools around with the machine, accidentally pulling its obey switch off, which turns off the machine and deprograms the robots. After SpongeBob and Patrick leave, Plankton tries to tell them that he will be back with another plan.

The Game Boy Advance version is a 2D platform game with four chapters, each containing seven levels, all of which have their own unique puzzles. In the game, Mr. Krabs thinks the robot invasion is putting him out of business, so his assignment for SpongeBob is to fight the robots to get into the Chum Bucket to shut down Plankton's Duplicatron.

The home console versions of Battle for Bikini Bottom received mixed or average reviews from critics, according to Metacritic . [11] [12] [13] The game holds a 4.5 out of 5 from the Official PlayStation Magazine . [15] IGN rated the game a 7.3 out of 10, praising the sound, graphical style, and gameplay, saying, "While its generic collect, jump, and kill mechanics, the variety and general SpongeBob zaniness keep things fresh." [4] The game has won numerous awards, including favorite video game at the 2004 Kids' Choice Awards , [16] and entered the Player's Choice , Platinum Hits , and Greatest Hits for GameCube , Xbox , and PlayStation 2 respectively. [17]

The Game Boy Advance version sold an estimated 710,000 copies, [18] while the PlayStation 2 version sold an estimated 880,000. [19] In 2006, Edge magazine ranked the Game Boy Advance version at number 34 on its list of "The Century's Top 50 Handheld Games", while placing the PlayStation 2 version at number 67 on its list of "The Top 100 Games of the 21st Century", both lists arranged by the number of copies sold. [18] [19]

Years after the game's release, it has gained a cult following, positive reappraisal from contemporary critics, and a large speedrunning presence, [20] [21] with Heavy Iron Studios expressing interest in a remake or sequel, as well as requests from the game's fans for a remake. [22] This was granted nearly two decades after the game's original release, with the announcement of Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated on June 5, 2019, ahead of E3 2019 , albeit by a different developer from the original game. The remake was developed by Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic and features an all new multiplayer mode and content which was cut from the original game. [23] [24] The remake was released 1 year later on June 23, 2020. [25]
