All four male actors asked to appear naked in the film, to remove awkwardness or embarrassment about their own nudity, and to show solidarity for Camille Keaton who spends much of the film nude.
When Jennifer runs away in the woods and stops to throw the wooden tree trunk at the two men chasing her, a female crew member can be seen on the far left of the screen.
The BBFC passed a cut version of this film as an 18 certificate in November 2001 after removing 7 minutes from the 3 rape scenes. An alternate version - re-framed by the distributors and featuring the rape scenes though in a more obscure and off-screen way - was submitted in 2003, though the BBFC cut 41 seconds from the 2nd 'rock' rape because much of the errant thrusting was still visible. The uncut version was resubmitted for DVD in 2010 and, although some previous cuts were waived, 2 mins 54 secs of cuts were again made to the rape scenes.
Sola Perduta Abandonnato from "Manon Lescaut" by Giacomo Puccini
These comments are based on watching International Trading (UK) Ltd DVD certified in 2001; this version has major edits to the more disturbing scenes; the 'alternate versions' section gives a more complete description of the cuts. This film tells to story of Jennifer Hills; a New York writer of short stories who has decided to spend the summer in the Connecticut countryside writing her first novel. Here she attracts the attention of four young men; the attendant at the gas station, two of his unemployed friends and Matthew, the somewhat simple deliveryman from the local shop. Later they take a boat to her house and she is brutally raped. This happens three times; on the river bank, in the woods and finally back in her house. Not wanting to leave a witness they send Matthew back into her house to kill her but he can't do it. He just tells them he has. Two weeks later they are concerned as the murder has yet to be reported; soon after they learn that Matthew lied. In this time Jennifer has recovered and now she is ready to get her bloody revenge on the four men. Normally I'm not a fan of censorship but having read some other reviews I'm not sorry that the version I saw was cut; the rape scenes were disturbing enough even with substantial cuts. The story may be basic but it is effective. There may be little in the way of character development, especially for the men but I suspect that was deliberate... it makes everything seem more matter of fact. This feeling is increased by the almost total lack of music. While there isn't much to enjoy during the gruelling rape scenes they do make it easy to sympathise with Jennifer as she extracts her revenge. The revenge section may be more enjoyable but it still has its very disturbing moments; notably the sound of one of the men calling out for his mother after Jennifer deals with him in a way that will have most male viewers crossing their legs and wincing! The acting isn't great but it is okay for a low budget film of this type; Camille Keaton's performance as Jennifer is certainly the best. The story does contain plenty of plot holes that left me wondering if Matthew wasn't the only simpleton in the group! Overall this is a hard film to recommend but if you are a connoisseur of controversial films you will want to see it.

I Spit on Your Grave is a 2010 American rape and revenge horror film and a remake of the controversial 1978 cult film I Spit on Your Grave (originally titled Day of the Woman ). [4] It was directed by Steven R. Monroe and written by Stuart Morse, based on the original film's director/writer Meir Zarchi 's screenplay, [5] and stars Sarah Butler , Jeff Branson , Daniel Franzese , Rodney Eastman , Chad Lindberg , Tracey Walter , and Andrew Howard . [6]

It was distributed by CineTel, and produced by the company's president and CEO Paul Hertzberg. Lisa Hansen, Jeff Klein, Alan Ostroff, Gary Needle, and Meir Zarchi (director of the original) served as executive producers. Principal photography began on November 2, 2009, with location filming taking place in Louisiana.

I Spit on Your Grave had its premiere on Texas Frightmare Weekend on May 1, 2010, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 8, 2010, by Anchor Bay . The film received negative reviews from critics and grossed $572,809 on a $2 million budget.

Novelist Jennifer Hills travels from New York City to Louisiana to work on her next book in privacy. The gas station attendant , Johnny Stillman, gives her directions to her rented cabin when she gets lost. He embarrasses himself trying to flirt with her. When the cabin's plumbing becomes clogged, it is fixed by Matthew Duncan, a stuttering plumber with an intellectual disability . She rewards him with an abrupt kiss of gratitude. Matthew tells Johnny and his friends Andy Chirensky and Stanley Woods about his visit. Johnny, whose ego was bruised after the gas station incident, decides that Jennifer is snobbish and needs to be "taught a lesson".

That night, the four men sneak into the cabin and taunt and assault her, although Matthew refuses to participate. She escapes into the woods and bumps into Sheriff Storch and Earl, the owner of the cabin. Storch takes Jennifer back to the cabin, but when he finds her drugs and alcohol, he casts doubts on her story. Johnny, Matthew, Andy, and Stanley return; all five men gang-rape her, including an initially reluctant Matthew. Stanley records everything with his video camera . Afterward, just as Storch is about to shoot her, Jennifer falls into the river to escape.

Jennifer begins to stalk her rapists in order to learn details of their lives. Stanley tells Andy and Johnny that his camera has been stolen, along with the videotape of their assault. Storch intercepts a videotape sent to his wife and confronts the men to find out who sent it. Johnny and Andy suspect Matthew. When they go hunting, Storch kills Earl, saying that he is taking care of "loose ends".

Matthew returns to the cabin and meets Jennifer. He attempts to apologize to her, but she tells him that it is not enough and strangles him. She captures Stanley in a bear trap , ties him to a tree, smears fish guts on his face and then leaves his camera to record crows pecking out his eyes, which she pinned open with fish hooks . She then drowns Andy and burns his face off in a lye bathtub. Next, she ties Johnny to the rafters of an abandoned house and uses pliers to pull out his teeth and a pair of garden shears to emasculate him, leaving him to bleed to death. While torturing them, she repeats to all of the mens taunts they had used on her.

Jennifer visits Storch's wife, posing as their daughter Chastity's new teacher. She takes the daughter to the park and, when Storch tracks her there, she knocks him unconscious. When he wakes up, Jennifer stuffs his shotgun into his anus and reminds him that she was just as innocent as his own daughter. She attaches one end of a string to the trigger and the other end to the wrist of the unconscious Matthew, who is seated in front of Storch. When Matthew wakes up, he sees the bound sheriff and tries to move, triggering the shotgun, which fires a round through Storch's anus and mouth before hitting Matthew in the chest, killing both men. Sitting outside, Jennifer hears the gunshot and smiles.

Principal photography began on November 2, 2009, under Steven R. Monroe's direction. [16] The film was distributed by CineTel, and produced by the company's president and CEO Paul Hertzberg . [17] Lisa Hansen, Jeff Klein, Alan Ostroff, Gary Needle, and Meir Zarchi (director of the original) served as executive producers . [18] Location filming took place in Louisiana . [19] The film was written by Stuart Morse, based on Zarchi's screenplay.

CineTel Films handled the 2010 worldwide theatrical release. [20] The film was part of the Texas Frightmare Weekend on May 1, 2010 in the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Irving, Texas , [21] and part of the Film4 Frightfest on August 29, 2010. [22] The Canadian unrated version premiered [23] at the Fantasia Festival on July 20, 2010. [24] The complete cast and Meir Zarchi , director of the original , were present. [25] An unrated version opened theatrically in limited release on October 8, 2010, in the United States. Coincidentally, another unrated horror film, Hatchet II , opened a week beforehand. [2] [26]

The film's video release in the United States , Canada , Australia and the UK is handled by Anchor Bay Entertainment . [27] The DVD and Blu-ray were released in the United States on February 8, 2011. The DVD includes an audio commentary by director Steven R. Monroe and producer Lisa Hansen , as well as 11 deleted scenes , and teasers and trailers .

The DVD was banned in New Zealand just before its April release. [28]

Critical reaction to the film has been generally negative, with a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 61 reviews with the consensus simply labeling it as a "Well shot exploitation that has less purpose and utility than in 1978". [29] On Metacritic the film was assigned a rating of 27, based on 14 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews." [30]

Roger Ebert gave the film a zero star rating, as he did the original, and described it as the "despicable remake of the despicable 1978 film." He stated that it added "a phony sense of moral equivalency... If I rape you, I have committed a crime. If you kill me, you have committed another one. The ideal outcome would be two people unharmed in the first place." While he allowed that the movie was made "professionally," as opposed to the original version that was devoid of skill and artistry, he considered this largely in the service of the truly offensive material, the rape scenes. He summarized, "this [version] is more offensive, because it lingers lovingly and at greater length on realistic verbal, psychological and physical violence against the woman, and then reduces her 'revenge' to cartoonish horror-flick impossibilities." [31] [32]

Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "In addition to all the obvious things that are disgusting about this movie, I Spit on Your Grave is trying to get us to hate each other. Hate it instead. It makes more sense and the hatred is much more deserved." [33] Critic Andrew O'Hehir also denounced the notion that the film has a message, writing that it "just piles imaginary atrocities on top of real ones, and then halfheartedly claims that it means something. Well, it doesn't." [34]

Some support for the film in mainstream press came from The New York Times , whose reviewer wrote, "Female-empowerment fantasy or just plain prurience, Grave is extremely efficient grindhouse ." [35] V.A. Musetto, from the New York Post , also offered some support for the film, stating, "If you can handle it, see it." [36]

Like the original, the film did find cult support . Fangoria magazine wrote that I Spit on Your Grave "...is just as raw and upsetting in its onscreen brutality as the original. Perhaps more so, since the acting is significantly better this time around." [37]

A sequel, I Spit on Your Grave 2 , directed by Steven R. Monroe, was produced, and had a limited theatrical release on September 20, 2013. The film's plot concerns a young aspiring model named Katie (Jemma Dallender) who accepts an offer to have photos taken for her modeling portfolio. The events turn into a nightmare of torture, rape, and kidnapping, with a revenge plot similar to the first film.

In March 2015, Anchor Bay Entertainment announced the third installment in the series, titled I Spit on Your Grave III: Vengeance Is Mine . [38] Sarah Butler returned to her role as Jennifer Hills, and R.D. Braunstein directed the film. [39]

To start my review, I want to say that I rented this movie about a week ago (twice) and I still can't get it out my head. It moved me that much. What I meant about my title is, there's no guy with a mask (Jason, Michael, Leatherface) running around with knives, axe, or chainsaws. Also, there's not that unbelievable fictitious, severely burned character running around with blades for fingers. The story line of this movie, can really happen in real life, except for some very minor bits. Brutality, rape, and revenge happens all the time in our life. The producers just put it together remarkably on screen. Now I know, this a remake of the late seventies version and it copies someone else's work, but I am pretty sure I would still favor this 2010 version over the original, though I heard it was good. I am the typical type of guy who roots for the male character and enjoys watching the action and violence that the male actor can bring. But after Jennifer Hill's rape scene, when I am anticipating her revenge ,I was really anxious to see the havoc and carnage that she was going to come back with. I was on edge, because there was good portion of the movie after the rape that she doesn't appear. Then BAM!! There she was! Her retribution was original and unexpected. I was in awe. To me, I thought it was genius in the way writers came up with the ideas for her revenge and it was pleasant to see carried out by Jennifer/ Sarah. Again, not your typical slice and slash. Puts ideas for revenge to a whole new level. Even though it really wasn't that scary, I really felt on edged throughout the whole movie, up to the end when she is just sitting there. The actual rape scene was disturbing and I felt really sorry for Jennifer Hill. I kept thinking, what if she was someone I knew or cared about. If this movie had been real life and there was a young lady that was raped (especially the way she was), I would say hell yeah! Wreak Havoc! Put them through Hell, then send them to it. As for Sarah Butler, well when watching the Special Features (The Making of ISOYG), during the interview, one of the other characters mentioned that they couldn't find another actress to play the part of Jennifer Hill. I have to disagree and I say this hesitantly. I could think of several actress who could play this role quite well. BUT!!...BUT! !!And I want to emphasize this when I say it- I am SO glad that Sarah Butler played the main character. I have never seen her before in any movies. She was like a breath of fresh air as an actress. Her part in this movie and just her presence just knocked me on my a**. I guess this is what I mean when I mentioned that I couldn't get this movie out of my head. She's not the typical main stream hum-drum actress you see in the tabloids or media. I guess that's what makes her original. She was a complete surprise. Not only is she beautiful, she played her role well (Before, during, and after the rape scene). I am grateful that she didn't portray a dumb nitwit who became submissive to the antagonists. Instead, her character immensely symbolized the Phoenix in the Fire. I enjoyed her role as a smart focused athletic young lady. Well, besides the fact that in the movie she lit up a Mary J. But even then I thought that was hot. Well, I think after submitting this I might rent the movie again. Hell, I might as well just go purchase it. Hope my review helped. Didn't want to mention the actual plot, because I didn't want to ruin it for anybody. Enjoy!

I finally watched the re-make of I Spit on Your Grave... The Good: *Sarah Butler was the only decent actor in this film. She shines during the second half of the film, which she is out for revenge. My personal favorite scene is after the rape when she is walking away. I don't know what it was about the walk, but her walk away was almost as emotional as the rape scene for me. *The way she revenges the rapes would make Saw creators envious. Each individual man was murdered in the exact same way that they assaulted her... I would try to explain it more, but it would give away too many details about the juiciest part of the movie. *There was a lot of emotion in this movie. You could see on the faces of the men that were raping her some sympathy... It almost made me feel like they were thinking, "I really don't want to do this, but since they are why not." Maybe mixed emotions is what I should call it; one minute they have this slightly disturbed look on their faces, the next they are doing horrible, horrible things to her. The Bad: *I felt like a lot of the actors in this movie over-acted in attempt to get noticed at how great their acting skills were... and maybe get more jobs. I don't know. And I have bad news for almost all of them; their acting was sub-par at best. It's like a bad B-movie where the actors give it their all and it becomes forced. In a way this isn't really bad, considering I enjoy B-movies because I get a kick out of it. *Throughout the whole entire movie I found myself thinking the same thing every body thinks when a female in a horror movie does stupid things. "Why did she go out there alone?" Why did she keep going outside in the middle of the night to lock the shed? And of course, while running through the woods (without any pants on, which I didn't understan
