Vaginal contraceptive film (VCF) is a superthin film that is inserted into the vagina. It then dissolves and releases nonoxynol-9, a chemical that kills sperm ( spermicide ). You can buy VCF film without a prescription. The film must be used every time you have intercourse.

This article will explain how to use vaginal contraceptive film. It will also explain how effective it is compared to other forms of birth control, which may help you decide if it's right for you.

Nonoxynol-9, the spermicide in VCF, is also available in jellies, creams, vaginal suppositories, and foams. Some condoms are even coated with nonoxynol-9.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers VCF safe and effective for preventing pregnancy. 1 However, it is not as reliable as other birth control methods, such as the pill or an intrauterine device ( IUD ).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if you use a birth control method with nonoxynol-9 according to the instructions every time you have intercourse, it is 82% effective when used alone. This means 18 out of 100 of women will get pregnant in the first year of use. 2

If you forget to use it sometimes or don't follow the instructions properly, VCF is only 72% effective. In this case, 28 out of every 100 women will become pregnant during a year using this method alone. 2

VCF is most effective for preventing pregnancy when used with another backup form of birth control, such as male and female condoms . The only form of birth control effective for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is a condom.

According to the manufacturer of vaginal contraceptive film, a small number of users have reported minor irritation or burning of the vagina or penis. 3 VCF contains less nonoxynol-9 than other products containing this spermicide. This means VCF is less likely to cause irritation.

Vaginal contraceptive film has some pros and cons that you should be aware of.

Starts working quickly and lasts for three hours once it's inserted
Can be used with a condom to increase the effectiveness
Easy to use—not messy and doesn't stain
Small (2-inch square) and sold in individually sealed pouches
Widely available over the counter at drugstores and online
Does not protect against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other STIs
Frequent use of VCFs or other products containing nonoxynol-9 may increase vaginal irritation. This can increase the risk of STIs.
Spermicidal methods (when used alone) have a higher failure rate than many other birth control methods.

Vaginal contraceptive film, once inserted, absorbs vaginal secretions and melts into a thick gel that kills sperm. VCF has been around for over 20 years and has been rigorously tested for safety

You insert the film by hand. You or your partner can insert the VCF film, but it is important to place it far enough inside the vagina so that it is in contact with the cervix. You should be sure you or your partner can locate your cervix with a finger so it gets placed correctly.

The VCF dissolves almost immediately after insertion. There is nothing to remove.

VCF must be inserted at least 15 minutes before intercourse for it to completely dissolve and work effectively.

A new film must be used each time you have intercourse. Once inserted, it will provide protection from pregnancy for up to three hours. VCF has a shelf life of five years.

VCF is an over-the-counter form of birth control. It comes in small sheets of a thin film. You insert it into your vagina, where it dissolves and releases the spermicide nonoxynol-9.

Although VCF is not one of the most effective methods of birth control, it is far more effective than not using anything at all. It is easy to buy online or in a drugstore, and it is safe when used according to the instructions provided.

VCF film is just one of the many options for preventing pregnancy . Your healthcare provider as well as your partner can help you figure out which is the best one for you based on your wants and needs. Whatever type of birth control you choose, be sure you know how to use it properly for maximum effectiveness.

Vaginal contraceptive film (VCF) is a nonhormonal form of birth control . It consists of a thin, clear strip of material that you insert into your vagina. It then dissolves and releases nonoxynol-9 (a highly efficient spermicide). Placed high in the vagina, as close as possible to the cervix, the film dissolves quickly into a protective gel. 3
With optimal use—meaning that it is used correctly with every episode of vaginal sex —vaginal contraceptive film (VCF) is effective 82% of the time. This means that if VCF is used as the only form of birth control, 18 out of every 100 women will become pregnant within one year. 2
According to the manufacturer, vaginal contraceptive film will remain effective for up to three hours. If three hours have passed since the application of the film, you will need to use another one. You will also need to apply a new film after every male ejaculation . 3
To correctly apply vaginal contraceptive film: 4
Because vaginal contraceptive film contains less nonxoynol-9 than foams, gels, and other spermicidal products, it is less likely to cause side effects. Mild irritation or burning sensations of the vagina or penis have been reported. 3
No. In fact, the frequent use of nonoxynol-9 can irritate the delicate tissues of the vagina and, by doing so, increase the risk of HIV . 5 While vaginal contraceptive film can help prevent pregnancy, the best way to avoid STIs is to use a condom .

How Do You Use VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Film?
Directions for Use

VCF is 94% effective when used properly. Proper use is as follows: Remove the pre-folded film from the sealed pouch. Place it on the tip of your clean, dry second or third finger. Insert the film quickly as high as you can comfortably go. Allow 15 minutes to dissolve. It will be effective for up to 3 hours, or for each act of intercourse. Use a new film for each act of intercourse, again, waiting 15 minutes to dissolve.
No, a new applicator/dose must be used with each act of intercourse.
Yes VCF is non-hormonal and safe for breastfeeding mothers.
If this occurs, we recommend you discontinue use and drink plenty of fluids. Symptoms should subside within 24 to 48 hours. However, if symptoms persist we recommend you see your physician to determine the exact cause of the irritation.
Nonoxynol-9 is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic and the other ingredients are commonly found in many personal care products. No reports or studies have been done to date. Nonoxynol-9 has been the subject of many studies and tests, and is a FDA approved spermicide. As per poison Control, N-9 contains anti-ionic detergents and soaps. If you experience discomfort, increase fluids. It is also possible to experience some numbness or tingling on the tongue or lips if accidentally ingested, but this is not harmful and these symptoms will subside rather quickly. Film – Ingredients are non-toxic and not carcinogenic. Once VCF is in place at the cervix, it does not run. Glycerin is found in many prepared foods.
No VCF does not protect against HIV or STDs. It is strongly suggested that you contact your health professional for the best method of STD prevention and HIV protection. Studies have raised concerns that products containing the spermicide nonoxynol-9 can irritate the vagina and rectum, which may increase the risk of getting HIV/AIDS from an infected partner. Therefore, we recommend using a latex condom without nonoxynol-9 if you or your partner have HIV/AIDS, multiple sex partners or HIV risk factors.
You can use two methods of birth control at the same time. Using both will not give you 100% protection, but could give added protection if one method fails. Remember that since no method is 100% effective, there is no 100% guarantee, using more than one form of birth control will not necessarily give you 100% protection against pregnancy as no one method by itself is 100% effective. Do not use 2 or more films at a time or use 2 nonoxynol-9 products at a time. VCF film is 94% effective in preventing pregnancy when inserted properly. The use of a condom would give you protection against sexually transmitted diseases. The use of other forms of birth control would give you added protection against pregnancy.

Insert the film quickly and as high as you can comfortably go. Allow 15 minutes to dissolve. It will be effective for up to 3 hours, or for each act of intercourse. If you follow these instructions, you will have inserted the film properly.
First, make sure your fingers are dry. Use a quick motion to insert the film, and you may fold the film an additional time, if you prefer to make the film smaller.
Yes, we realize some consumers may have the concern that the film is not being placed in the exact location upon insertion. However, rest assured that if you are properly following the directions included with the product, it is designed to be effective. Once the film is inserted, it begins to dissolve and form a protective gel at the entrance to the cervix. However, a perfect seal at this entrance is not of the utmost importance. The film is designed to dissolve and release enough spermicide so that its overall presence in the vaginal area will be sufficiently effective in killing any sperm introduced as a result of one act of intercourse. So in essence the film is not designed merely to form a barrier, but also to kill sperm.
Yes, the ingredients in VCF are non-toxic.
A lubricant may be used with the contraceptive film, but we strongly recommend that you insert the film first and wait the 15-minutes for it to dissolve; then utilize a lubricant.
We do not advise to do this. Also, do not use 2 nonoxynol-9 based products at the same time.
We do not recommend inserting the film and then entering a pool or hot tub as this may cause the spermicide to be washed out of the body prematurely and consequently lessen or even totally eliminate its effectiveness.

Film – 28% Nonoxynol-9, this translates to roughly 72 milligrams per film.
Film – Once inserted, the film will be effective for up to 3 hours and for one act of intercourse. If more than one act occurs within the 3-hour period after insertion of the first film, a new film should be inserted prior to the second act (once again to ensure that enough spermicide is present to effectively kill off the additional amount of sperm). Film – Active: Nonoxynol-9, with Inactive: Polyvinyl alcohol, water, glycerin (vegetable/kosher) Film – Can be found on IFC and individual pouch

Please refer to the directional insert that was packaged inside the product box. There are a very small number of people who are sensitive to the spermicide nonoxynol-9, which is the active ingredient in VCF film and foam. You should consult your physician if persistent irritation occurs to determine the cause of the irritation.
Although VCF cannot directly cause a yeast infection, its presence can affect the delicate microbiological balance of the vagina. Drink plenty of fluids and symptoms should disappear within 24 – 48 hours. If symptoms persist, please consult your physician to determine the exact cause of the irritation.

The film dissolves to form a protective gel at the entrance to the cervix. It also contains a powerful spermicide. The presence of this spermicide in the uterine cavity will create an environment designed to kill sperm upon contact.
Since you didn’t wait 15 minutes it is difficult to say whether or not it dissolved properly. Chances are it dissolved somewhat and released some nonoxynol-9 to kill off some sperm, if not all. In the future remember that once you insert the film and wait 15 minutes for it to dissolve it can be 94% effective in the prevention of pregnancy for up to 3 hours. So, you don’t need to wait until just before you are ready to have intercourse to insert the film. You do need to give it 15 minutes to dissolve. Also, remember that you need to insert a new film for each act of intercourse. Taking into consideration a number of variables (such as individual body temperatures and moisture levels) we have determined that for the majority of people 15 minutes is enough time for the VCF film to sufficiently dissolve after it has been inserted. Some people may need the full 15 minutes for it to dissolve, others may only require a few minutes. But the film must dissolve in order to release the spermicide nonoxynol-9, which is the active ingredient that kills sperm

VCF is Hormone Free Safe and Effective Easy to Use
VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Film is a soft square of soluble film that’s designed to dissolve with your body’s natural moisture.
Once VCF dissolves, it creates a barrier of gel that coats the cervix. VCF contains a highly effective spermicide that kills sperm on contact for up to 3 hours.
Insertion is easy, and after it dissolves, it becomes unnoticeable by either partner, allowing for comfortable lovemaking.
When inserted into the vagina, the contraceptive film forms a barrier against the cervix that contains spermicide. As a result, it helps prevent pregnancy by killing sperm on contact, when the directions are followed, and the Film is used correctly.
When used correctly and by itself, VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Film is up to 94% effective. If you use the film with another contraceptive method at the same time, such as a condom, it is up to 99% effective. We do not recommend that you use two films at the same time, or use another contraceptive that contains spermicide.
