Blumhouse Television isn’t typically in the business of straightforward documentaries, but when you watch Our Father —which began streaming on Netflix today—you’ll see right away the horror movie production company chose this story. Because it is undeniably a nightmare.
Yes . Our Father tells the jaw-dropping true story of Don Cline, a fertility doctor in Indiana who inseminated over 90 patients with his own sperm, without their consent. Parents who desperately wanted children but couldn’t conceive trusted Cline, who told his patients he used sperm donated by medical students.
In some cases, fathers provided their own sperm sample and were told that their child, while conceived with the help of a fertility clinic, was biologically their own. In other cases, parents picked a donor under the assumption it was coming from a sperm bank—where men are screened for a history of serious medical issues. In all cases, Cline assured mothers individual donors were used no more than three times, to avoid a network of half-siblings in the Indianapolis area.
All of Cline’s patients were lied to. Instead, shortly before the insemination procedure, Cline was somewhere in the building, masturbating into a sample cup. Then he injected his sperm into his patients, and they unknowingly birthed his child. He did this for about a decade, after opening his clinic in 1979 until sperm banks became more commonplace in the late ’80s. He probably assumed no one would ever find out. But then his many offspring grew up and started taking DNA tests.
Over the past decade, mail-out DNA tests like 23andMe and Ancestry-dot-com have become increasingly popular, and as more and more people send in their swabs, the more data there is available for who is related to who. Jacoba Ballard had known she was a donor baby since a young age, and she desperately wanted information about her biological family. When her mother’s doctor, Dr. Cline, told her there was no way to get those records, she figured the DNA test would give her more answers. She thought, knowing that Cline had told her mother he didn’t use donors more than three times, she might discover one or two half-siblings. In fact, her results told her she had seven half-siblings.
But there was more. Once connected, the half-siblings realized they were all related to a woman with the last name Cline—Dr. Cline’s cousin. Suspicions were being formed, but they didn’t have proof. Ballard began reaching out to Cline’s family, and, finally, with the help of Cline’s son, a few of the siblings got a meeting with the now-retired doctor. He admitted to using his own sperm in the insemination process but claimed he only did it to help the women he felt were desperate to have children. In the meantime, some of the siblings were hitting the media circuit, and as the story spread, more and more people in the Indianapolis area were learning they were a Cline baby. Still, Cline said there would not be more than 15 siblings born from his sperm.
By the time this story was told in a 2019 Atlantic article , at least 50 half-siblings had been identified. By the time the 2022 film Our Father wrapped production, that number sky-rocketed to 94. In the film, Ballard says dreads the moment a new DNA match appears online, knowing full well she is about to shatter yet another person’s life. But she feels they deserve the truth. Many of the siblings inherited Cline’s auto-immune diseases, and their lives have been riddled with medical issues. And yet, despite the fact that what Cline did was undeniably a sexual violation, a somewhat crass and unsympathetic lawyer explains in the documentary that it was not legally—according to Indiana state law—rape.
In the end, Cline was charged only with obstruction of justice, for lying to the attorney general’s office about using his sperm on patients. He lost his medical license (after he had already retired), paid a measly $500 fine, and served a single year of probation. And that was it.
The theories on why he did it are equal parts compelling and horrifying. Was Cline a member of the cult-like Quiverfull Christian movement , which encourages members to have as many children as humanly possible? Was he a racist, trying to create a blue-eyed, blond-haired Ayran super-race? Does he simply have an out-of-control God complex? The siblings may never get the answers, nor the justice, that they deserve. All they can do is tell their story, and hope that it never happens again.
